Death Knight [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-20-07, 11:18 AM Is there such a class/prestige class as Death Knight? If so, where is it located. If not, any ideas on creating one? Something dealing with the undead (creating/summoning), I think would be nice.

05-20-07, 12:43 PM There's something very similar in Serpent Kingdoms too-one of the firenewt servants of Kossuth was reanimated, and stated by the book to be something like a death knight. I don't recall whether the abilities matched the template exactly, though.

05-21-07, 02:12 AM Basicaly, it's a very powerfull undead with a dark side.... A dark knight is the eternal, cursed fate of a knight/paladin/etc who have fallen from grace and goodness - and by fallen, we speak of a sin beyond lowness.

The archetypal death knight, Lord Soth, *spoilers*

was wed but lusted after a virginal elven priestress.... he ended up killing his rightfull wife, and falling slowly and slowly lower in an infernal spiral....

05-23-07, 01:24 PM I would have to agree with Steelwind, anyone that has ever followed D&D paperback novels should have heard of Lord Soth. He is and alwyas will be the man ( assuming death Knights are in the catagory of " the " man )

Lord Soth was a Knight of the Rose, one of the highest of his order. One day while riding, he passed a caravan of elven clerics, and fell in love with a young initiate. Soth murdered his present wife and married the elf maiden, who learned of his treachery. She prayed to Paladine on Soth's behalf, and learned of the Cataclysm. She also learned that Soth could prevent it from happening if he rode to Istar, but he would be killed in the act. Soth rode to Istar to redeem himself, but came again on the elven clerics, who tricked him into believing that his new wife -- now pregnant -- was cheating on him. In a jealous rage, he rode home to kill her, arriving at the moment that the Fiery Mountain struck Krynn, killing his wife and child -- but not before she placed a curse on him. Lord Soth then began roaming Krynn as a Death Knight; his men at arms were now a legion of undead warriors, and the elven clerics became banshees that sung his lament to him every night. Soth served the Blue Lady, Kitiara, and strove to entrap her soul as his wife for eternity.

["War of Souls" trilogy spoiler]:- Mina petitioned him for aid during the War of Souls, however he refused, had his cursed removed and was destroyed for his audacity.

05-24-07, 02:54 PM I've only read Chronicles and Legends trilogies, they didn't give me the same feeling that I got when reading FR novels. And it's too centered around the same group of adventurers. Dragonlance PnP campaigns are the hardest to do because the heroes of the lance have already done it before. Too monolithic BBEG mean you don't have too much options to create adventures and the world is too small, even smaller than Eberron if I'm not mistaken.

I think thats something they were trying to alleviate when they created the age of mortals (the new age), and also I think they made a 3 part super adventure focused on the PC's kickin BBEG ass.

Definitly true. I feel that the Dragon Lance story line is already said and done. They've come out with a lot more books since the chronicles and legends series but it just seems too over drawn. Anyway, I love them both but as GD said, for very different reasons.

I think you are thinking of Shurrupak, Chosen of Gilgleam?

My intial experiences with the FR setting were essentially the same -- it was love at first sight.

He also knows a wealth of Planescape lore. ;)I'll admit to be "rusty" in a few areas though... 'tis been quite a while since I've read any of my PS books.

Dragonlance was (and is) very cool for what it is. It's just not the same feel as Faerun. I like both about equally, for different reasons. Just like I like Planescape for different reasons.Indeed.

It's also for these reasons that I find I still love Ravenloft.
