I'm planning to use the terrasque in my next FR campaign (in a sort of Godzilla fashion, or more like Lavos from Chrono Trigger), and I was just wondering if the terrasque has ever shown up in any official FR material, like sourcebooks, articles on Wizards.com or in the novels. I plan on having this particular terrasque fall from the sky and crash like a meteor and I was just wondering what, if any, experiance Faerun has with these mighty [silly] creatures.

Any info would be great, thanks!

The Tarrasque was in "As The Mighty Are Fallen," a 2E Adventure. I also believe that it's said to currently be asleep somewhere - possibly under the Anauroch.

Combat
Godzilla attacks. You run or die.

Atomic Breath (Su): 1920-ft. line of atomic energy, dealing:

Disintigration: 320d6 damage (avg. 1120), or 40d6 (avg. 140) on a successful Fortitude save (DC 106)
Force damage: 160d4 force damage (avg. 400); Fortitude save for half damage (DC 106)
Heat damage: 160d6 fire damage (avg. 560); Fortitude save for half damage (DC 106)
Radiation: 2d12 (avg. 13) points of ability damage to strength, dexterity and constitution.
There is a 1d4-2 round delay between each use of this breath weapon. The save DCs are Constitution based.

Energy Pulse (Su): 480-ft. radius wave of atomic energy, dealing 40d20 force damage (Average 420). Fortitude save for half damage: DC 106.

Frightful Presence (Su): Godzilla can inspire terror by charging or attacking. Affected creatures must succeed on a DC 94 Will save or become shaken, remaining in that condition as long as they remain within sight of Godzilla. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Rend (Ex): Should Godzilla hit the same target with both claw attacks the target suffers a further 16d8+42 damage.

Stomp (Ex): Targets two size categories (or more) smaller than the Godzilla can be stomped into the ground for 16d8+42 damage.

Swallow Whole (Ex): Godzilla can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Huge or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 4d8+17 points of crushing damage plus 4d8+7 points of acid damage per round from Godzilla's digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 100 points of damage to the Godzilla's digestive tract (AC 25). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. Godzilla's gullet can hold 2 Huge, 8 Large, 32 Medium, 128 Small, or 512 Tiny or smaller creatures.

Tail Sweep (Ex): Godzilla’s tail sweep affects all targets within a semi-circular area.

...after absorbing the energy from Fire Rodan

Augmented Breath Weapon (Su): 1920-ft. line of atomic energy, dealing:

Disintigration: 640d6 damage (avg. 2240), or 80d6 (avg. 280) on a successful Fortitude save (DC 106)
Force damage: 320d4 force damage (avg. 800); Fortitude save for half damage (DC 106)
Heat damage: 320d6 fire damage (avg. 1020); Fortitude save for half damage (DC 106)
Radiation: 4d12 (avg. 26) points of ability damage to strength, dexterity and constitution.
There is a 1d4-2 round delay between each use of this breath weapon. The save DCs are Constitution based.

Tactics Round by Round
Godzilla ignores any opposition until first attacked (unless there is a history of enmity whereupon he issues the challenge by roaring and charges into battle).

Round 1: Full attack against targets within reach, if no targets are within reach then Godzilla charges into battle and then employs a full attack (Dire Charge). If no targets are within melee range (flying for instance), then Godzilla attacks with his ranged weaponry (see Round 2).

Round 2: Use breath weapon on single opponent, or use the energy pulse if facing multiple opponents.

Rounds 3 and 4: Repeat rounds 1 and 2 where appropriate.

Round 5: Should opposition still exist by this stage Godzilla employs his augmented breath weapon.

Godzilla can be diverted from his current path, unless facing a serious threat (one of his peers: another megasaur or perhaps a deity), and wanders off (in the direction of the nearest body of water) after being reduced to less than half hit points (3880 hp).

Well the Turrasque is an interesting creature there have been other threads on this board about it. As to introduction I remember most about him that its stated "when it comes to town the town moves" they meant this literly as nothing so far has ever killed one due to its means of death. Most spells deflect normal damage doesnt always apply it cant be sneak attacked etc etc etc.

I would only caution its use unless you really think your players are ready for this epic battle. Another choice if they do sucseed though is Dendar the night serpent discribed in Champions of Ruin.

Now, that's plain stupid :P
As for the question regarding the tarasque, sure, why not.
Tarasque is as good as any a highlvl foe, with deadly attacks and a mythical quality. Might make an interesting adventure for your bored epic adventurers.
Just keep in mind: there is only 1 tarasque. Once you "kill" it, tarasque is no more. Thus you could have only one FR campaign where you could kill the beast.
It's your choice, but if you do decide to give them the opportunity and they succeed, it means if/when you are one of the players on a FR campaign you lose the same opportunity. :D
You might do well to look up info on the tarasque(french) or tarascas(spanish)
on the internet.

