StoneSinger 01-03-08, 03:29 AM	Ive been working on a campaign and I have an idea. Drow are not really above anything when it comes to getting an edge on other drow or other races, from this maybe they even use Half Drow (which they may call half human or half thrall) I was thinking of a Mercenary house or sect under the control of a much larger house that selectively breeds half drow as stronger shock troops. Usable for anything from gaurding the ruling houses, patrolling the outskirts of the settlements too dangerous for real drow, or just enforcers for hire. Maybe under the thumb of a character like Jarlaxle? For a physical description I was thinking....about 5"0, stockier than normal drow, stronger facial features, dark dark grey skin, and white short cropped hair (nothing to grab onto). Actually Ryld Argith from the cover of Annihilation comes to mind. Thoughts?

Khaelieth 01-13-08, 06:19 PM	Don't need to dilute or despoil elven blood. Quaggoths, orcs and such are good shock troops that can be shot if they retreat.
Nevulin 01-16-08, 11:59 AM	I have a hard time believing that most Drow would consider making half-Drow for anything at all. It is very apparent that they don't like or look down on anything that isn't Drow. I would assume that if they had a need for a niche to be filled by bigger, stronger, shock troops, they would simply train certain Drow to fit their need. Simply put, they don't even trust each other, why would they trust a being that is only half of what they are?

Considering that many half-drow are made through rape, I imagine the drow in question wouldn't really think through their actions and the results (pregnancy). Drow can become caught up in their passions, and the rape would be seen as having power over another creature, which evil drow like having. However, some Vhaeraunites intentionally seek out elven communities and surface elves as partners. Since most children born from a drow and surface elf pairing are drow, the Vhaeraunites see this as a way to raise numbers of drow on the surface. StoneSinger, your idea seems very plausible. Though I'd make the half-drow a little taller (around 5 ft. 3-4 in. on average) and have dusky skin. Here (http://www.toddlockwood.com/galleries/new_art/01/zhai.shtml) is an example, by Todd Lockwood. I'm sure there are many bands of drow mercenaries for hire, scratching around the edges of their society to make a living. Many Vhaeraunites would fit this description. They would also be more likely to visit the surface, encountering humans, and thus, half-drow result. Also, humans may be taken as slaves by such bands to be sold or traded back to their societies.
Taita_of_Imaskar 01-18-08, 02:48 PM	While it is true that are many half drow abound, like the crin'thi of Dambrath, any amount of drow heritage would be viewed by drow society as an "upgrade" to any one who might have it. Dambrath is prime example, the ruling caste is all part drow, they even count generations away from drow ancestry to figure out status of "part-drow" in their society. Maybe actively breeding drow to serve as elite lieutenants in an army who will be making war in distant lands or ethe such, but I doubt they would throw drow blood in to something that would be used as shock troops. Drow are too proud of what they are to allow something that they intentionally mixed with themselves to be thrown in with orcs, grimlocks, quaggoths and the like. I think they're more likely to forcibly mix other races to get elite shock troops than dirty their heritage.
silverlock001 01-18-08, 06:21 PM	As I remember the Drow is a female orientated society, at least in Underdark. The males have very little power or freedom. It stands to reason that in their chaotic views that the thought of children in most forms would be used as tools. The half-drow is a useful tool to have. They are expendable, better able to cope above ground, and can be accepted easier in most other societies.
