| Grandmaster_Kane07-05-07, 05:43 PM | Are there any that suit him better? I was thinking about dervish or If we decide to bump him a couple of level even my custom Blade Paragon class ---> http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12074500&postcount=1 Besides the flavour issues is are there any other class for him? also on a side note, do you like my class? |
| Lord Karsus07-05-07, 08:56 PM | -We've been through this already- Drizzt doesn't exhibit any of the qualities that your PrC provides, he is not at a high eneough level to even take it, and your PrC was horribly overpowered. |

Did you even Read the new one? And I know he isnt strong enough which is why I said That i would bump him up. |
| Lord Karsus07-05-07, 10:30 PM | Did you even Read the new one? -Yes, and it is still horribly overpowered. |
| Zanan07-06-07, 08:55 AM | Now ... whatever he's been described before, from reading what he did and does, IMHO the lad is a straight Fighter / Scout, possibly having a few levels of Tempest (CAdv) pre-leaving Menzo. So going by the 16 levels in the FRCS, which is fair enough for the orc warrior annihilator, that could be a Ftr 6 / Tempest 5 / Scout 5. |

| Lord Karsus07-06-07, 06:29 PM | You forgot his mandatory barbarian level. -The basic Rage really should be a feat, and not a class ability only. |
| Zanan07-07-07, 06:26 AM | You forgot his mandatory barbarian level. I did not. Slipping into some kind of super-fighter state (whatever it may be called) need not translate into Barbarian Rage. What Drizzt does looks to me more like the "ultimate 5 level Tempest dance of blades" rather than spit-coughing bull-rushing power attacking behaviour of a berserking barbarian. |
| Diffan07-07-07, 07:50 AM | From all the books, comics, games, and short-stories, Drizzt should at least be gestalt fighter//scout with ranger flavor. Throw in some Dervish or Tempest PrC's to boot and there ya go! |
| Valgard07-07-07, 09:44 AM | I did not. When I see that barbarian level I always think that it's better to assign the whirlind frenzy rage variant from Unearthed Arcana rather than the standard babarian rage. |
| Steelwind07-07-07, 11:33 AM | I did not. I know, I was just in my playfully sarcastic mood, I dont really agree that he should have a barbarian level. Now I know the Dervish arguement in regards to Drizzt and yes he may not fit the flavor of the class, but fitting the flavor and fitting the game mechanics are two different things. But a problem with Drizzt is that hes needs so many damn fighter levels for story justification before he can pick up scout/ranger and dervish levels. |
| Crust07-07-07, 03:11 PM | The barbarian level, remember, comes from Drizzt's ten years of isolation in the Underdark, scratching out an existence as "The Hunter." I'm all for the barbarian level. Kane, build Drizzt however you like. If I were to use him in-game, I would definitely change his stats. Make him a dervish. Who cares if Drizzt doesn't have ranks in perform (dance)? Just give him dervish levels. Will the players be pouring over your notes? I should hope not. Just build him as you see fit. My only recommendation beyond that is make sure you build him so he can tangle with the party. I don't know how you plan to use Drizzt, but I suggest building him in such a way that he can best your PCs in combat. If that means dervish, fine. If that means 16+ levels in barbarian, fine. Build him around your PCs' strengths and weaknesses. |

