Dark Moon monks multiclassing [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-30-07, 07:29 PM Hello, and sorry if this has already been addressed.

The monastic orders entry in FR:Campaign setting reads that Dark Moon monks can multiclass freely as sorcerers (actually, they seem to have to if they want to survive the training) as long as they keep at most 2 levels of difference between the two classes. But it seems that in later works (LoD, CoR) there's no mention to any restriction, and we even get a Dark Moon monk npc in CoR which is 15mnk/4sor or something like that.

Do i have to assume the "2 levels in between" rule just dropped?

03-31-07, 12:16 AM -I guess that character took the EXP penalty (or whatever happens when you are not supposed to multiclass- I don't use those rules).

03-31-07, 08:50 AM The official word would be that any non-authorized multiclassing for monks or paladins "locks" their monk or paladin level, although it allows to retain present monk or paladin abilities. In the case of that NPC, he wouldn't have been able to go past level 6 as a monk, although he could have advanced as a sorcerer. That is, if the 3.0 FR rule still applies.

03-31-07, 12:51 PM I don't really see how this is confusing.

The rule is that members of monk orders can return to monk after multiclassing into specific classes based on their monk order. For the Dark Moon, it is sorcerer, with the additional restriction that the classes cannot be more than two levels apart.

So this NPC went Monk 1/ Sorcerer 1/ Monk 2/ Sorcerer 2/ Monk 3/ Sorcerer 3/ Monk 4/ Sorcerer 4/Monk 5-15.

The alternating first 8 levels are allowed from the order. After the level difference surpasses 2, he can take another level of sorcerer but wouldn't be able to return to monk. But he could just not take another level of anything else, and keep taking monk levels.

03-31-07, 07:57 PM Not exactly, or at least that's not as i understood it the first time: if you don't multiclass in the class / level allowed by your order, you can't advance anymore with monk levels: thus, that npc couldn't have gone past monk 6, since doing so would have required more sorcerer levels.

But that wasn't the point: my question was simply if anyone, by any means, knows of an "official" stance on Dark Moon monk allowed multiclassing for 3.5, since i don't seem to be able to find any. There's the possibility of not being one, though, since the only product mentioning that order for 3.5 (CoR) just says you need to manifest some sorcerous powers to survive the training, nothing more. That would mean freely multiclass as a sorcerer, no difference restriction.

He said Monks can multiclass as they choose in Faerun and do not follow the "DnD" restriction, just FYI.
