Warforged introduced into the Realms [Archive] - Wizards Community

Looks like Grand History of the Realms (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4ex/20070911a) introduces Warforged as a race into the Realms. We had always speculated that warforged could easily be introduced into the Realms as Netherese, or Imaskari, or Raumathari constructs left over from some forgotten war.

Well, if you check out the preview page of the Grand History called "the Scouring of the Utter East (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/excerpts/GrandHistory/GrandHistory_Scouring.zip)" (page 95) it discusses how the peoples of the 5 kingdoms discovered mysterious ancient "bloodforges", which I presume are the equivalent of Eberron's soulforges, and which enabled the creation of armies of enchanted golems, scattered across the Utter East. The 5 kingdoms used those armies to war against each other until a 6th party intervened.

Nifty little story there, and a nice way to nestle the warforged into the Realms as a playable race in preparation for 4th edition. Heck, if a DM wanted to merge or transplant his Eberron campaign into the Realms, he could easily import anything from Eberron's 5 kingdoms into the Utter East of Faerūn. Not that a lot of people will want to do this, but it is an option, and a nice fit if one is so inclined.

You can read for yourself at this link here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/excerpts/GrandHistory/GrandHistory_Scouring.zip

Dude! They've been there for ten years! :D

They first appeared in the Blood & Magic PC game of 1997, then became canon, in the form seen in GHotR, in the novel Faces Of Deception, and not-so-canon in the Double Diamond Triangle Saga, both in 1998.

http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=867601

Five Kingdoms, golem warriors created on forges, artificers creating magical items and constructs, goblins as a friendly race... the Realms had them first!

I don't want to aguaros la fiesta as we say in Spanish, but I can only see Eberron's face in the name 'bloodforge' similar to 'soulforge'. That army of golems, evokes me a legion of mindless constructs, not warforged, but that's just only a personal opinion.
Gray Richardson

09-12-07, 08:30 PM
Well, you are correct that it doesn't call the golems "warforged", per se. And it doesn't say exactly whether they are mindless or of the more high-functioning, intelligent kind.

Nevertheless, I think what they are trying to do is create an organic location and backstory to insert warforged as a playable race into the Realms. It would make sense to try to find some existing place and lore on which to build things up to make their entrance. And I think they have struck on an admirable fit.

The Utter East is far enough away that it can explain why we haven't seen warforged in the Realms until recently. And with the scouring of the Utter East explanation, it could explain why they were wiped out for a time, or why the secret of their manufacture was re-buried up until now.

It also provides alternative home regions for warforged. They could be born from a bloodforge in the Utter East, or they could have been born of a bloodforge captured by Zakharan forces (are bloodforges portable?) or at the very least from warforge soldiers, turned slaves, that were captured by Zakharan forces during that period. So a warforged could be from the Utter East, or Zakhara, or any port where a Zakharan trader might dock.

They're called Basal Golems, though mainly because they're your base unit. You an regrow them in vats into higher, more useful units. These are probably intelligent, at least, according to the Double Diamond Triangle Saga.

i don't know for you, but Living Spells whispers 'FR' to me as much, if you think about it... Living 'artefacts' of the Time of Troubles, Neitheirill and so on?

Halaster has a few pet 'living Spells' in the Underhalls, so FR definately had them before Eberron (at least, history-wise).

In fact, they have been linked to Halaster's death and the new Spellplague, but that is about 50-75% conjecture, I think.

I like the idea of introducing a few Eberron goodies into FR; I picked up the Eberron setting cheap the other day and thought that Warforged were the sort of thing that ancient high-magic empires may have used to wage war, or perhaps could have been created by Gond. In a similar vein, I think that the Artificer is a good class and would be suited to Gond's followers, or urban gnomes in general. For most gnomes, I tend to use Beguilers (PHB2) rather than Bards.

Personally I think that should they choose to introduce warforged into the realms, they should do so in a manner that gives them a history similar to Cyrics inquisitors. I think that makes the idea of sentient constructs not only more plausible, but more appealing.

I think that is the future of D&D in a nutshell. They want to merge everything so "all rules are applicable everywhere".

The "In FR...", "In Eberron..", and even "In OA..." thing they have been doing with the MM's and other books will become the default format.

That is why both Unedermountain and Drow of the Underdark and even Races of Eberron were published setting-neutral.

