| lars04-11-07, 03:00 PM | Read last post two posts to see the final result of this suggested prestige class. |
| Dielzen04-11-07, 05:13 PM | I'd restrict the level 10 ability to only applying to Drow-related activities (casting against Drow, saving against Drow spells, skill checks related to drow, such as Tracking/etc). I'd also increase the skill mod to a +4, but keep the spell ones at +2. I'd change the lvl 6 feat to Reactive Counterspell (or Improved Counterspell) as those are more in keeping with your theme than Item Creation...Metamagic is good, tho. Also, the Quicken theme seems a tad out of touch with Drow Hunting...I understand the "kill them before they kill me" rationale, but it seems overdone within the framing of the PrC itself. If your goal is Super-Quicken Man, then ignore the rest of this paragraph. I'd drop out some of that focus and maybe drop the lvl 10 ability, give them Favored Enemy: Drow benefits (along with the save/penetration bonuses) at 1st level, then at level 10 give them the ability once/day to either half a drow's SR for 3 rounds, or negate it completely for 1 round, which would help your allies as well, since everyone knows that you can't fight Drow by yourself and win very often. |
| Bashfull04-11-07, 06:24 PM | Lars, A few threads below this one, you'll find my thread on the Deep Avenger. The class you've outlined already exists, albeit in 3.0 form. I'm trying to track it down (don't have the relevant issue of Dragon). |
| Dielzen04-11-07, 10:14 PM | Actually, this would be closer to the Gray Mage from that article, as I doubt abilities like Rage are desirable to a spellcaster (there are exceptions, yes). |
| lars04-12-07, 10:39 AM | Description The Drow hunters are a rare and new breed of elven mages specializing, and participating in battles around and in Cormanthor, against drow. The founders of this Order, sought to specialize a group of mages specifically to deal with the drow as they sought to liberate Myth Drannor and Cormanthor in general. The Cormanthor mage rely on skills and abilities to find, see and destroy their darker cousins in an environment not in their favor. Most Drow Hunters took part in the battles in and around Cormanthor, others are mages devoted to protecting the elven establishments in Cormanthor or simply those who bear eternal grudges against their darker skinned cousins. Hit Die: d4. Requirements To qualify to become a Drow hunter, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Skills: Knowledge local(Cormanthor) 2 ranks, survival 2 ranks, Spellcraft 8 ranks. Feats: Spell penetration and Improved Initiative. Spellcasting: Must be able to cast Darkvision. Special: Must have survived battle against drow. Must be race elf. Class Skills The Cormanthor mage’s class skills are Concentration(con), Craft(int), Decipher script(int), Knowledge (any) (int), Spellcraft(int), Spot(Wis), Survival(Wis) Skill points at each level: 2 + int modifier. At each level you gain +1 of existing arcane class. Class Level/BaB/Fort/Ref/Will/Special 1st +0/+0/+0/+2 Feat: Improved Counterspell and Drow Hunter 2nd +1/+0/+0/+3 Free spell 3rd +1/+1/+1/+3 Drow Hunter 4th +2/+1/+1/+4 Feat: Greater Spell Penetration 5th +2/+1/+1/+4 Free Spell 6th +3/+2/+2/+5 Drow Hunter 7th +3/+2/+2/+5 Feat: Reactive Counterspell 8th +4/+2/+2/+6 Free Spell and Darkvision 9th +4/+3/+3/+6 --- 10th +5/+3/+3/+7 Master Drow Hunter Improved Counterspell: The Drow Hunter learns to survive by being able to counter magic. Improved Counterspell is learned for free. Free Spell: At level 2, 5 and 8, the Drow hunter learns one extra spell in addition to the traditional two, when gaining the level. Reactive Counterspell: The Drow hunter improves his ability to counter magic. Greater spell penetration: As a natural development fighting the denizens of Cormanthor, the Drow hunter gains the Greater Spell Penetration feat for free. Drow Hunter: At level 1, the Drow hunter gains Drow as a favoured enemy(functioning as the Ranger skill. The only exception