| Steelwind07-08-07, 01:34 AM | Okay heres badass gestalt version Drizzt. Drizzt Do' Urden: Male Drow Fighter 18/Barbarian 2//Scout 5/Dervish 10/Tempest 5; Medium Size Humanoid; 18d10+36 plus 2d12+4; HP 157; Init +7; Spd 65ft; AC 24 (touch 16, flat-footed 19, when TWF 32); BAB +20; Grp +22; Atk +32 melee (1d6+11+1d6 frost/15-20, +3 Frostbrand Scimitar) or +34 melee (1d6+13/15-20, +5 Defending Scimitar); Full Atk +32/+27/+27/+17 (1d6+11+1d6 frost/15-20, +3 Frostbrand Scimitar) and +34/+29/+24 (1d6+12/15-20, +5 Defending Scimitar); SQ drow traits, SR 31, Whirling Frenzy 1/day, Uncanny Dodge, Improved Uncanny Dodge, Trapfinding, Skirmish (+2d6, +1AC), Battle Fortitude +1, Fast Movement +35ft, Trackless Step, Evasion, AC Bonus +3, Dervish Dance 5/day, Movement Mastery, Slashing Blades, Dance of Death, Improved Reaction, Elaborate Parry, Tireless Dance, A Thousand Cuts, Tempest Defense +3, Ambidexterity +0, Two-Weapon Versatility, Two-Weapon Spring Attack; AL CG; SV Fort +17, Ref +17, Will +12; Str 14, Dex 20, Con 15, Int 17, Wis 17, Cha 15 Feats: Blind Fight, Cleave, Combat Expertise, Daylight Adaptation, Dodge, Elusive Target, Greater Two Weapon Fighting, Greater Weapon Focus (scimitar), Greater Weapon Specilization (scimitar), Improved Critical (scimitar), Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Melee Weapon Mastery (slashing), Mobility, Quick Draw, Spring Attack, Track, Twin Sword Style, Two Weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (scimitar), Weapon Specilization (scimitar), Weapon Supremacy (scimitar) I didnt do skills cause frankly I dont care enough, but thats the basic gist. Now I am not a Drizzt fanboy but from the few books I have read of his (pretty much only the latest trilogy of him vs Obould) this seems to somewhat portray his fighting style, if not a little over the top. He has a speed of 65ft which is probably more with those anklets of his, he can jack his AC up to near 50 if he so wished and his doing pretty dang good damage with his dervish dances and god help you if you get in the way of his thousand cuts. |
| Zanan07-08-07, 04:32 AM | Steelwind ... Drizzt Do' Urden: Male Drow Fighter 18/Barbarian 2//Scout 5/Dervish 10/Tempest 5; CR 21; By my calculations, that would be CR 40. A touch too good for my liking. By about a country mile ... |
| Steelwind07-08-07, 07:46 AM | Double Post. |
| Steelwind07-08-07, 07:47 AM | Steelwind ... By my calculations, that would be CR 40. A touch too good for my liking. By about a country mile ... No, I'm using the gestalt rules found in Unearthed Arcana where you advance 2 classes at the same time taking the best of both. For example you were playing a gestalt 1st lvl fighter/rogue you would have +1BAB, d10 hp, good Fort and Ref saves, 8+int mod and the class skills from both fighter and rogue to choose from as well as the abilities of both, such as +1d6 SA and the fighter bonus feat. |
| Red_Wizard07-08-07, 09:07 AM | You're CR would only apply if all other NPC's, and enemies were updated to Gestalt. And Gestalt is a Broken alternate rule, even when you have only a couple players ;). Also, his CR would be 37 Zanan. 18+2+5+10= 35 + 2LA= 37 as a PC, or 35 + 1CR= 36 as an NPC. p.s. I agree it is more than a touch to high for any character, let alone a famous NPC. But for every person liking reasonable levels, you'll always have the ones thinking "Oooo look, I can surgically remove Ao's colin without him noticing, and all I need to do is roll Natural 1" |
| Steelwind07-08-07, 09:34 AM | Okay I removed the CR from the build, and RW how exactly did you come up with CR 37, gestalt doesn't add a CR per each individual class level. The only reason I even did the build is because someone mentioned something about a gestalt Drizzt and I enjoy the thought exercise of building characters and the fact I was bored, but now I'm starting to wish I hadn't. I didnt actually intend to use this or for it to be used in any way, like I said, just a mental exercise I wanted to share. |
| bitter thorn07-08-07, 10:31 AM | I did not. I think that's a fairly narrow view of the Barbarian class. |
| Zanan07-08-07, 06:52 PM | Also, his CR would be 37 Zanan. 18+2+5+10= 35 + 2LA= 37 as a PC, or 35 + 1CR= 36 as an NPC. Matter of factly, I forgot the CR for drow and it is actually the same for PC or NPC Drizzts. LA is, of course, something different. As for the calculations ... Male Drow Fighter 18/Barbarian 2//Scout 5/Dervish 10/Tempest 5 = 18 + 2 + 5 + 10 + 5 = 40 without any gestalt included, plus 1 for him being drow. CR 41. But hey, that's about 3 more posts on anything Drizzt that I have per half-year, so I rather leave this thread as quietly as any drow scout would ... |