I'm not saying I'm unhappy about that, since I always borrowed from other settings anyway. There is a lot of good in Eberron, so thats fine.

I just hope that everything doesn't get so 'washed-out' so as to become bland - one setting lookng just like all the rest...

Simplification and union do not make the things stupid - Shadowrun took that path toward magic and you still have the flavours like an hindu worshipper of Shiva or an hermetic mage of the Renaissance kind.

It is how I see it; ingame, in the game world, the characters are not touched at all.

How about the empire that fought with NARFELL. What is the perfect weapon against Demons, Warforged is the perfect weapon. Lost Empires of Faerun said there were alot of constructs left over hidden in vaults. Thats how I will be introducing warforged in my REALMS. Food for thought. What do you guys think?:)
Gray Richardson

09-15-07, 01:38 AM
The Raumathari were masters of constructs. They fought Narfell long ago. It is a perfectly respectable way to introduce Warforged into the Realms.

In fact, we don't know who built the bloodforges (as far as I know). They were left over from some ancient war. They could easily have been created by Raumathar.
MarkusTay63

09-15-07, 02:06 AM
They seem to pre-date many of the cultures of the Ue, so they are probably MUCH older then that.

However, I could see them being put to use against Imaskar or even Raumanthar, and either one of those Civilizations creating Warforged in retaliation. Kind of like what happens in the RW with military escalation - the Five Kingdoms have their Basal Golems (created by the Bloodforges), and one of the magical empires builds a better, smarter living golem, that doesn't need someone controlling it and being able to operate independently.

I just remembered a discussion I had awhile back with a designer, about Raumathari 'constructs' and the ability to absorb a creature's 'lifeforce'... I wonder.... :thinks:
18DELTA

Yes the raumanthari. Maybe in the final battle with Narfell. The dead raumanthari battle mages animated a batch of warforged, yet were kept in stasis untill the SPELLPLAGUE. When the weave goes kaput they are released? I may just have to do this in a REALMS game;)

Why exactly do warforged need to be retconned into a Realms race? They're Eberronian not Realmsian. It is theorized that warforged will be made a core race in 4th edition. If it is a core race, available to all players in any campaign setting, then you would need to find a way to make them available in the Realms.

This is just speculation, but if that was indeed their intent, then I think they found a nice way to fit the Warforged in. The explanation builds on established Realms lore, fits organically into the setting and explains also why warforged are rare and have not been seen in Faerūn until now.

If 4th edition plans to advance the timeline a number of years, it gives the warforged time to proliferate and spread outwards from the Utter East (and/or from Zakhara) into Faerūn proper so that they can be common enough to be adventurers and NPC's.
Lord Karsus

09-17-07, 01:30 PM
-I have nothing specifically against Warforged (Don't know the first ting about them), but I don't think that there is any real reason to 'port them into the setting as a whole. One or two stray ones? Sure, that's cool.
ShadezofDis

09-17-07, 02:58 PM
I think it is a pretty good way to introduce them (the warforged). I just don't like them as a race so I won't really have them in my Realms, though I would allow a player to play one, so long as they came up with a quality backstory and played like they were from Eberron.

That's one of my biggest gripes about the whole "We need to find a place for these beings to come from!" trend (which may or may not be real), they DO come from a place, and it's a place that you can get to the Realms from. Back in the day, when I was in some Planescape games, I played characters from Athas, Faerun and even one from DL, some had been in the Planes long enough to know some dark and have a faction, others didn't, but it's SO FRIGGIN EASY to port something from world X to world Y if that's what you'd like.

I just don't want to see some "forgotten land of the warforged" popping up in my FR (to have a supplement made about it when I'd much rather see the Vilhon Reach retouched upon, the Boarder Kingdoms finished up, Calimshan retouched, Amn and Tethyr retouched, the Moonsea actually done, Cormyr redone, ect ect ect).

However, it was an entertaining little story. :)

A spaceship crashes into the planet. Robots walk out. They are either really annoying or speak in bleeps and bloops. They bear swords and smokepowder muskets easily. They have a *natural* affinity with other machines. They even work as translators. Humans saw these selfthinking golems and enslaved them. They, once proud, violent warforged, became lowly, housekeeping droids. George Lucas sent a camera team over as quickly as possible. The camera team landed and was burned at the stake for witchcraft. But they cameras and boomsticks stayed. They weighed more than a duck, meaning they're not made of wood, and therefore not witches.