is that the +bonus on Weapon damage is instead a +insight bonus on Spell Penetration. At level 1, the Drow Hunter bonus is +1. At level 3, the Drow Hunter bonus is +2. At level 6, the Drow Hunter bonus is +3. At level 10, the Drow Hunter bonus is +4. Darkvision: In his struggles against the denizen of Cormanthor, The Drow Hunter gain Darkvision. Master Drow Hunter: Reaching level 10, the Drow Hunter, becomes the Master and gains the ability to suppress(Half, roll down) the Spell Resistance of a Drow, for 3 rounds/encounter. Now, this is my first attempt at a Prestige class and it may not be very good. We play in a restricted campaign and I simply want to add some flavour to a mage I would like to play. - Please be constructive with critisism, I'd like to make this work. (Thank you Dielzen, I changed the prestigeclass a whole lot, since I like your ideas and got caught in it. I also added another prerequisit.) Would anyone have a suggestion for a level 9 ability/skill? |
| Zanan04-12-07, 11:29 AM | Found it ;) ... any spell progression? That is, does the character gain caster levels along the way? EDIT: saw it now. Well, given that she gets various goodies, I'd rather buff the HD to d6 and shed 3(+) CL along the way to balance all the stuff. Do make an requirement with regard to caster level necessary, something like. Able to cast 3rd level arcane spells. Drow Hunter ... there is a feat called Elfhunter (for Drow) in Underdark. This could be used as a build for the ability or taken under the name "Drowhunter" instead of what you offer. Then again, remember that you are actually creating a PrC for a wizard, not a ranger, scout, or fighter. Most of what Favoured Enemy provides would not suit a straight wizard character (and thus would hardly be trained to one, IMHO). Do note - description-wise - that Cormanthor does not belong to the drow, they just lair there amongst others. |

The idea of this prestige class is a consequence of the trilogy "The Last Mythal" and "War of the Spider Queen". The Spiderqueen series suggests that a huge amount of especially male Drow seek to the surface and the recapturing of Myth Drannor in "The Last Mythal" spawned my idea to make a prestigeclass that would be a natural creation of Hate against Drow and possibly the largest threat to Myth Drannor(And Cormanthor). Originally I called the prestigeclass "Cormanthor Mage" but I changed it. The point of the "ranger'ish" skills was that the Drow Hunter must be able to see the signs in an extremely dangerous environment. Thats also why he needs to put cross-class skill points into Survival and thats why I, if I was allowed to play this prestigeclass, would most likely add Track at some point. Regarding to the Rangers skill/ability "Favoured Enemy", I made it to something that ONLY is beneficial to Drow and hence trying to balance it like that. Any other suggestions? |
| Dielzen04-12-07, 05:48 PM | I don't know if you have the book Lords of Madness, but there's a feat in there called Aberration Banemagic which adds 2d6 to spell damage against aberration. I'd do something similar at lvl 9 and make it only work (obviously) against Drow. Other than that, I find this to be a fairly solid concept. |

| lars04-30-07, 01:59 AM | As Written above - This is the same prestigeclass but with it's focus on the demon/Devils (Fey'ri) that was the main threat in the events following the trilogy "The Last Mythal". The point of the "ranger'ish" skills was that the Devil Hunter must be able to see the signs in an extremely dangerous environment. Thats also why he needs to put cross-class skill points into Survival. | wtf_thats_my_head05-05-07, 08:25 AM | overpowered??? |
| danisheraser05-06-07, 01:06 PM | overpowered??? Can you specify? Since you ask this question, you obviously feel the PrC is overpowered. |
| Dielzen05-06-07, 01:46 PM | I like how it turned out. I would recommend making the entry reqs a tad tougher, say min 8th lvl to qualify instead of 6th, mostly by way of tighter skill reqs. |
