| hawkinsthedm07-04-07, 09:26 PM | Is there any rules for creating clockwork monsters (i.e. non-magical constructs) in 3.5e? I think it would be a cool for a setting in Lantan. |
| Alac Luin07-04-07, 09:46 PM | The PrC known as "Techsmith" from F&P does have something on this. It is a Lantan / Gond worshiper based in Flavor. The rules are kind of like building a "robot familiar" (it gets better as you go up in level). Although similar, I don't think this is exactly what you are looking for, but it is something. |
| hawkinsthedm07-04-07, 09:58 PM | Thanks Alac! Anyone else got any material? |
| Karsus the Mad07-06-07, 11:15 AM | There's a fanbased template for golems, making them clockwork. It's not a non-magical robot thing, but is nice. It's what I use for my wizard/techsmith/Lantanese artificer NPC's personal constructs. Clockwork Golems http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10832086&postcount=232 Clockwork Golem Template Clockwork golems are regular golems, that instead of being made of a solid, single material, their bodies are augmented with clockwork mechanisms encased within them. This gives them more speed and mobility, but also makes them much more fragile. Creating a Clockwork Golem“Clockwork” is an inherited template that can be added to any corporeal golem (referred to hereafter as the base golem). A clockwork golem uses all the base golems statistics and abilities except as noted here. Size and Type: Size and type remain unchanged. Speed: All modes of movement are increased by 15ft. Armor Class: If the base golem had a natural armor bonus, it takes a -3 penalty. Special Qualities: A clockwork golem keeps all the special qualities of the base golem and gains the following: Delicate Mechanisms (Ex): If a clockwork golem loses more than ľ (three quarters) of its hit points, the clockwork mechanisms that help move it become vulnerable. The golem is then susceptible to critical hits, it loses 5ft of speed off of all modes of movement, and takes a cumulative -1 penalty to attack and damage rolls (to a maximum of -5) per successful critical hit against it in this state. When the golem regains the lost hit points, the 5ft of speed, vulnerability to critical hits, and penalties to attack and damage rolls are all lost. If the base golem had damage reduction, reduce it by 1. Abilities: Same as base golem, but -2 Str and +4 Dex. Challenge Rating: +1 Construction A clockwork golem can only be made when the base golem’s body is being assembled. In addition to the normal materials, the creator must also have 100 pounds of bronze for large golems, 50 pounds for medium golems, or 200 pounds for huge golems to make into the mechanical parts. 100 pounds of bronze costs 50gp (x2 for huge golems, ˝ for medium golems). Before the normal Craft checks are made to construct the base golem’s body, the one creating the golems body must succeed on a DC 20 Knowledge (Architecture and Engineering) check, and a DC 20 Craft (any metalworking) check. A spell caster creating a clockwork golem must also pay an additional 1166gp and 86xp in rituals that make the dweomers of the elemental spirit flow smoothly around the mechanical parts. Also, if you can get your hands on an old book called D20 Magic, there's an entire chapter called Technomancy, which also details various "gear work" constructs and customizations for them. |
| hawkinsthedm07-06-07, 11:57 AM | That's really cool. I do not see how a reduction to so many things, vulnerability to critical hits (at 1/4 hp), and a -2 Str/+4 Dex gives it a +1 to CR though. |

| FrostWolf07-22-07, 01:23 PM | Complete Arcane has a PrC called the Effigy Master that might be of intrest to you. |
| cato07-23-07, 02:08 PM | Whatever you do don't use the clockwork horrors from mm2, they are kinda broken :p If you do at least lower their CR ^^ |