O man, a friend of mine so called this. Like the 3rd day 4th edition was announced he called warforged in Forgotten Realms. I can see living spells there though. Ofcourse, Realms has anything first if they retcon it in there somewhere.

Its a sign of the end of days. Well, atleast if they're running around everywhere. I hate those silly contraptions. If they're running around everywhere in 4th Edition Forgotten Realms I'm going to make a druid who grows rust monsters and releases them into the wilds near their civilizations just to keep them in check.

When I added warforged into my campaign, I gave this description to my players as to how they came about Faerun and Toril itself....

The first warforged were created by Netherese at the height of they're empire. Though they didn't look like the warforged currently on Toril today, they were very simular. The conclaves created them for defense and shock troops against other warring enclaves, but because magic destroyed them as easily as normal fodder, there was really no point in making more. As time went, they put them away in storage. There, deep with the conclaves floating cities they remained. When Netheril fell from power in -339 DR, so too did the warforged race. A thousand years later, the race would once again grace Toril's soil when a Spell-Jammer starship crash landed off the coast of Lantan. Believing it was a gift from Gond, the Lantanese studied the ship and the remains of the crew and devised a way to create more. Once production started, they came to understand they're mistake. The warforged were sentient beings, not mindless robots and the first hundred or so completed warforged led a revolt which led to half of their numbers dead and twice that of the Lantanese. Driven into the sea, they swam (since warforged need no air or sleep) and continued until they came to a remote island west of Lantan and Chult called Trident. The island has three large volcanic mountains that jut up into the blue sky with a distinct pattern resembling it's namesake. Since then, they've survived in relative safety and peace. Using the island's natural barriers to turn away the most curious of ships, they've kept mostly to themselves, afraid of how Faerun's populace would react to them. For a few, this life of mediocrity is what pushes them away and in search of a life of adventure.

It would make the most sense if they were one of the 'things' locked away in the Imaskari arsenal (The Palace of the Purple Emperor).

Look at it this way - if they become a core race, there needs to be a reason why an unknown race is suddenly appearing all over the place. I figure an army of about 10,000 or so of these things was tucked away somewhere in stasis, but the Imaskari never got a chance to use them (like everything else in their armory). Spoiler Alert from Darkvision -
Considering the recent return of the Imaskari to the surface to rebuild their empire, it is entirely likely that they will be opening up many of those vaults and filling the Realms with whatever the designers have planned.
@Diffan - that would work, but only if they do the 'century thing' to us. Otherwise, there really isn't enough time for something to go from prototype to full-blown race. There needs to be thousands of these things available when 4e is released.

The Golems of the Utter East, and their role in warfare between the Five Kingdoms, have been present in the Realms since 1997, long before Warforged were ever a twinkle in Keith Baker's eye.

There is no new history or lore here to suggest that Eberronian Warforged will appear in the Realms.

How long before someone invents the Lightning Rail to Kara-tur ...Actually, I installed a Dwarven Railroad quite some time ago, but its not magically powered like the Lightening Rail. Although it is semi-supernatural in nature - it uses Ghost Rock, a coal-like substance from the Deadlands campaign setting. It ran from Sembia to Waterdeep... in that campaign.

-AGHotR makes no mention of the Deep Imaskari returning to the surface, as Ususi eluded to. That means that:

A) They don't.
B) They do sometime after 1385 DRI asked BC over at CK, and he said the events of the book take place in 1374 DR, so they would not have happened after 1385.

Another thing to consider - designers have already said that what was in that extra decade in GHotR was a 'sneak peak', and actually quite a bit more happened then what was put into that tome. When the 4e FRCS comes out, we will see many more entries added to those.

But its not new. Its an import from Eberron. I fail to grasp any cogent reason why Eberron can't have its own stuff and FR can't have its own stuff. Keep the warforged in Eberron. Besides, I just don't particularly like them
Gray Richardson

09-21-07, 09:12 AM
The Grand History does not actually call them warforged. But they were made on bloodforges so you could call them bloodforged, but the book doesn't actually call them that either.

The lore is not new, as other posters have pointed out, it comes from a trilogy of books based on an older Forgotten Realms computer game. The lore is 20 years old.

The lore is not an import from Eberron. It predates the Eberron setting by many, many years. Grand History of the Realms is just expanding on that lore.

These constructs have not been statted before in 3e (and have not been in the GHotR) so we don't really know actually if they are statted the same as warforged or not. So I guess the jury is still out on that one.

