Yeah, I need to make a variant paladin class for my elf. It's a core class, not a PrC.

Running name is Moon Knight, it's a class exclusive to elves born in Evermeet or Evereska...

It's basically the same as the Paladin, except instead of Law, they venerate Chaos. They are basically knights who defend the elven kingdoms and protect their peoples' freedom.

Another noteworthy change is that instead of a mount, they should get an animal companion (like the ranger/druid).

I was thinking that they should retain most paladin abilities (well, tweaked for Chaos instead of Law) and remove some of the strictures.... Maybe some ranger abilities.

Semi-related question: For this character I need some kind of ability to maintain dexterity in Banded Mail or Half-Plate... Should I just get magical armor, or would there be an ability for this?

Races of destiny has the elven paladin racial sub.

I don't like the idea of keeping dex in heavy armour. If the elves have good dex scores, then they would probably be wearing lighter armour to accommodate it.

Well theres the CG Paladin of Freedom in Unearthed Arcana and with the Champion of Corellon PrC from Races of the Wild, after 9th lvl in the PrC with mithiril full plate you'll have a max dex bonus of +6.

There are also iirc armor specialization feats to increase AC and decrese armor check penalty. Anyway, for a CG paladin you might want to at least browse the variant section of d20srd.org, so you can get a look at the paladin of freedom. I think a magical beast suits a paladin better than an animal companion, but with the animal cohort feat you can get both :D

So you don't want a PrC aye? Divine Champion would be perfect for any "Paladin" type of elf warrior/cleric.

As far as an animal companion... Why not go with a Cooshie? It's an elven dog that I must admit, is very, very cool. Just treat it as a Paladin's mount.

And promoting chaos seems like something a follower of the elven god Erevan Ilesere would seek to do, not a Paladin/champion of the elven people in general.

Now if you'd like to promote chaos as an elf... try a Rogue/ Cleric/ Divine Disciple/ Divine Seeker of Erevan Ilesere!

Just remember one thing... D&D is YOUR game and you should play it however you deem fit. Heck, you could be a Gnome Cleric/ Paladin of Asmodeus if you really wanted to, lol.

Wow, GEV, you REALLY do love Erevan dont you. You reference him in just about everyone of your posts.

And I can see a chaotic good paladin-type character of Corellon really easily, whereas Erevan is more about just plain chaos.

You have me there my friend. Erevan Ilesere is by far my favorite deity in the multiverse!! He just reminds me of a deity I would follow myself if he actually existed in the real world. And he's wicked underrated as far as divine powers go. Erevan has pranked, tricked and made a fool of almost every deity he comes across and has never been caught or been bested once!! Some of his tricks are deadly, and some are light hearted. One of the rare gods who have escaped everything ever thrown at him.

I think the Trickster archetype is way too often praised and looked at upon fawningly among society nowadays. I'm an Odin man over a Loke one myself, any day. If I ignore someone or do not react in an angry/shamed way when someone tricks me, it's my choice to do so, and I'm not sure how that makes the trickster the 'winner.' I don't mind trickery if it actually serves a purpose, but all too often it doesn't seem to.

I think besting a trickster is not acknowledging him, same as goes for ignoring a child who keeps poking you. Granting them attention is what truly makes them succeed in their efforts to aggravate you.

Yeah, from what it sounds like, I want a modified Paladin of Freedom. Going to have to look that up... basically (backstory time!) the aim of this class is to provide a wandering elven defender...

The Moon Knight is an Elven warrior who loosely fits into the chain of command of the Elven army (kind of like a commissar for all you 40k nuts)... they sometimes work as officers, and they sometimes wander the land, defending elves wherever they go. Basically they fight to keep the elven way alive, of letting elves live free and lively and all of that fluffy crap. They can inspire their comrades to greater valour (like a paladin, though I'm seriously considering not granting them the ability to cast spells a la the variant paladin in the PH (Or maybe the DM Guide, I forgot) and instead giving him a class ability to give more dexterity in armor). This particular character is one of the aforementioned "wanderers" who travels Abeir-Toril to protect the elven way of life and get some l33t l00t while he's at it.

If it was a PrC, it would be a cross between a paladin(or)fighter and a ranger. That's what I was going for in Animal Companion over a mount. For example, my particular character picked a hawk/falcon/eagle thing for a companion to scout and carry messages for him (DM was being nice, he granted me a magical one that speaks Elvish telepathically, it's good for RP purposes since I'm really not going to be using her in combat anyway unless all my weapons melted, my comrades are dead, and I am physically incapacitated... in that case, claw the fragger's eyes out, you damn useless bird!) instead of fight or ride. I mean, I guess it could work both ways (you choose one or the other?) if you wanted a horse, but I don't so I don't care at the moment.

