The MM merely states that humanoids and giants can become lycanthropes. What of humanoids that already have the shapechanger subtype (changelings, for instance)? Can they be lycanthropes? And what of other humanoid subtypes, such as reptilian or dragonblood (Races of the Dragon)? Can a draconic human be a lycanthrope, or does the fact that it begins with a template which lends a subtype exclude it entirely?

I understand the concept of applying templates one over another sequentially (and thus finding which ones can or can't be layered by looking at changed types). I merely wonder if subtypes matter at all with the lycanthropic template. I would greatly appreciate the perspectives of fellow detail-mongerers.

personally i wouldn't have dopelgangers, pharimm, or the other guys who the symbul likes to turn into mushrooms and i've rather inconveniently forgotten the name of be able to become one. it would just be silly.

then again from a sneaky dm's point of view. anything that can add a plot element if it can become a lycanthrope and isn't plain stupid, such as a golum/ werewolf i would figure out some way of sticking it in.

IIRC Shapeshifters are immune to Lycanthropic curses, therefore they can't become Lycanthropes.

Any humanoid or giant subtypes may become lycanthropes, as long as they're still Humanoin (x) or Giant (x) before the template is applied. The exception would be, of course, any race/etc that specifically says it can't be lycan'd.

I'm currently building a Kobold Wererat for a home campaign.

Now, what exactly is IIRC...? I'm afraid I'm still familiarizing myself with the names of the vast amount of printed material out there, beyond core rules and the FRCS...

Excellent information, all--thank you for what's currently here, and whatever else may come.
