Hey people, I don't have my books with me at the moment and I was wondering what the difference is between class abilities of the Raumathari battlemage and the Spellsword PRC's. I know they both have pretty much the same abilities in most aspects, but what the exact particulars are I can't remember. Can anyone please tell me (besides fluff) what is similar and what is different between the two PRC's??

Lets see...

Raumathari Battlemage- 10 level class
*) Increased caster level for all levels but 5th.
*) Sword Focus lets them substitute a particular sword for a lot material components under 50gp value when used as a focus, also get +1 to their caster level with spells cast with the sword as a focus.
*) Channel Spell lets them cast a spell through their sword as a free action, up to 4th level and 4 times per day at 9th level.
*) Battle Spell lets them apply level-dependant metamagic effects to their spells without increasing casting times, up to 6 times per day at 10th level.
*) They get a +1 to save DCs when using their sword focus at 5th level.

Spellsword- 10 level class
*) Increased caster level at odd numbered levels for 1/2 CL progression.
*) Ignore Spell Failure (from armor obviously) increases as they progress to a maximum of 30% at 9th level.
*) Bonus metamagic or fighter feat at 2nd level
*) Channel Spell up to 5 times per day at 8th level, at 10th level they can channel two spells into their melee weapon, which takes up 2 daily uses.

Hope that helps. :)

Wow, I had forgotten how powerful the Raumathari battlemage is. Either Spellsword is under powered, or Raumathari is simply too powerful. What's your opinion Stigger?

Spellsword is underpowered as far as I'm concerned, but I'm always going to say that about a 1/2 caster progression PrC, so... ;)

I don't mind half caster level if the abilities are good enough to level the PRC out. I always thought that Raumathari battlemage was the realms version of Spellsword, but just pumped up.

half caster bugs me for some reason. Although honestly, the ability to ignore spell failure for armor is a very compelling reason to go with a spellsword.

nah the battlemage is the realms version of the EK, just better off.

imo the spellsword's ability to ignore the asf isnt all that worth it,even if you can walkaround in mythral full plate.

What is the difference in BAB between the two? are they the same?

the EK has full bab and the RBM has 3/4 bab....

RBM requires
exotic weapon profiency weaponfocus bastard, combat casting and any one meta magic feat.

EK requires must be able to cast lvl 3 spells and be proficient in all melee weapons.

The ruamathari gets 'good' BAB if I recall correctly. Its alo my favortie dndn PRC of all time. :)

The sweet thing about the RB is the metamagic feats they get; they don't miss much by foregoing wizard levels. Channel spell is also wicked. :D

Spellsword uses a Figher BAB progression, RBM uses a Cleric BAB progression.

What's the highest spell level the SS can cast through her weapon?

Just says any spell that they can cast, so presumably there's no limit on the level. Could have been errata that said otherwise though, never looked at it though as its never come up for me.

That's right, I forgot that you can cast any spell level through the sword you want as long as you are high enough level and know the spell. That's pretty powerful. Thanks!

No problem. Never actually considered just how powerful Spellswords were... food for thought that one.

The abilities for RBM are much better, but being able to cast spells of any level through your sword makes the Spellsword a mighty opponent.

That was my general assessment as well actually. Never really considered the Spellsword as all that attractive until today was my point there.

It's a big difference from the 3ED Spellsword in Tome and Blood.

The only bad thing about the good ol' Raumathari battlemage is its rather sad HD. (i.e. a d4)*. So yah, you better have a lotta mage armors in your level 1 slots. But still one of the best, if not the best prc's, right up there with archmage.

*no wonder the RBm shows a troll in the class entry. That regen can be useful eh, when the goin' gets tuff.

Oh and as for the spellsword, its cooler than a fighter, but still weak. It doesn't matter how cool its channel spell is when the highest level spell you can cast is 4 or so.

So if you gotta go, go for the RBM, the Fearsome Evokers of Old Raumathar!

I agree, just wish it was a more generic PRC for use in any region.

Nothing says you can't make it such really... beyond your DM anyway.

yeah you could say that Raumathari is nothing more than a faerunwide guild.

you could mind you make the SS and RBM a bit more off by adding the 5 lvls of Abjurant Champion
