| 1 ton ghost08-31-07, 12:57 PM | would it be in bad form to incorpoate Warforged (Eberron) under the pretext of a Gondar miracle or similarly based revelation? Mystra perhaps giving them the "lifespark" as magic is pretty much essential to their creation? that is to say, if they are drawn from the Weave, their lifeforce is essentially a segment of her divinity or her own life/essence. on that note, it's polar opposite, Shadow Weave? evil warforged? perhaps that is going too far in that they are not inherrantly evil but choose to be under traditional means. who knows. we had simply employed them w/ much success under the aegis of Gond blessing Toril w/ another form of life given that far too many are being exterminated indiscriminantly w/ all the wars, Draco Rage, etc. seeing as they don't require any real resources, apart from raw materials to create them, they aren't a strain on any specific climate or pose a serious threat to many lifeforms. they don't need food/water/air/etc. if anything, i imagine they'd make a terribly effective labor pool as they can work 24hrs/day, aren't fatigued, and so on. i guess the fallout would be more socio-political than racial. thoughts, ideas, comments? |
| Xaean08-31-07, 08:24 PM | IMHO it's a good idea, it's an additional choice for character creation and your explanation for their existince sounds logical. They might have been crafted as foot soldiers by Halruaan wizards - Halruaa has powerful magic but lacks powerful melee warriors, they might have used some Lantanes automaton as a basic concept. Warforged could be the creation of the Duergar: The dark dwarves are both expert crafters and able arcanists - and they definitly have good use for warriors that can't have their brains sucked off by illithids. Their is relativle few official material on the duergar, so it's easier to add a few elements to their culture. They might be a legacy from Netheril that was rediscovered only recently. Or only very few warforged survived, so it would be easy to add a single ancient PC or NPC. They might be extraplanar beings from Gond's domain in the House of Knowledge. This gives them the extraplanar subtype, but it is good explanation why a construct can be alive. The zulkir of conjuration succeeded in binding the Soul of an outsider to a construct - and did so repeatedly. Just be aware of the fact that - unfortunatly - some people are quite zealous in their hatred for Eberron or other settings in general - if you have such players in your group, better don't use warforged - or change their name and appearence enough that the players don't recognize them. |
| MarkHall08-31-07, 08:41 PM | For the record, I'm reluctant to make them Netherese or Thayan, just because it has a "been there, done that" quality to it. However, they would be similar to the "Wood Golem" that Thay has started turning out... more intelligent, with the lessened invulnerabilities of a "living construct", but commercially viable creations. |
| 1 ton ghost09-01-07, 02:09 AM | excellent ideas gentlemen. we just like diversity. realistic diversity anyway. i wouldn't go so far as to use the entire campaign book in FR, i like toril just fine, but i ilke to pick and choose outside feats and races occaisionally from 3rd parties. the halruaa allusion seems particularly apt. i could even see a limited lightning rail there given their proclivity for the sky ships and other "big magic" plot hooks, etc. that and it's proximity to Lantan. who knows. of course, had to add Repair-ish cures to arcane spell lists. this was before SplCmpnd came out too. easy enough to troubleshoot through, but the diplomacy/down time scenarios were getting deep to complicated. i mean, it's awkward enough when the crew plus its half-orc goes into strange tavern, not you got mr. roboto sippin' a can of valvoline (his cure light potion) trying to look nonchalant and "blend in". amusing. you'd be amazed how effective not sleeping is, paticularly when that perpetual insomniac is your primary melee combatant watching over the mage, his only means of curative magic basically... |
| lavekkia09-04-07, 10:28 AM | In an old thread was suggested to place them as relics from ancient Raumathar as "super - soldiers": human souls of dead soldiers trapped into construct bodies. Another option could be making them creations of the Kara - Tur Giants in Grey. This way you could include much material from Secrets of Xen Drick. |

| 1 ton ghost09-07-07, 01:36 PM | how refreshing. nice to see there are a few creative thinkers that go beyond the mechanical min/max approach and actually pay attention to flavor/plot hooks/history. nj. purity aside, these are all fresh and original ideas to which i thank you. i suppose somone will wish to Faerun-ize Changelings as well. that's pretty open-ended there given their isn't really much niche culture on dopplegangers. i'm sure Mask would be down and all, but warforged are easier to flesh out given their grounding and ethos i suppose. |
| MarkusTay6309-07-07, 03:10 PM | If you're willing to wait a year, I got a funy feeling BOTH Warforged and Changelings will be joining the Realms anyway. They are BOTH becoming 'core' races. |

By example, there never was Orcs and Half-orcs and all in Dragonlance, and it have not changed. FR will not change just for this, except perhaps following the current trend of suggesting ways to incorporate stuff X in Y, ideas. |

Well, we do know that the Netherese has created a race of intelligent constructs before, the Tombtappers. It's possible (despite being rather cliche), to have warforged be a remnant of Netheril. Personally, I'd go with Raumathari prototypes. |
| MarkusTay6309-08-07, 12:03 AM | Or have them come from the Utter East - they fit well with Bloodforged. |
| godbeepit09-08-07, 12:30 AM | The thing I like best about warforged is that they can be repaired back from below -10 (From what I have learned in my very very short time in Eberron). As such, to introduce one the DM simply says: "You hear a loud whistling noise and a bright red dot in the sky. As you watch it, it becomes bigger and bigger and you soon realize its a something flying AT you! It hits the ground with an incredible roar tearing up the earth all around you. Peering into the crater, you see what appears to be a human made of stone and wood." *Rolls terminal velocity fall damage. Turns to warforged's player.* "You take this many. You are unconscious." |
| KnightoftheWhiteRose09-08-07, 12:30 PM | I have always felt a blend or magic and technology was a cool feel for dnd. the Warforged are among my favorite races even though i have never played one. I created a cybernetic Golem in 2e and it had some success with my playing groups. but the Warforged is a more defined aspect of an earlier idea. I agree that Settings normally have their own version of "Core" and races are normally modified in some way. i would find a FR version of the WF to be very cool. i would also like to add that as Orc's and Half Orc's are normally not part of Offical Canon for DragonLance and are not Supported by the Offical Canon Gaming Products their has indeed been atleast a single Half Orc in Krynn. Novel- Kendermore Character - Denzil - Half Orc of Kendermore, Rides a Nightmare. (Story by Mary Kirchoff) quite a fun read. yet not supported by most fans. :OMG! |
