In the 'Faith and Pantheons' book there is a PrC called the Techsmith, and his first ability is to create a construct companion called Gondsman. That construct has intelligence (although very low) so therefore as skills and feats. But what about weapon and armor proficiencies? Usually, monster manuals either list to proficiencies or state that monsters are proficient with whatever equipement they have in their description. So what about the Gondsman, because the text in the PrC description doesn't say anything on the topic (unless I once went over it to quickly). Does it have a general description in some of the FR's Monster Manual, or, if not, do you use the sample Gondsman from the same book to figure out proficiencies? Or is it simply up to the DM?

This question has always been a bit fuzzy, and I don't think it has ever been properly answered.

There is a fully statted sample Gondsman in Waterdeep, also seen here:

Crunch is armed with a greataxe and wears a chain shirt, and the stats indicate that he is proficient with both, with no need for feats or class levels to provide this.

The line "can use any equipment appropriate for its size" might indicate that it has proficiency in whatever you choose give it, which may include exotic weapons.

Otherwise, it might just be the proficiencies of the standard fighting classes: simple and martial weapons, light through to heavy armours, bucklers, light and heavy shields. (Ie not include exotics and tower shields.)

Yeah, it makes perfect sense. I guess it's better not to give free exotic weapon profeciencies, but the standard fighting profeciencies is a sound idea. Thanks.

I agree with the weapons aspect, but not with the armor. Under the construct racial traits it states that constructs are proficient with all weapons listed in their description but not with armor. The Gond may poses the ability to use armor but I'd substitute 2 of its lvl up abilities for the proficency feat. Considering armor isn't a "tool."
