The plant type creatures are immune to all mind-affecting effects. Does this mean that they can't allow certain effect to affect them, such as a bard's inspire courage? Or is this immunity something that is on whether the creature likes it or not?

I ask because I am thinking of getting a volodni scout/ranger as a cohort for my bard and would like to boost my cohort with my music. Would I have to get the Green Ear feat to accomplish this or can a willing plant type creature let it affect it?

Lol, never realised this. No, net even a willing volodni could enjoy your bards inspiratonal couragesong except when you've taken the green ear feat available from 7th level and on.

That's not entirely true.... if the bard is using drum or similar instruments to do so, even deaf can feel the exact vibration and beat of the music. There is no reason why vegie ... err.. plant life can't be inspired.

Volodnis are not deaf (and neither are most of the Plant type monsters). However, Inspire Courage is a mind-affecting ability, and creatures with the Plant type have immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).

That's why there's a feat (Green Ear) that lets you affect Plant creatures with your bardic music, just like there's one (Requiem) that lets you affect undead (also immune to mind-affecting effects).
