Greenbound way overpowered? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I really love this template from Lost Empires of Faerūn, but I feel like it is incredibly powerful. I'm running a game that has lots to do with the land, jungles, and plant creatures and this would be a great addition I think. Does anyone have suggestions for either toning it down or replacing it? The one thing I already know of is the Woodling template from MMIII, which I also really like, but I do like how the LEoF one gets some great abilities.

Thoughts? Does anyone else share my opinion that it is way overpowered?

It's a great feat. Just take it. Have you ever met a druid villain that really scared you? no! Give him that feat, and things might change.

About time druids get some attention I say!

Wow! Thanks for pointing this one out to me.
I have no problem with the munchkin tendencies of splatbooks (despite my sig). After all, why would someone plop down 40 bucks for a gamebook unless he can derive some in-game advantage from it? Since this is a setting book, i don't even expect my players to look at it, let alone loot it for cruchy goodness. I, on the other hand, can now give my NPC druids some extra bite (well...slam, anyway).
For a more balanced game I would limit the Greenbound Summoning feat's availability by placing it three steps up in a feat chain: Spell Focus (Conjuration) and Augment Summoning being required first, for example.
You could make it available only for higher level casters or just reduce the effects to a couple of the elements in the Greenbound template. You are the boss here.

The 3.0 splat books had a really disgusting druid feats: Plant Defiance and Plant Control. If these would be stacked with Greenbound Summoning, it would really make for a nasty druid.

These feats gave "control plant" powers to the druid, and the ability to command/rebuke plants... I wonder if Complete Divine updated that one...

Just checked both Complete Divine and Complete Adventurer. No sign of said feats.

See Ed Bonny's post at the bottom here:

Greenbound Summoning ought to have been a metamagic feat for SNA with a 2 level increase.

That makes MUCH more sense. It's still powerful, but the +2 slot level metamagic note was an critical omission.
It was fun to read through the other board entries -some people really hate FR!!!

Hmm. Well, I wasn't really talking about the feat to summon Greenbound creatures. Though I would never allow that in my game. You guys, the Greenbound template is WAY too overpowered for the CR increase (though I am not as versed in level adjustment, the suggested +8 makes sense, though I don't know anyone out there that would take that kind of hit for a PC). The increased ability scores alone defy any general increase of +2 to CR out there I feel. With the ridiculous skill bonuses, DR, Fast Healing, SPlike abilities, bonus to grapple, TREMORSENSE, and energy immunities, I just don't see this as a +2 adjustment to the CR. I would say +4 at the very least.

My opinion about the Woodling creature is, I feel like they are supposed to be creatures touched by the plant world, but they get all these summon nature's ally spell-like abilities... That doesn't make sense, I actually much more enjoy the wall of thorns SPabil from the Greenbound.

Looks like I'm going to have to mesh these templates together to make it a bit more balanced.

Wow! +2 hey? that's different!

I think +1 could be ok though... I need to reread the template further...

PDK you're mad. +1 level adjustment for FH 3, DR 10/slashing AND magic, +16 to hide and ms in forested areas, +6 to str, +2 Dex, +4 Con, +4 Cha, Tremorsense, Grapple bonus, resistence to cold and elec 10, and spell like abilities....

No. Look at the Fiendish template which applies similar, yet meager qualities to creatures for no more than +1 or +2 (depending on HD).

The template is overpowered in my opinion, I am very surprised at everyones' response actually. Has anyone read the Woodling template from MMIII? I feel like they are similar, though the latter seems more balanced...

And then when all is said and done give the PC the Verdant Lord PrC and that'll be one wicked, near-unbeatable Druid. :D

Yep. If you gaze too long into a forest, the forest gazes also at you, after all.

LA +2 sounds good imo. It is not weak at all, but druids have an entire plethora of great feats, so no big difference there :D

That's the one my PC was going for... from the masters of the wild splat book yes? Has this PrC been threepointfived?

Not yet afaik, which means that with a little change in skills it's still legit.

It's very confusing to watch you two post. I tend to see avatars before I see usernames, so for a moment, I thought PDK was talking to himself.
