playable Races??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-24-07, 03:53 PM There are a few races i was wondering about. One of my pc's asked to be a doppleganger, and i said that that was not aloud? Was i right? I also had a problem with somebody who wanted to be a half-genasi. Is this allowed? And just out of interest, when your half something, do you have to be half human, or do you pick both halves?:help:

That said--
Dopplegangers are 4hd and 4la, making them (without any classes) 8th level PCs
Half-Genasi? I'm unfamiliar with this in published material, especially since the Genasi is already a halfbreed.
Normal half-breeds are a specific mix, creating another "mix" would end up with a different race.

05-25-07, 01:32 AM Ya' know, 1/2 Genasi seems like a crude attempt to get around some limitation of the race or to simply put a human in a funny monkey suit and on that note, you could stuff a doppelganger into a funny monkey suit and use the changeling race from Ebberon to avoid the heavy hit to ECL.

Changelings, who are a breeding true race from the unions of humans and doppleganger, fit the bell to a point. They are in Race of Eberrron and Eberron Campign Setting book. (and they are not just a set of stats, but a race with an often quite alien mindset - their concept of identity clash with the humans's at times....)

Half-genasi are a bit ridiculous to be frank.... you are already not wholy human as a genasi.. an half-genasi would be an human mostly,w ith perhaps curious cosmetic notes.

05-25-07, 03:05 AM The changeling can also be found in Monster Manual III. As a humanoid with no level adjustement, it can easily fit in a 1st-level game while keeping the flavor (but not the powers) of a doppelganger.

As for the half-genasi, there is no such thing in the rules. A genasi is already mor ehuman than anything, and only has a level adjustment of +1. Reducing it any further would just make a simple human. Of course, you could have a character who looks like a human with a few slight genasi traits, say one of his parents was a genasi, and simply use the stats for a human from the PHB.
