Clarification of the Shadow Jump Spell/Ability? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-18-07, 08:46 PM When an individual uses the Shadow Jump Spell/Ability, do they actually travel through the shadow plane to get from one shadow to another? According to the spell/ability description (posted below), it is similar to a dimension door spell...

Shadow Jump (Su)
The ability to travel between shadows as if by means of a dimension door spell. The limitation is that the magical transport must begin and end in an area with at least some shadow. Onecan jump up to a total of 20 feet each day in this way; this may be a single jump of 20 feet or two jumps of 10 feet each. Every two levels higher than 4th, the distance which can jump each day doubles (40 feet at 6th, 80 feet at 8th, and 160 feet at 10th). This amount can be split among many jumps, but each one, no matter how small, counts as a 10-foot increment.

04-18-07, 10:47 PM Well, from the desciption you posted, it doesn't say explicitly one way or another. I could see either as justified. Dimension door uses the Astral Plane, and the ability says it works like said spell. However, because the ability is clearly reliant on the presence of shadows, I think it would be perfectly reasonable to make it use the Plane of Shadow, instead. Is it that important? And if it is, just pick one.

04-27-07, 03:34 PM If im not mistaken they travel through the shadow fringe(sp) its like the outerboundry keeping the shadow plane and prime from melding together into one big grey area

That's what has been described in novels.

Also, the Shadow Walk spell (which Shadow Jump seems to be derived from) uses the Shadow Plane. An undenying advantage, as they are from the Illusion (Shadow) school of magic, as opposed to Conjuration (Teleportation) which some Abjuration spells block.