If warforged are introduced as a core race in 4e, then they will need to be a playable race in all settings. This lore opens the door to bring them into the Realms if the designers so choose. It also gives a good story for current DM's and players who want to use warforged in the Realms to use them in the Realms if they would like.

If you don't like warforged, or would prefer to restrict them to the Eberron setting, you can ignore the lore entirely, or make the determination that the bloodforged golems are ordinary constructs. Nothing in the GHotR says that you have to use the living constructs rules for these critters. It is completely silent on their actual stats.

Oddly enough, importing new races, with proper detailing in the lore (that doesn't include retconning or astoundingly improbable events), is something I really don't mind. Classes, though, I do, because human skills in anything do not spontaneously arise, fully formed and efficient, within a generation or even two or five or ten or fifteen or.. You get it. So far I have seen no valid reasons they would be included as a "core" race in the realms. The Netherese or Lantan BS doesn't jive as those were along the lines of Golems.
Also if they're so freakin rare then perhaps a rare NPC who stepped accidentally thru a Gate or multiversal rift....perhaps.

I don't mind the warforged in FR, even if they are my least favorite thing about Eberron. If they do it right - something along the lines like I suggested - then they would fit right into canon lore, and DMs would also have the option of excluding them if they want.

Figure if they came for the region of the Raurin or Utter East, then they needn't be 'all over' the Realms, and they become optional by leaving them on the fringes.

Like Samurai and Ninja, or even other areas like Zakhara and Maztica... they exist but no-one is forced to use them in their game. Try to remember that YOU own the setting, it does NOT own you. :)

They could be from Kara-Tur. I really think that Kara-Tur is going to merge with THE REALMS. It would be a good way of bring them into the setting, without changing to much of the lore that we know. The end of Grand History starts to mention alot about Kara-Tur. Yeah they can change lore from Kara-Tur easily. How long has it been since it got any support?;) :lightbulb :evillaugh :plotting: :w00t:

Warforged really don't suit Kara-Tur culture, although there are atleast two different armies of 'Terracotta Warrriors' mentioned. However, those are much more along the lines of either clay golems, or real fighters turned to stone.

Now, The Hordelands are another story entirely. We have both the Imaskari and the Raumathar, Artificers and known users of animatrons. Also, the Utter East, just below this region, has a history dealing with 'mechanical horrors', and of artifacts known as "Bloodforges".

Since there are references to similar constructs in all three cultures, I would place them in the middle and blame the whole shebang on Imaskar. ;)

Especially now that they have returned

I think they extended the contract for another year or half a year. I guess with all the 4E hubbub they just aren't ready to deal with yet another setting just yet. If we add the Dragonlance fans to the hordes of FR and Eberron fans already clamoring for blood, WotC might just have to spend money fortifying their HQ. That's the one thing they fear most, additional expenses.

-What are you talking about?

Apparently, campaigns settings, the vanilla onces at least, have to include Core stuff, I heard.

Well, I have news;

Dragonlance never had orcs. They where written out of the setting at star. And so, no half-orcs - a CORE race.

They where not readded, they won't i bet. Setting rules and local variations.

Like Dark Sun never had drow, a core (humanoid) monster race. Note that there was Gnomes in the distant past, but lo, they died. And never came back (albeit there could be a good plot for some return... mutants... dunno).

And mind you, they passed second edition, where you had much crossover stuff.

Won't change a lick. Especially since the Core is not Greyhawk, but a sort of mini-setting, a sort of 'demo' world who will not be linked at all with other worlds, but use basic, simplified stuff to show world-making and the rules in action both.

It is how it is.

NO OFFICIAL Warforged in the realms, unless there would be retconning and all (but a DM could find a good way to set them in, as shown by that thread who float around). Core =/= FR, NEVER did.

Do you mean that they will include warforged, but make them more 'Realmsian"? Then I would have to say "of course"...

We've always had our own distinctive names and spin for the various core races (Elven sub-races come to mind). I'm sure 4e Realms will have Mooon Elves and Gold Elves - but in name only. They will use the identical mechanics as Grey and High Elves from core. They are merging the mechanics, not the Flavor.

Ergo, we will not be getting Eberron Warforged, we will be getting Faerūnian Warforged (same crunch, different fluff).

