Can anyone honestly say they've used a purple worm in any encounter. And if so, one that is vital to the campaign? I've just started DMing and i think that my choice is an interesting one. But I still think that the PCs will enjoy the battle. Also, fell free to name any other encounter that you feel was a little bit odd.

I used a purple worm once. A group of adventurers fled into ones lair and one got swallowed. Instead of being killed inside he found some item while his companions beat on the purple worm on the outside.

Never used a purple work, but I enjoyed the encounter with a rhemorazz (sp?) that my PCs had once, cause they totally freaked out when it pounced on them. They had walked right by it w/o noticing it.

Also, I killed 2 people of a 6 person party (and a 3rd got left unconscious when the Cleric did a Word of Recall) with one Nyth. Wizard led off the fight with a fireball, and when the creature split, he yelled to the group, "look out, there's more hiding invisible" *laughs uncontrollably*

It's actually a fairly common concept when dealing with "Swallow Whole" creatures to have fun stuff found inside them....in theory that's where some of the treasure is, so place some of it in there that can be useful to a swallowed PC....just to make a few die rolls not spell major disaster.

purple worms are a classic D&D monster... my most recent purple worm encounter was actually a purple worm zombie under the direction of a particularly nasty Alhoon

I have fought a purple worm as a PC, but have not used one as a DM.

I enjoyed the battle. I got swollowed, but since I had decent DR and a light weapon, I actually felt safer inside it than out.

I had a memorable run-in with a Purple Worm once. We were only 5th/6th level then. A young PW entered our tent from below and attacked my... foot. It was barely 20 centimeters long yet. The DM really had fun describing how the earth inside the tent erupted and spewed forth a purplish-black worm with dripping fangs and a tail spike that immediately lashed out at me!
:mymy:

Only then did he drop the information on its size.

A creative interpretation of cleave's 'deal enough damage to down an opponent' + swallow whole can be fun.

I remember the DM stuck me in maze made of stone and steel with sand floors. The purple worm couldn't burrow whatsoever so it had to slide through the cramped tunnels as it chased our characters down.

Actually my party was high enough level that I threw 3 of them at them (they were in chult) the whole swallow whole thing is a pain for any party since they have such a high grapple, and then when the figher says they're cutting their way out with the greatsword you can say "no" since its not a light weapon :P

I have DMed a purple worm that was causing a keep to collapse due to the tunneling that was occurring below.

- I found that once the fighter was effected by a freedom of movement spell (+ having a heroes feast earlier that day) it made the threat considerably less than expected.

- Another interesting viewpoint is the "Dune-esque" concept of opponents riding a purple worm,

- or even, if i recall, a mindflayer technique of growing a large clear walled cyst within the worms mouth and sitting within it, controlling the worms movement...somehow.

How about a purpleworm/mindflayer crossbreed?

It wouldn't be able to use psionics because it would still be pretty stupid, but those tentacles around the mouth would look awesome (plus, the PCs could find it sucking out a Titans brain or something). :D

thanks dielzen. i appreciate it. In my current campaign (we havent gotten together in a while due to some problems with one of our group members), the PCs go to an evacuated village to fight off a purple worm that was sealed away by a great wizard many years ago. he has been unleashed, but the PCs dont know that it is because the deceased wizard's arch-nemesis has broken the seal that holds him. i just started reading dune. ppl actually ride those giant worms?!?! i can think of none other than the Fremen that would know the planet well enough to tame the beasts! but dont spoil it for me! im a sucker for sci-fi!

Dont worry its been used many times. Example: The Cresent blade was found in the belly of a worm in War of the Spider Queen.

We've also fought a purple worm in rapanathuk campaign book. Its a good long dungeon crawler, I'd check it out if I were you.