| Zanan07-09-07, 04:21 AM | But he only has 20 HD, not 40, and CR is figured by using HD and LA. And with that I will let it be as well. Most likely some Epic rules involved too? HD and LA are, unless I am mistaken, not the only things to determine CR. |

| Diffan07-09-07, 07:54 AM | Yea, it was my post that suggested making him Gestalt. I can see why he has a barbarian level, though you could just add flavor, This was my take on his character by adding only 2 levels to fighter and keeping things some-what the same... | Diffan07-10-07, 04:39 AM | Whirlwind attack would suite drizzt He is a black ball of fury and steel Aye, that he is. |
| natzero07-10-07, 11:19 AM | ya diffen i agree your build is much closer to the real drizzt. as cool as tempest and dervish are i cant see where in the novels he had time to train under a master that wouldnt have attacked or fled at seeing a drow elf. I doubt there are many of each of those classes in icewind dale. But once again it would be fun and im not tryin to be a dick. I just cant see drizzt as an epic level char yet, elminster would and should be able to wipe him off the face of the earth with a well placed glance. Drizzt just hasnt been around long enough, granted he has seen a lions share of combat to advance as far as he has in his relatively short life span so far (if some1 can correct me on exact age). its more likely he is about lvl 18-19 than anything else. the FR campaign setting has him around that level. |
| Steelwind07-10-07, 12:14 PM | Guys, that build was in no way meant to be a true interpertation of Drizzt, it was just me messing around. I agree about him not having received Dervesh training, althought if one were to give him the Tempest PrC, I think that could be explained in his specific training to become house weapon master, but its a moot point anyway. |
| Diffan07-10-07, 12:58 PM | Sorta like an alternate reality Drizzt, except he'd have a beard and be evil. |
| Lord Karsus07-10-07, 02:34 PM | Sorta like an alternate reality Drizzt, except he'd have a beard and be evil. -And, we all learned from a recent thread that Drow can grow beards, if they will themselves to. |
| Diffan07-10-07, 04:52 PM | -And, we all learned from a recent thread that Drow can grow beards, if they will themselves to. Hmmmm, elves/drow with beards........... eww! I guess no one got my trekkie joke. Though it would look pretty damn funny on Lloth! Maybe Corellon should've tacked that on when she was banished as well as being turned into a spider demon. Don't most spiders have hair on them anyways? |
| Lord Karsus07-10-07, 05:39 PM | Hmmmm, elves/drow with beards........... eww! I guess no one got my trekkie joke. -Yes, yes, Mirror Drizzt. We got it. Don't most spiders have hair on them anyways? -Not hair like we (Humans) have. |
| Red_Wizard07-11-07, 03:29 PM | One add on for myself, and that is Yes Zanan, your's was correct. I misread and missed the final class with 5 levels :), So 41 is my corrected answer, which now matches yours. As for steelwind, I wasn't trying to incite anything, just pointing out that for a non-gestalt setting he is an extremely over powered fellow, and even for gestalt he is what, CR 23 or 25? Not sure how to figure it as you branch away from the base classes with PrC's next to the 18 fighter. |
| Diffan07-11-07, 05:58 PM | As for steelwind, I wasn't trying to incite anything, just pointing out that for a non-gestalt setting he is an extremely over powered fellow, and even for gestalt he is what, CR 23 or 25? Not sure how to figure it as you branch away from the base classes with PrC's next to the 18 fighter. With his gestalt build, Drizzt would be CR 21. Fighter 18/barbarian 2=20//scout 5/tempest 5/dervish 10=20; +1 CR from being drow. You don't add the two sides together. It's as if he gained both classes for 1 level. And even in a gestalt world, Elminster, the chosen, most of the evil NPC's would probably be by far more powerful than him. He is after all just a drow with 2 swords. He doesn't have loads of destructive spells to sling at people, spells to make him invisbile, or to fly. |