It does make some sense, if you think about it - D20 is a generic system, so you should be able to apply the same rules to any setting variant. Halruan Skyships and Eberronese ones are totally different things, yet there is no reason why they can't work exactly the same way.

Contrary to popular belief, warforged are imminently suitable for Kara-Tur especially Kozakura and Wa.

They would be even more awesome if they were Huge, Gargantuan or even Colossal in size.

They would be exceptionally awesome if they had a hollow chamber in their head or chest where a man could observe, or direct combat, or maybe even use a wand, staff or other device to blast opponents.

And, of course, it would be ultra awesome if those opponents were Gargantuas, Krakentuas, or other giant warforged.

The Utter east, or the Raurin, or even something uncovered by Hubadai Kahan's people in the new nation of Yaļmmunahar - some lost Raumanthar relics - would be both appropriate and not so intrusive.

Warforged are a great race for a player who want's to try some new options, but do they really need to be in every D&D world? No, they don't.

But by placing them on the 'fringes' (see above), we have the option of bringing them in. It should always be left up to the DM and his players weather or not Warforged are right for their game.
Gray Richardson

09-27-07, 01:41 AM
Agreed!

Foolishknight, warforged don't have to be in your Realms. Heck, you don't even have to have elves, or gnomes or beguilers in your game if you don't want them. Use whatever elements you like. Eschew those you don't.

But certainly players or DM's should feel to free to have warforged in their Realms if they want them.

It is speculated (but not confirmed) that warforged will be a core race in 4e. If they are made into a core race, then yes, they will be a basic race open to any player. Of course that would necessitate them being available in WotC's flagship setting.

But have heart. There has been some discussion that warforged may not end up being a core race after all. If they are not a core race, then you can probably expect they will not be written about much (if at all) in FR books or game materials. However, the lore in Grand History of the Realms gives DM's and players the option to seamlessly incorporate warforged into the Realms if they do like the race and want to explore that opportunity. Because, after all, Grand History is just summarizing and expounding on lore that is 20 years old. Because, it turns out, the Realms have had warforged (or something awful darn like it) all along. IN fact the Realms had it first!

There's a possiblity that the first MM will have information on playing a few races, probably as an appendix. I doubt if there'll be as much as you'd find in the PHB, but enough to get by with.
MarkusTay63

09-27-07, 11:45 AM
Since you will be gaining levels in your race as well as class from now on, it has become much harder to create races in 4e. You basically have to create a 20-level class for EACH race, and then PLAYTEST it.

Expect MUCH brokeness and a new edition (4.5) in two years.

The concept is a good one, and WotC did not come up with it. Check out Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved. The difference is that HE did everything right, and did it first (although it does harken back to the ancient days of OD&D).

This is 4e we are talking about here, so all bets are off.

Are you trying to say that everything they are telling us (which really isn't much) is a lie?

It is a fact that they are playtesting Warforged right now. They are ONLY playtesting things that they want to put in the core rules release right now, which is only a few months off. If they do not make it into the first PH, they will more then likely wind up in PHB II.

Changelings on the other hand, are DEFINATELY going into the first PH, and WILL be part of FR, which is the same thing as core in the 4e universe.

I wish people would stop referencing the way the seperate settings used to work - those days are gone. Dry your little eyes and move on.

No one is going to force DMs to use stuff they do not want - it's still their choice... it ALWAYS was. If the designers are smart, they will write the 'oddball' stuff into the fringes, or on other continents all together. In that way, it will better facilate those groups that do not want to use those things.

Personally, I am embracing the new rules. I have always 'mixed it up', borrowing stuff from different worlds and setttings. Just like D20 did with the 3e, this will give us infinate possibilites to create the kind of world we want, hand-tailored to our needs.

Unfortunetly, it also spells the end of FR as we know it. :(

Once the new rules are out, I will decide weather to continue in the 'old' Realms, switch to a new setting (including 'new' realms), or create my own homebrew world (more then likely).

I will miss FR, but I won't stop playing the game. It's a brave new world, and I'm ready to leap from the cliffs of my comfort zone into the dark unknown.

Heya,

It is a fact that they are playtesting Warforged right now. They are ONLY playtesting things that they want to put in the core rules release right now, which is only a few months off. If they do not make it into the first PH, they will more then likely wind up in PHB II.

Changelings on the other hand, are DEFINATELY going into the first PH, and WILL be part of FR, which is the same thing as core in the 4e universe.

