They've got tons of resistances and bonuses...Plus they only have -2 on charisma as a penalty and being small too.
Drows level up slow, I think dwarves should level up slow too. Not as slow as drows lets say; normal xp needed to level for a dwarf is time 1.5 to a humans xp-level up rate.

Half-Orcs have tons of penalties and I find it very intriguing that dwarves and them level up at the same xp rate.

ok karsus could probably answer this much better than i could ever, but i will try nevertheless ...
Drow have +2 on dex, int and cha and only -2 on con
dwarves have that impressive +2 con and -2 cha
drow have 120 ft (!) darkvision - afaik the longest ranging darkvision ingame as long as you improve it through a prestige class they have light blindness of course, BUT there was a feat introduced somewhere that negates those negative effects.
drow also have 11+char level (!) spellresistance for thats easily a +1 in LA ...

then dwarves get some bonuses on special skill checks (i dont know how often a dwarf actually uses stonecunning for example ...but its not often - and you don't fight big bad giants all the time ^^)

so the half orc on the other side is another view - but wotc considers str more important than all other attributes so +2 str compares to both -2 int and -2 cha losses...and no fighter needs charisma or intelligence (ok int 12 is never wrong though ^^)
ok i agree that halforcs don't have those fancy bonuses you almost never use...
and dwarves are not small - they are medium sized

can't say that dwarves aren't better - BUT perhaps karsus will jump in here and help me out ^^

Thought I'd try to help as much as possible. Though I'm not nearly as knowledgable as others, I am playing a drow currently and there is a dwarf in the party with me.

So far of all the bonuses that the dwarf has he has put one to use. His bonus to Con. We are currently lvl 8, so if that tells you how not overpowered they are. His darkvision is handy but easily correctable as our human fighter wears a helm for that. The bonus for being sturdy is nice but our dwarf is rarely in actual melee combat (bard that uses ranged weapons) so it hasn't come up very often.

The drow on the other hand deserve their LA. Again darkvision nice. Aside from that they can use darkness, fearie fire, and lights once per day, this has come up many times and is very usefull, especially for confusing enemies. Bonuses are super, I'm a wizard, but I use a different variant, I don't have bonus to dex or negative to con. Most important, so I've found out, is the spell resistance. Currently I have spell resist 20. I've been through fights and never had a spell touch me no matter how many were cast. In fact I had a mage working for the city gaurd cast hold person on me 4 times before I failed a resist on it.

I hope this shows you how underpowered compared to drow dwarves are and thus how equally powered they are to other races.

They're not small, they're medium with 20ft base speed. It's a big minus, nothing's slower than a dwarf in full plate. Their women also have beards. If you want a cool dwarf, be a fighter, place your best stat (4D6 and remove the lowest) in constitution, grab dauntless and toughness. Suddenly you've got an amazing amount of health. 10 (ftr) + 5 (dauntless) + 3 (toughness) + 4/5 (con) = 23 on first level.

And as above, drow are far better than dwarves. The feat that adjusts the light blindness is daylight adaption. And drow live longer.

Dwarfs are GRUMPY, boisterous, heavy drinkers who tend to 'look down at' things that are non-Dwarven, hence the fact that they aren't very Charismatic.

Did someone say the dwarf in their group was a Bard? At least have the decency to call him a Skald.

Also, even toward the end of 2e, they ret-conned the female dwarves as to NOT having beards. However, certain novels, most notably the Moonshaes, have bearded females, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that certain clans have bearded females, whereas most do not.

I just say that the Moonshae female Dwarves are the only ones, which fits because the Moonshaes have always been just a little different from the rest of the Realms.

You're somewhat on target, but the Cha penalty for Shield Dwarves is mostly because of their socially defensive, guarded natures. Granted they've had to deal with these hostile forces for more than one millenium:
- Duergar (Caused by the Kin Clashes)
- Drow
- Orcs
- Goblinoids (Be it goblins, hobgoblins, or bugbears)
- Giantkin (Mostly ogres, trolls, and Hill Giants)

I mean, you try keeping your investments (be it in architecture, craft, treasure or what-not) intact if so many different creatures in this world (including but likely not limited to the ones listed above), and feel like dealing oh-so-happily with every human civilization around you!

Also, Shield Dwarves have looked down on the follies of civilizations lost around theirs, particularly Netheril and Myth Drannor. The race as a whole only begun to truly trust arcane magic in recent years.

dwarves have land speed 20ft. against drows 30ft
their masiv constitution score is only thing thats helping them in fight one on one against drow hit and rune tactic.

But I always play with dwarf and kill drow :D
And look suspiciously on everything thats not dwarven made;)

I didn't say that! I was talking about speed.

