I'm just starting the game, and I was looking at the Dragon Shaman class. It looks pretty good to me, and I'm wondering if I can use the Purple Dragon as my Totem Dragon

-There actually aren't Purple Dragons running around. The Purple Dragon- as in the Purple Dragon of Cormyr fame- was actually a Black that was so ancient it's scales became a purple hue.

I believe I read somewhere that Purple Dragons use different Breath attacks though. That's what I'm getting at, I suppose. I've read that Purple dragons/Beyond Ancient Black Dragons use Searing Energy, Flashes of Light, and Energy Blades instead of Lines of Acid.

So I take it I can't have a Purple Dragon as my totem, but I can have Black Dragons?

-That I don't know- I don't have that book. But, if you can have Metallic Dragons, then why not Chromatic Dragons? I don't see any reason you wouldn't be able to, so long as the character reflects what Black Dragons espouse and all.

What about having the Black Dragon as my Totem, but having the Breath weapons of a Purple Dragon?

There is a Purple Dragon - Gaumahavi of Ra-Khati, found in the Hordelands sourcebooks and adventures. She's apparently a unique being though, originally a leopard, but as she's statted as a 'Greater Purple Dragon', there may be other, genuine Purple Dragons around.

She has a purple dust breath weapon. She's Neutral.

This is a 2nd Edition critter however, you won't find it in 3.x stats. I suspect that some kind of Gem Dragon would be closest.

By the RAW, there are no Purple Dragons. If you like the "Purple Dragon" of Cormyr, then choose the Black totem. If you just like the colour, then go with a, unusual Red, Black or Blue. If you want to mix-and-match totem abilities, then that's a house-rule you should run by your DM.

There's a purple dragon in Dragon Compendium vol.I, along with the orange and yellow dragons. I think they are supposed to be an update from 2nd Edition, and it is not FR-specific. These purple dragons are lawful evil.
