Okay, all this 4e talk is started to weigh me down again, so I need a little levity to make me feel good again about FR and D&D.

What funny or strange or out-right bizzare monsters have you used in your games?

It could be completely home-made, or a variant of an existing creature.

One of my all-time favorites was the Cerebral Hemoroid. :D
I based it on the Cerebral Parasite in the 1e Monster Manual, but it attached itself to a victim's butt, slowly draining IQ points until the creature was in control of its host.

After awhile, you could say the character's brains were literally in his a_s. :P

Mosquitos carrying malaria. Maztica and Chult was never the same to the adventurers after that.

-That's one thing that, off the top of my head, Maztica did not rip from history books- the spread of diseases between the two cultures.

Froudesque Goblins to scare the living daylights out of my players with the sheer chaos of the encounter... don't think they've quite recovered from that one after all these years. :D

As in Brian Froud's version of Goblins... creatures of pure chaos and semi-malignant sillyness. Good stuff really.

Which annoys me. Talona totally made a mess of that! She had the PERFECT opportunity for some good ol' genocide!

I am preparing a sabotender/cactuar as a joke monster for a future session.
It's token '1000 needles' attack (1000 damage) will become 100 needles though. (For balance reasons obviously) :)

They ran before I could unleash the really heinous stuff on them... :(

Also, animated cutlery swarms in Haunted Mansions have caused many a PC to decide that there are worse things than level drains.

-I'm going to have to borrow that. It's too bad, because my PCs just left a magical mansion one or three sessions ago.

You're welcome=)

For haunted mansions, I love "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Very little beats that! Heroes of Horror is actually great for scaring players! Also got some awesome tracks that help it along!

-I'm going to have to eventually borrow that, and an idea that msa uses about Deepspawn.

-In a just for fun campaign that happened after we PCs finished the module, the DM had us fight the Tarrasque. We were all 18 and 19th Level characters, and we got our asses kicked. My character won initiative before everybody, and I cast a Sunburst spell on it. I forgot it has that mirror hide, however, and the spell was reflected, blinding half of the party before combat actually even began. :embarrass

Good stuff, guys. :dancin:

When I was running GH, I was very much into the Xanth novels at the time, and I was a big fan of puns. That worked well in GH, but FR was a little too 'serious' for that sort of thing.

Another monster I came up with back then was an adorable little critter called a 'Rukus'. It was basically a cross between a tribble and a Shrieker - I was going for something cute-as-a-button, with the Shrieker's abilities, with the extra coolness of being able to be used as a pet or familiar. They also hang-out in the same places as the Shrieker, in caves and caverns, and live off of the fungi and insects that can be found there. Anyhow, the great thing about them is that if you train one, it makes an excellent gaurd! You just place it where you want, and the thing will go off like an alarm if anyone walks near (once again, just like the Shrieker). The problem is, they take a LONG time to train - a full year in fact! Also, the trainer (PC) must remain with the creature 24/7 for the entire year, which means bringing it on adventures. Thats the BIG downside of owning one - while training it, the thing will usually behave, but at the most in-opportune times, it will belt out with an ear-piercing screech, attracting EVERY wandering monster in a five mile radius.

So you see, its true what they say - "While exploring dungeons, one should never raise a Rukus" ;)

Also, animated cutlery swarms in Haunted Mansions have caused many a PC to decide that there are worse things than level drains. So the place was haunted by the 'Blue Rajah' of Mystery Men fame? :D

Hmmm... haven't thought about that movie in a while. Gives me an idea for a NPC looking at that picture...