Think he was referring to the women having beards bit equating to a Cha = beauty thing. Doubt it would have much of anything to do with how they got along with each other... we're kinda predisposed of finding our own species attractive in order to propagate the species and all. Think Mad Mage summed it up best though as to why that Cha penalty is there.
Mirashira

02-20-07, 02:45 AM
actually the dwarven fighter in heavy armor is faster than a drow one ...
they have 20 ft BUT retain this speed even in medium/heavy armor and medium/heavy load...
if your drow wears heavy armor his/her base speed decreases to 15 ft -.-

that's why i did not want to compare those land speeds -.-

Why does everyone insist that Cha = beauty?

'Cause half the time it is, and half the time it isn't, depending on which monster entry you're looking at and what article you're reading. That being said, I think in previous editions, Dwarves took a minor hit to Comeliness.

Did someone say the dwarf in their group was a Bard? At least have the decency to call him a Skald.

I wouldn't. The Dwarves of the Realms aren't Norse enough to really require that, I don't think.

Also, even toward the end of 2e, they ret-conned the dwarves as to NOT having beards. However, certain novels, most notably the Moonshaes, have bearded females, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that certain clans have bearded females, whereas most do not.

I am PRETTY sure that Ed himself has said that in his Realms, female dwarves have beards.

A dwaven bard is very flavorful. What do dwarves love just as much as making stuff, killing stuff and drinking stuff?... Singing about stuff. Whenever they march they sing whenever they fight they sing, whenever they are hammering they sing, so naturally you might find some that do it better than others.

Shield Dwarf bards would likely act as historians and story tellers for their people. Also, while their Bardic Music wouldn't be as strong as, say, a Human Bard, Shield Dwarf Bards gain a bonus to certain skill checks, namely Appraise checks involing stone or metal objects, making them shrewd bargainers.

You can bet that a Shield Dwarf Bard 20 with an Int score of 16 and max ranks in Appraise would really make some get their way in a market dealing with metal or stone items. ;)

In addition a Shield Dwarf Bard, though not as much of a straightforward combatant like at least a Cleric is - let alone a Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin or Ranger. With their bonuses to damage against orcs and goblinoids as well as their dodge bonus to AC against giants, a Shield Dwarf Bard will have an easier time surviving against said opponents.

These are some suggested builds I have for a Shield Dwarf.

1) Ranger 10/Giant-Killer(SM)* 10. With the Ranger's Favored Enemy and AC bonus against giants, this may make for a decent member of a giant-slaying party, or as an NPC that helps a party in a high-level giant-heavy campaign.

2) Ranger 10/Fighter 5/Hordbreaker(SM) 5. Once again, favored enemy, but this time you're likely using it against orcs or goblinoids. According to Silver Marches, the Hordbreaker's Horde Enemy ability stacks with a Ranger's Favored Enemy, which increases its effectiveness. The Fighter levels were added for the sake of extra combat feats for front-line effectiveness.

3) Fighter 10/Dwarven Defender 10. Somewhat self-explanatory.

4) Fighter 17/Exotic Weapon Master(CW) 3. This gives a Shield Dwarf a large amount of combat options if they specialize in either a Dwarven Waraxe or Dwarven Urgrosh, or any other exotic weapon, for that matter.

5) Paladin of Moradin 10/Dwarven Defender 10. Paladins of Moradin (namely from Citadel Adbar) can freely multi-class as such, and while the PrC is just a hint more geared towards Fighters, a Paladin that gets (Improved) Uncanny Dodge, Damage Reduction AND the defensive stances is looking at a bonus in combat where they may be looking at taking a bit of a beating.

6) Paladin of Moradin 10/Hammer of Moradin(PGtF) 10. My advice: read the PrC entry and figure out why. ;)

7) Barbarian 15/Battlerager(RoF) 5.

8) Barbarian 10/Fighter 5/Battlerager 5.

9) Fighter 10/Barbarian 5/Battlerager 5.

I'll give some non-melee class suggestions in another post.

*Note: Suggested 3.5 change for this PrC's requirements is to change Wilderness Lore for Survival

I play with this character PoM 10/ HoM 8 third time in the row its great.

Recently I think of trying Dwarven Chanter Pres class i found it on WotC pages, and seams nice adition to my dwarven group.

