| Nirvana2407-13-07, 06:42 PM | On wikipedia, they have listed a couple of elven subraces that exist in the Forgotten Realms that I haven't even heard of. Lythari, Snow Elves, and Star Elves. What source books have more information on these three? I read the basic description, but would like more in depth detail... And why were these not mentioned in the Races of Faerun book? |
| Mad Mage07-13-07, 07:34 PM | Star Elves are featured in Unapproachable East. My best guess to their appearance in there (instead of RoF) was due to the following 1) Page limitation. Can only put so much in one book. 2) Association with the Yuirwood, which is part of UE. 3) Were not developed until the release of said book. Snow Elves are from the Core D&D sourcebook Frostburn. Whether they exist in Faerun or not is unknown. Lythari are actually featured in Races of Faerun in the Lycanthropes section of the Other Races chapter. Remember, you can only develop so much material (and feature it in one sourcebook) at once. Making books costs money for developers. Also, some ideas tend to spring up at different times for whatever reason. |

So the first was a hint, but the second sort of confirms them... somewhere. |

| Old Sage07-14-07, 04:34 AM | Lythari were included in Races of Faerūn -- see pg. 146. Most of the other lythari sources include Monsters of Faerūn, Elves of Evermeet, Elaine's novels and some of her compiled replies made over at Candlekeep. The Monstrous Compendium Annual Vol. 4 is also useful, as is 2e's Demihumans of the Realms. The star elves are new editions to FR -- notably detailed in Unapproachable East. However, a star elf did exist in FR fiction before the release of UE -- but we didn't have the information to make that definition. Elaine Cunningham featured a star elf, named Sharlarra, in her novel Windwalker. She explains:- "First, I'm a little puzzled by the comments that star elves were "finally" recognized in a novel, as this subrace was introduced in a fairly recent game product. Second, I did not openly state that Sharlarra was a star elf because this game product had not yet been released when I was writing Windwalker. I obtained a copy of the manuscript from WotC and read it for continuity, and also for ways to tie the novel more closely with the new lore. Because of the timing, I was trying to avoid NDA restrictions, not to mention territorial issues--I don't imagine game designers would be pleased to see their new creations unveiled elsewhere. A small matter of professional courtesy. But I had no doubt that Sharlarra would be recognized for what she is. I've fielded quite a few questions about her race, some on the WotC message boards and some in email, and quite a few people made the connection without any trouble." See The Twilight Tomb adventure module also for more on star elves. |