Changelings! Yay! :cheer: :cheer: :D There's certainly plenty of lore in the Realms that would support a background for Changelings to have existed for a long time, just as there's lore that might support Warforged. (I like Changelings, can you tell?)

However, there's one thing I think people are forgetting... What would happen to the Warforged when the Weave goes boom? I think someone's going to have to do some creative thinking to work them in, especially since magic won't work the way it used to on Toril - so magical items created before the destruction of the Weave might not work at all.

Edit: Markus, I'm also curious where you're getting this from. Could you provide links to pages where official people have said: Changelings are in, Warforged might be in, and that Core will be the same as the Realms?

09-29-07, 02:04 AM
To be honest, I can't remmber every site I've read official stuff on. Most of what I'm saying comes out of Gencon itself (the one ruleset for everyone). Also, I'm pretty certain that it was a definate that Changelings would be a core race from Gencon as well.

Most of the authors and designers have blogs now, where I've been reading a lot, and also right her at WotC there are many hints in various official comments.

If I wasn't sure about those particular facts, I would say they were conjecture.

What IS conjecture right now is that Warforged may make it into the Realms, based on the fact that they are playtesting them and all core rules apply to FR in 4e.

The latest response in the "Ask the Designer's" thread confirms that the stuff in the Design and Development column WILL BE canon in the coming Realms. So, since they are also talking about things like Elves (and GH gods being their gods), one can extrapolate from that that just about everything we are reading concerning 4e WILL be a part of the Realms somehow. There's really no getting away from it - the 'one rules for all' is one of their primary goals in 4e.

How they handle the unique setting races is yet to be seen, but I know someone somewhere hinted that we will see Changelings in the initial release of the PH.

And where did you get that bit about the Changelings? We only know about Tieflings in the PHB.And Tieflings will now be forced on Eberron as well - they have said as much.

If something is going into the PHB, then the expectation is it will be used, even common, in most settings.
Sure, some settings could rip out half of the PHB and not use it. But I doubt they will. So Athas has no gnomes? Suprise suprise, but all the other settings do.
This is not about two settings having warforged. This is about ALL the settings except two having them.
That spoils the game imo. It turns it from fantasy to weird fantasy. It's a Bad Idea.

Yes, but they weren't 'major players' as they are in the FR setting. The Eberron designers have said that they will be 'played up' in 4e.

More of this 'bringing all the settings closer together' mindset.

I'm hoping it won't be as bad as it sounds - just one huge washed-out mega-setting with different maps for each world.

Creating universal crunch while retaining the individual fluff of each setting is a monumental undertaking, and I wish them luck. If they can pull it off, so much the better.

Either way, the rules sound interesting, and I plan to use them.

Thats been out for awhile, but I forgot that it mentioned the Elemental Tempest.

So technically, that was the first hint of the new cosmology in FR.

Interesting.

Yeah, I remember seeing that article to. It was right after the BRAIN FART that happened, when 4E was announced. I saw it, then it was gone.

Actually my group just finished up a Campaign in the realms where I played a warforged Ftr - in Faerun via a Portal. He (?) was fun to play...a good fighting race. I find warforged much better than the "Drow outcast proving himself with his trusty katana" crap

I prefer oozes over golems in getting sentience. Stupid tin cans.

Well, with Chris Perkins recent blog entry, we can assume that FR WILL be getting Warforged if they appear in the 4e PHB.

FR is the same as Core, now.

No warforged in FR, I promise.I take that to mean that Rich is saying warforged will not be featured anywhere in FR materials, will not be characters in the novels, will not be seen in the background of sourcebooks, will not feature as NPC's and so on.

Basically, he is affirming that they aren't changing their current status quo on Warforged. It sounds like Warforged will still be a featured part of Eberron, and whether or not they are in the PHB or not, while players and DM's will have the freedom as always to use them in their home campaigns (or not, if they so choose) it sounds like WotC has no plans to support or mention Warforged with respect to the Realms materials.

But, what is cool is that, if a DM or player wanted to use them, there is now some lore you can adapt to give a good explanation for them if you like.

I can live with it. Hey its your game do what you want. We came up (meaning all that posted on this thread with constructive posts that is) with some good ideas. I may use the Rumathari angle myself after the 4E ECG comes out.:)

They could be the creation of "The Metal Mage". :D

Warforged are another type of golem, poppet, construct etc. I don't see the problem as long as they're very rare.