I have some pretty solid ideas on how I want to use it, and I'm not worried about using it at a later point in this campaign world or anything. What I want to know is what has happened in the past when the terasque has assaulted Faerun. Namely when it happened, who defeated it, if it was defeated, where it might be sleeping, etc.

As to only having one, I'm actually having it crash to the earth after being summoned form space (like I said, think Godzilla movies and Chrono Trigger).

Well, Godzilla was awakened from the ocean, but..

That works great with established lore, oddly enough. (See my Tarrasque Planet comment!)

I remember the Monstrous Manual saying that the Tarrasque might have been created by the Elemental Princes of Evil. Was this ever confirmed in later sources? If not what are its origins (or the origins of the planet filled with them for that matter).

I don't think this has ever been mentioned again, even in the writeups of the Archomentals or in the Guide to the Inner Planes.

Are you sure it wasn't the Elder Elemental Evil?

If there is no established source material for how the Tarrasque got to Faerun you could always do it this way. When Karsus attempted to become the god of magic and the weave started to collapse a Rift opened allow this one very powerful and potent creature to sneak through of sorts. It wreaked havoc during those times but during such massive chaos and destruction who would notice a continent or so being obliterated by a hungry beast. When all was said and done and magic was "Stabilized" of sorts the Tarrasque lapsed into slumber awaiting the proper time to be active and feed..

Not perfect but sure can fit easily into most campaign worlds.
GothicDan

06-20-06, 04:16 AM
Karsus needed the gizzard (or was it heart?) of the Tarrasque to cast his Karsus's Avatar spell. That's one of the things you have to collect in the How the Mighty Are Fallen adventure.

So the Tarrasque has had to have been around for longer than Karsus.

It was part of the epidermis of the pituitary gland of the tarrasque. But yeah, the Tarrasque was around a very long time before that.

I don't know the name of the planet, as it was in a product I don't personally own... But I don't think it was really detailed.

I believe in older lore the legend was that it was created by just evil/dark/lost gods of destruction/apocalypse/etc.

There's nothing Elemental about the Tarrasque.

EDIT:

Ah, I was right.

From the 2E MM: "It is hoped that the tarrasque is a solitary creation, some hideous abomination unleashed by the dark arts or by elder, forgotten gods to punish all of nature."

So, 3E changed that to DEFINITELY is solitary (which is wrong) and they pegged down the gods as the Archomentals (which is very wrong, since they're not even gods).

In Candlekeep Compendium IV (http://www.candlekeep.com/compendium/) I made brief mention of the dark continent southwest of Faerūn. Before The Sundering (c.-24,000 DR) this land was ruled by Tarrasque and her landwyrm armies. Human inhabitants, ancestors of the Tabaxi and Eshowe tribes of Chult, named Tarrasque's realm Katashaka, the largest land empire ever known on Toril.

Tarrasque of that age was not the unintelligent terror she is today. She was the progeny of the deity Ubtao and the celestial seawurm Lotan. In the aftermath of The Sundering, Tarrasque was stranded on mainland Faerūn separated from Katashaka and her home. Soon after, Tarrasque is slain by an avatar of the yuan-ti god Sss`thasine`ss as she attempts to conquer Mhairshaulk. In his grief Ubtao attempts to resurrect his daughter, but she returns to Toril a mindless uncontrollable killing machine. Fortunately she remains dormant much of the time. When unleashed Tarrasque is a creature feared even by the mighty dragons. Even more alarming is that Tarrasque is immortal. She has been slain many times over the millennia but always returns to rampage once more.

I actually just finished reading about that, the planet is called Falx and is detailed quite a bit in the 2ed Spelljammer product "Practical Planetology" by Nigel Findley.

"While the true tarrasque is reputed to be unique, there are several hundred of these enormus monsters spread over the surface of Falx. (Some sages claim that this world is the home of the tarrasque, and that the unique creature is actually a single specimen transported through space for some reason. Other sages point out that there might be subtle differences between the Falx tarrasques and the terrestrial version. Space is large, after all, and the similarity might be just coincidence.)"

Tarrasque-hunting campaigns are always good if you feel that you want to "retire" a character.

The old gaming group I was in "ran into" one.....7 or 8 years ago (I think). We finally engaged the creature outside of Scornubel. Of the 7 characters who entered into the game, only one survived.

That old campaign was made especially difficult, by request. The characters had been played so much that they were becoming boring to continue on with. My priest of Gond got butchered!

Yeah, if you ever feel like throwing a "Retirement Party" for old, tired characters. Run a campaign that makes the players fight through all sorts of strong monsters, dangerous traps, & lurking spells. If they survive all that, let them go out in a blaze of glory with the Tarrasque. :)

People don't seem to really get what I'm going for here, so let me explain it a little better.

