i want to play a non-evil kobold but i need opinions... [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-20-07, 05:01 PM i've been told that in DnD you can play as anything as long it is in the monster manual, so i decided i might play my favorite creature in FR/DnD...
a kobold. i never play evil characters but i would gladly play a neutral/good character (i usually don't play anything chaotic though. most of the time i play neutral good).
edit: i've never played DnD before and all of my FR knowledge comes from the game neverwinter nights for PC but i plan on playing DnD as soon as i find a place around my area.

08-21-07, 11:55 PM I wanted to give you a link or reference but I can not find where I got the info from at this time. I thought it might have been in one of the Polyhedron magazines I had but I looked through the and didn't find the info.

There was a write up somewhere (maybe someone else will remember where it was from) about a kobold named Una who was a specialty priest of Lathander and was NG.

I have part of the write up on a sheet I had to use her as an NPC and that read: "Bright eyes, cheerful, enthusiastic. Wants to find a group that is kind and inquisitive, who will explore new areas or interesting/intriguing places and will try to befriend creatures that others would attack. Wants to find a bard who will teach her how to play other instruments. Wants to find or buy a suit of armor in her size. Dresses in priestly robes."

It's not true neurtal, but it might give you some ideas of playing a non-evil kobold.

08-22-07, 09:40 AM Well, first you must ask, "how did this kobold get to the surface?" If he was exiled, he will feel withdrawn and feels he has no reason to hurt others like he has been. Ifhis egg was found by a human, or elf, or dwarf, and was raised by them, then he will have some of the traits of that race. If he was prejudiced in his community, then he will feel a bit offended towards others of his race.
Unless, of course, he decided that his cavern had too many walls and wanted to see what was beyond them. Or you could do a Drizzt spinoff- he hated his people's evil ways and decided to leave them behind in search of a better life against the stereotypes of his race.

I actually have ideas for a goodly kobold community, led by a silver or copper dragon who believes that every creature has its value. Maybe a few kobolds from a community like this one decided to leave home to explore, so they were good from the start.

08-22-07, 10:29 AM While the NWN games aren't exactly the most canonical background sources, try checking out the character of Deekin. He's a CG Kobold Bard, and I always found him amusing.

EDIT: I note that in your first post, you mentioned that you've played the NWN games. :P

He started out withdrawn, but as he got more used to living on the surface he began to really show how enthusiastic he was about his magical gifts of hurting things. In combat he would cast power word pain on things and run around shouting "You're pancakes are miiiiiiiiine!!!!!" And then after combat he would jump up and down on the enemies' bodies shouting "Squishy pancakes! Squishy pancakes!" But that's aside from the point.

I think I kinda played against the usual stereotype of the kobolds, but it was nevertheless fun. Mostly, as said before, you have to decide why he's on the surface and then just decide how he reacted to having to be on the surface.