Excuse my noobishness, I'm not on here much and I don't play D&D often enough for my liking, so if I cross some rule, don't get mad at me...

On a side note, the first ending song to Claymore (Danzai no Hana ~Guilty Sky~ by Kosaka Riyu) is really good. I think I'm going to play it during some random campaign.

That actually fits the Bladesinger's duties nearly to a T. :)

Yes! They're like bladesingers, except I've pretty much set on taking magic away from them and making them more ranger-like. They're kind of like bladesingers in that they fit in loosely (nods to GothicDan ^.^), but they're more inspirational like Paladins (hah, like commissars). They inspire their fellow elves to greater glory with their mighty charisma... Stuff like that.

Maybe I should make this a PrC... but for RP purposes, I need to start it out like this at level 1... curses!

If you like the bladesinger type style, you could modify the bladesinger PrC on the Elven Netbook page to cast divine spells instead of arcane spells. True, GD and others might cry blasphemy, but it's still an idea and might work well with your whole theme. You could even fiddle with some of the abilities so you could continue along with the special mount ability or some such. Just some thoughts.

I'm not sure why I'd cry blasphemy. Remember, I don't like stasis for its own sake. I've professed numerous times that among the Tel'Quessir, the boundaries between Arcane and Divine magic seem especially blurred. Corellon, their primary god, is largely a deity of Arcane magic. The High Mages hold an almost religious place among the people, and share a special connection to Corellon - and Priests of the Seldarine are capable of casting High Magic, too.

Elves live and breathe magic. Ultimately, the only difference between Arcane and Divine is the latter is granted to you specifically by a deity. The fact that the Seldarine are all so closely linked with more general magic portfolios (High Magic, Air and Weather Magic, Enchantment, Illusion, etc.) shows that such a distinction among the Elves is purely artificial.

I'd see no problem with slightly altering the Bladesinger spell list to allow some Divine spells. Remember, Bladesingers are Wizards, and Wizards are ultimately capable of researching anything they want. More religious Bladesingers who were attached to specific clergies or churches would obviously find it suitable to channel both Arcane and Divine magic suitable to their patron/s.

See, I didn't know if the whole divine aspect fit well with the bladesinger class. With most things elven, I usually refer to you. :)

So, you could change the prereqs to: Ability to cast 1st level divine spells and go on from there.

I think it'd be neat to mesh together appropriate Arcane and Divine spells into a new PrC that effectively acted as the holy Bladesingers dedicated to Tethrin (is that the bladesinger deity? I always forget) and Corellon... Sort of like the spell-list of the Knight of the Weave PrC.

They could have a sort of Cleric/Fighter/Wizard base - ability to cast 1st level Arcane and Divine Spells, and a BAB of +3 or something. So you could go Cleric 1/Wizard 1/Fighter 3/'Sacred Blade' 1-10, kinda' thing.

Wow Dan, that's a wicked idea. I'm going to use that in my home game... very similar in outlook to a Weave Knight but with protecting the Elven way of life as a primary objective... very cool.

Glad you like it. :) It makes sense, since almost all of the Seldarine ARE deities of magic.

I have a custom base class that's a combination (sortof) of the Savant from Dungeon Compendium and the Bladesinger PrCs (both).

No elven deity flavor to it, just an expansion of the PrC to be a base class and include divine magical ability. Had a PC in my last campaign that wanted to be a sort of missionary of the bladesingers and deliver the message of bladesong to all of the elven race.

It doesn't really fit what you're looking for, but if you're interested I can post it

Might want to add prereq that you'd have to be a sun, moon, or wood elf to become one, even maybe a region prereq like Evereska, Evermeet, Elven Court. Also, some prereq feats would balance the class out well. I really like this idea, any chance it might make it to the Book of Elves Dan?

It might if I find the time to stat it. I lost about 70 pages of work I was doing for it when my laptop crashed.

:weep: Man that sucks. Can't you do some wizard thingy and fix it? I'd try and help, but I don't think laying on hands would do anything.

Well, once I get back to school at the end of this month, I may be able to get some Technomage cohorts to cast some spells and fix the system. ;) That way I can continue on with my work on Sharlarion/Aryvandaar and all associated mechanics.