I'm not trying to kill off characters, or end a campaign, the entire campaign is going to revolve around the Terrasque after a point. Don't think "end game D&D" think "Godzilla, Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VII or X."

Karnath Fellcloak, the Red Hand of Death, is warring about in some as yet undetermined region of Faerun, and has learned of an ancient weapon that will help him conquer and lay waste, so he endevors to find the item needed for the ritual to activate it. He eventually gets the item and heads south to an ancient lizardfolk temple to perform the ritual. Instead of revealing some powerful weapon however, the ritual actually summons a Terrasque from space, which crashes into the earth like a meteor.

When the Terrasque wakes up, it begins rampaging, and it's up to the PCs to stop it. I'm thinking of heavily modifying it, even going so far as giving it some intelligence and much smaller minion type parasites or symbiotes, not unlike the "Sin Spawn" in FFX.

As to defeating the Terrasque, it'll probably show up in the campaign around level 10 or so I'm thinking, and the PCs will have to find a way to defeat it using their brains, while dealing with the destruction wrought by the beast. I don't expect or want them to go toe to toe with the thing.

The most recent (by Dale Reckoning) sighting of the Tarrasque (to the best of my knowledge) was in module H2 Mines of Bloodstone. I forget what year that took place, but I think it was something like 1356 or 1357 DR. Over the past 14 years, it may have moved somewhere else, but may be sleeping deep under the mines, healing from the epic-level adventurers that went through it.

The planet was Falx. The Venus-like surface was dominated by tarrasques, lizards, and steelback beetles, and mind flayers had absolute total control of the underdark, in cities of millions of mind flayers and their slaves. Falx is roughly the size of Neptune, with crushing gravity. (Source: Practical Planetology)

The actual system that Falx was contained in was never pinned down. The point of Practical Planetology was to have planets ready to use for unexplored spheres that the travellers might go to. Realmspace was detailed, and Falx was not one of the planets there (though one of the planets has a sizable halfling population, and another has a fair population of beholders).

The Tarrasque appeared in the Forgotten Realms comic. It was sleeping in a chamber somewhere relatively near Shadowdale, in mountains (never really specified where). A strange person in red robes and a ceremonial skull mask had found a staff that seemed to give him control over the beast, and went on a rampage killing dragons, and after the staff was damaged, I beleive that the Tarrasque went back into sleeping, and the strange robed figure with the anger management issue concerning dragons has never reappeared.

i have fought the tarask toe to toe and we were like 17th lvl it was a coll side mission just because we always thought that he was like the ultimate thing to kill. great fun and another side note we made armor from the hide you could probably male some cool weponry with it too. if you do make a cool dungeon based on like tarask underlings that would be cool maybe like arcanly twisted babies to be humanoid minions for an army to take over the world not just destruction of one town at a time. the babys could kind of be like draconians form the dragonlance books. i dont know how inteligent tarask is tho so he might not be able to lead an army but could be under the control of some lesser divine being

just some ideas i came up with

There's a considerable amount of posts over on the other forums (Monsters, CharOp, etc.) that discuss the various ways to defeat the Tarrasque. Keep in mind, it has a *HUGE* and quite severe Achilles Heel that can rather easily lead to its defeat in rather short order.

I imagine you allude to the Big T's inability to fly, paired with the apparent lack of ranged attack options... I hatched plans to kill or at least defeat the thing many many times. I think lots of potions of Fly and lots of good archers should have no real problem, as long as there's somebody casting Wish at the end. Also, a Solar would stand a good chance doing it alone, and you could probably Gate one in if the T is doing some real property damage. Flyby Attack and Imprisonment at will are a nice combo...

By they way, can the bugger burrow? I imagine a good old-fashioned pit trap might be a nice idea, too.

Too many players have all the inside info on how to kill a Tarrasque. Your PC will have likely NEVER EVER heard of it. They shouldn't know any weaknesses and therefore it should be an epic challenge of challenges.

I'd suggest the DM actually alter the creature so the players don't know it's Achilles heels

so many people foreswaring that a tarraque is a campaign ending, character-retiring event. and only a couple of people on about defeating one with a stick and tiny little furry animals.

hasn't anybody ever just fought and defeated one straight out without any special tricks. in 2ed i was part of a group of four characters: mine was a 23rd level wizard, also was a fighter, ranger, and priest of Narrat (unique god to our game). the group specifically outfitted to find and fight the beast as it ravaged several large cities and too many small villages.

it took nearly 300 combat rounds, and a week of daily play. in the end the fighter and cleric were both killed, but we defeated the tarrasque. my wizard delivered the final blow, which was a lightning bolt right into the mouth.