And as we all know, once you hit epic your pretty much a chump if your not a spellcaster. |
| Diffan07-12-07, 07:31 AM | And as we all know, once you hit epic your pretty much a chump if your not a spellcaster. It's sad, but it's extreamly true. The only way for non-spellcasters to be effective at epic levels is to have lots of magical items that can produce the various effects of potent wizard/sorcerer or cleric spells. Sadly, I don't think Drizzt has any except for maybe the anklets of speed. |
| Red_Wizard07-12-07, 11:58 AM | Well considering as a Gestalt he'd have the best of all saves, and the DC's of all spellcasters are pathetically low thanks to the 3.5 redux, I don't see how anyone can say Drizzt would be weaker than even an epic caster. Most saves would be made, and he has hit points to blow so one spell won't knock him out of the running. All he needs do is get in close, and 'choppy choppy' :P And yeah, I know Gestalt allows you to take 2 for one. I just wasn't sure how the ruling for PrC's went up there. I was also factoring in him taking the 2 barbarian as opposing classes with fighter, hence the 23-25 guess ;) |
| Muddman07-12-07, 01:35 PM | I would probably make him a Ftr 4/ Bar1 (whirlwind frenzy rage variant) / Ranger 6/ Tempest 5. Its 16 levels, all at max attack bonus, gives him tracking like we know he can, mad 2 weapon skills and alot of good spring attacking skills. Mechanically I like the idea of being a scout as opposed to a ranger, but from the books I'd say he's a ranger through and thorugh. |
| Swiftblade07-12-07, 09:52 PM | And actually if you are trying to find a master to teach drizzt to fight with his blades as a dervish, just use some flavor and say that zaknefien was a dervish, he was a weaponsmaster and it would fit very well since he almost started wielding two weapons from the very first time he picked up a blade. Also, remember, it says to add cr2 to 4 for gestalt characters. I also agree that gestalt characters are unbalanced having had a party of them, harder then hades to kill and just too darn powerful. But, just remember that whatever you do make it fun and likeable for the players, they have to live with your drizzt. |

| Zanan07-28-07, 10:57 AM | What is it with everyone wanting to give him stats in scout? He is no real ranger. He's good in sneaking and hiding about in the wilderness, but has not the same bond to Nature as the average ranger has, nor the ability to cast spells nor any greater devotion (spellcasting) link to his patron of choice either. He got the ranger classes (IMHO) because of the great Two Weapon Fighting options and some good hiding and moving silently skills, but not because of any Nature linkage. Though you may argue for his time with the fungi in the Underdark. Scout fills up most ranger roles too and gives him great options too, some more suited to his allround in-novel behaviour than a ranger has. Just MHO, of course. |

I dunno, what about all his training with Montolio(sp?)? And his connection with the Unicorn, and his quick but well done training with the seal to retrieve Guen's figurine. Those skills can't be accomplished with some levels in Scout. He's as much a ranger than i've read about any other characters in Realms novels, except maybe Dove Falconhand. Besides, we all know RAS doesn't write Drizzt's novels in accordance with rules in D&D (his seemingly unlimited amout of Darkness spell-like abilities). But for all of that, he does just kill Orcs by the truck load, a whopping 1/2 CR with 5 hp. Any character of 18 level could take on an army and do well against it despite the numbers. |

I think maybe twice... does that make him less of a ranger? He received ranger traing not scout traing from mooshie and was a two weapon fighter BEFORE he became a ranger. |