And in adition to dwarven singing :
Dwarven Chanter
The legendary power of the dwarven chanters has been the source of much scholarly and religious speculation. Many attribute the very success of the dwarven race to this special gift. Ancient dwarven lore speaks of chanters who led their people through the cavernous trails for weeks at a time, allowing them to outpace enemies who would have surely destroyed them. Other tales speak of incredible mining expeditions that returned with five times the yield thought possible, made possible by employing chanters with their mining groups.
Chanters work as foremen, clergy, advisors, and military personnel. Wherever they go, chanters are able to bring aid and prosperity with them, and no large dwarven army or community is without several of these powerful allies. Some chanters choose to take up the adventuring life, often to spread the word of their gods or assert the power and relevancy of the dwarven race. Many were adventurers before they were called to this path and are simply continuing their journeys, albeit with newfound abilities and powers far surpassing what they had achieved before.

*Glances at the Drow-related-grammatical errors, keels over and dies.*

*Ghost leaves some tidbits.*

Drows is not a word. Drow is the accepted plural and singular form.

I say that Dwarves have another penalty. The fact that they are harder to roleplay correctly (for most people that I know). If you're playing a KickInTheDoor style game, then you've not got a lotta trouble, but if you're playing with a plot and a storyline, it's harder to play with characters as wild and unpredictable as those gruff creatures known as dwarves.

Jaia, I have never thought of most dwarves as wild and unpredictable. Those nasty little drow yes but never dwarves. Stalwart, steady, and levelheaded usually come to mind when I think of dwarves.
I can't understand wanting to play a drow either.
And no I wouldn't want to play that one in a million CG drow who is a young noble fleeing the wickedness of drow society & his/her matron mother, just trying to find a place to call home in the lands above and gain acceptance from everyone (sad music with violins play in the background)

But if you got trapped in a cave-in, or were snowed-in while trying to cross the mountains, a Drow is a much better companion.

Dwarf just tastes nasty, all stringy and gamey, whereas a good Drow steak goes quite well with a nice Merlot. ;)

@Dan - I know the Dwarven Bards in FR aren't Skalds, I was just surprised that someone would take a Cha-based class with a race that takes a Cha hit.

Kudos for excellent role-playing over power-playing, my friend!

If I was you DM, I'd be sneaking you all kinds of extra exp just for that. :D

That's why I play a chaotic evil drow, the only reason I ran away from home is my family was destroyed by another family and when I returned home from a little adventuring stint I got ****** and killed three of the priestesses (spelling?) of the family who got rid of mine. I suggested I was running from something and my DM said it couldn't be away from a cruel civilization and to "find myself" in the upperworld lol. I agreed I love my character, roleplaying him is pretty easy, I do what I want to who I want whenever I want. I'm a wizard/ cleric/ mystic theurge. Plus we have a demon and a recently dominated skullcrusher ogre in our party. We rock out. Best pary I've been in yet.

True, true, but I know that I don't qualify for that, neither do most people I've played with. And since that is (truthfully) over several hundred*, I've found that quite common. There are a lot of problems for playing dwarves, at least for those that find themselves to be as Chaotic or Neutral as me.

Oh, and one more problem (for me), if someone has successfully portrayed the Essence of Insanity, or a very truthfully Chaotic Evil or Neutral character, they're not good for playing dwarves, and, when they do, they end up just as "wild and unpredictable as those gruff creatures named dwarves" as I said.

EDIT: Footnote:*:
And I've only been playing since 2002. Wow. Wowww. I didn't quite fully realize that until now. Still, I've only gotten to complete the campaigns about half the time.

I thought that Flogging Molly would be a good example of a Dwarven band, rude, abstract, and they're Irish.

The drinking songs, however, are piratey, as shown by my siggie.

Originally Sung by Dave King.

I'll wait for you till I turn blue,
There's nothin' more a man can do,
Don't get your bollocks in a twist,
Settle down, don't take a fit!
Ya drank with demons straight from Hell,
They almost nearly won as well,
Ya wiped the floor with victory,
Then puked until you fell asleep!

Blackened was the banshee's wail,
These boots will never fill her jail,
So you crawled into an empty boat,
For the Gulf of Mexico!
Till Cortez came an' when so did you
From the ashes charred and blue,
Smellin' like a Salty Dog,
Back from Hell where you belong!

Anarchy, the scourge of every sea,
The Antichrist aboard a rig,
With us your cutthroat thieves!
The ship went down, we all near drowned,
Ya stood there on the deck,
Till the Spanish came, and flogged yer arse,
And dragged you from the wreck!

They threw a rope around yer neck,
To watch you dance the jig of death,
Then left ya for the starvin' crows,
Hoverin' like hungry *****s!
One flew down, plucked out yer eye,
The other he had in his sights,
Ya snarled at him, said "Leave me be,
I need the bugger so I can see!"

Now that's definitely a drinking song.