He received ranger traing not scout traing from mooshie and was a two weapon fighter BEFORE he became a ranger. All he did as a "ranger" he is well able to do as a "scout". He is quick (like a scout), moves about silently and hides quite well (like a scout) and when his strikes down his first orc, he could well have done it with a skirmish strike. Do note that not everything in a class description needs to be written down like that in a novel. Obviously, the class is only out for a couple of years and if you think the ranger suits him better, no problem. As for the dervish ... scimitars alone make no reason for an unstylish Two-Weapon PrC. The Tempest suits his ability with the scimitars far better and would also combine well with his fighting style - fast and furious. Speaking of fast, this is where the scout comes in again. :D |

| Drizztrocks07-29-07, 01:40 PM | But he doesn't skirmish like the scout can do... He doesn't use the bow except in the first book and a couple times in the prequals I played a ranger that never used spells very often... I think maybe twice... does that make him less of a ranger? He received ranger traing not scout traing from mooshie and was a two weapon fighter BEFORE he became a ranger. i dont remember drizzt using the bow. he might of, my merrorys not to good |

| Diffan07-29-07, 02:45 PM | i dont remember drizzt using the bow. he might of, my merrorys not to good I was when he and Wulfgar met the shaman people, sorta like our native american's, and he used a bow as they were getting away. There are a few other times, but they're spread out through many stories. |
| Beaver07-30-07, 12:32 AM | As for the Dervish idea, the books constantly describe him 'dancing' with his blades, in complete harmony. |
| Zanan07-30-07, 06:10 AM | As for the Dervish idea, the books constantly describe him 'dancing' with his blades, in complete harmony. Well, that could describe his style of fighting, not necessarily some sort of PrC. If I want, my Tempest dances about with his blades too, or is rooted to a spot whirling them blades about in perfect harmony. |
| Swiftblade07-31-07, 06:53 PM | In the end this is all moot, since RA in most of his books has him called a Drow Ranger time and again. So, unless RA let slip a typo, he is calling Drizzt a Ranger, and also remember that he has a link with Guen that is like an animal companion. |
| Eli_the_Tanner07-31-07, 08:25 PM | In the end this is all moot, since RA in most of his books has him called a Drow Ranger time and again. Although this is all true, I don't think Salvatore has ever said that he was a Barbarian. Also during his time in Menzo he was desribed as a drow Warrior. I don't believe many would give him an NPC class just because the same word was used in the books. However his official stats have been interpreted as Fighter/Barbarian/Ranger, clearly the words RAS uses and how that carries over into game mechanics must mean a degree of interpretaion by us. Flavour and Crunch collide again. Personally I believe the current incarnation marries the two as best can be, without resorting to the 'Steelwind Scenario'. |
| Alurvelve08-01-07, 10:32 PM | Drizzt also used a bow against Iceingdeath, and in his short story where he meets a non evil goblin. Its also statted several times that he carried Cat's bow with him on his journeys to and from Silverymoon. |
| Zanan08-03-07, 09:19 AM | Regarding classes ... do note that Drizzt is almost as old as the Forgotten Realms are, desgining-wise. There were no warrior-NPC classes nor scout classes before, so he can hardly use theterm in his books ... and you have to remember that only in recent novel authors have started to give their heroes and villains description that do indeed represent their ingame classes. As for Drizzt's ranger classes, keep in mind that, by canon lore, he never had the chance to change from a drow fighter 17 (Menzo box) to a ranger 16 (Heroes' Lorebook, Accursed Tower) and so on. For that kind of multi-/dual-clasing was no option for elves or drow. What people are trying is to turn him into a decent NPC with the classes around just now - by determining what he did and how that relate into game terms.. |
| JPDeed08-04-07, 10:29 AM | Supporting his ranger levels, I am sure he used animal empathy on a mother bear protecting her cub(s) at one point too. ...Plus he seemed to get along with svirfneblins too, and they aren't REALLY people  |