I am PRETTY sure that Ed himself has said that in his Realms, female dwarves have beards. They do, but Ed also speak of a 'Nair-like' salve applied to the face of most female dwarves early in their lives, which stops all facial (or in other locations) hair growth from there on end. I believe he also mentions that male dwarves find hairless (i.e. 'salved') or clean-shaven dwarf females more attractive.

Mind you, this is all from Dwarves Deep, a 1st or 2nd edition product, which also stated that due to their low fertility rate, dwarves commonly raided human villages for female, as to enslave them for reproductive purposes...

a lotta people think they perfer chaoticness even if they are actually VERY lawful (one of our players is lawful for sure yet he keep describing himself as chaotic) for some reason people put chaotic on a pedistal and I think I know why. because the media glorifes the "rebel" look at the movies every year you see at least one, useally several movies that feature the heros as rebels, now granted this isn't TOO abd when it's say.. star wars, but half the time these rebels are at best rebels without a cause, and at worst the film is simply glorifing criminals.

meanwhile you don't see a whole lotta movies that tend to encourgae respect for "lawful" tradtions.

combine this withthe misinterpreted idea that lawful people have NO flexability, and must contiune to serve a ruler whose totally nuts well.. you can understand why they might hold lawful as being poor.

I once had one of my players actually state OOCly that if they where told to bow to a king in game their response would be "kiss my ass"

Well, my Sun Elf Wizard is Chaotic Good, but he isn't like that, he philosophicaly chooses to be what he is because he values the freedom to choose, the individual over the race, the wandering over the settling, but he also has a mayor in politeness and a no angst policy. And he kicks the "complexity" of the anti-hero by light years. In the last session one of my players used mage hand to make the glasses dance while they were served, and to make an enlightening joke (the kind that Erevan favors) my character used the same spell to grab one of the glasses and spill it's contents over the showman. Lots of fun for the patrons of the tavern, not so much for the player and the rest of the table, they tried to charm my character, completely futile because not only alediran has a base 11 will save against enchantements (the DC was 16), he also was favored by Erevan that night for his joke.

they are due for an appointment to visit suzeil within the not too distant future. I wonder if said player read the laws of cormyr :D

If your player actualy does that, send him into prision, that will be a major laugh.

Female dwarves DO have beards...... tis written in Novels and source therefore CANON Duh!!!!!!!Hmmmm....

After much searching - Arctic and Grey dwarves DON'T. It doesn't say either way about Jungle dwarves, just that they have long hair that they wear like clothes.

Gold, Shield, and Urdunnir females 'may' have beards. That is exactly how it is written, so it could go either way. I guess you may be right, but I remember something about this just before the release of 3e, that the Dwarven women would no longer have beards. I guess the designers changed their minds.

I'll have to burn all of my FR stuff now... Eberron here I come.. :allalone:

Didn't care for Eberron... looks very nice on the surface, has some tremendously cool ideas, but the storyline/history/whatever is just leaving me cold beyond details.

Was that just said by a Denizen of This Forum? Oh My Crap! Bubs Has Turned Mark Into An Idiot! Let's see... Pulp Adventure and Complete, Total, and Horrendous Idiocy of the Players, versus Well-Thought Out Lore, Probability For Complete Satisfying Adventure, and Stupidity of the Core-Writers. Hmmmmm...

Is the character Cormyran? I was unaware that all foriegners have to grovel by law. This is one of the the reasons my Daggerdalesman Ranger would never want to meet royalty. He has spent his life butchering Zhents from his mid teens. He bows to no one. He's not chaotic, BTW, he's NG. He simply doesn't recognize anyone elses ownership of him.

a lotta people think they perfer chaoticness even if they are actually VERY lawful (one of our players is lawful for sure yet he keep describing himself as chaotic) for some reason people put chaotic on a pedistal and I think I know why. because the media glorifes the "rebel" look at the movies every year you see at least one, useally several movies that feature the heros as rebels, now granted this isn't TOO abd when it's say.. star wars, but half the time these rebels are at best rebels without a cause, and at worst the film is simply glorifing criminals.

meanwhile you don't see a whole lotta movies that tend to encourgae respect for "lawful" tradtions.

combine this withthe misinterpreted idea that lawful people have NO flexability, and must contiune to serve a ruler whose totally nuts well.. you can understand why they might hold lawful as being poor.

I once had one of my players actually state OOCly that if they where told to bow to a king in game their response would be "kiss my ass"

Showing respect isn't the same as groveling.

Showing respect isn't the same as groveling.

Generally true, but I don't automatically accept forced obeisance as either a good or lawful virtue.

It's not, and I, at least, never inferred such. :)

Half-dwarves were supposed to look just like dwarves, but being a few inches taller.'Were supposed to'? Human/dwarf hybrids do indeed appear as somewhat taller dwarves.
