Is there anywhere they are mentioned or written up? (2nd or 3rd edition is fine.)

A 'were-dragon' is basically what ignorant people and somewhat uninformed scribes called song dragons back in the previous editions. :)

Any source references?

That makes some sense....I guess Volo would be lumped in with that group no?

I'm sure that there are sages here and there, as well in the real Candlekeep (no, not the forum) that know what the song dragon/were-dragon connection really is, as well as wizards versed in Dragon Lore.

As for Volo, well, this is Volo we're talking about here. It's well known that if he does somehow get something right, he's guaranteed to gain the ire of anywhere from a dozen to a score of very powerful individuals, Elminster first and foremost.

For 3rd Edition, you can learn more about the song dragons from Monsters of Faerun, as well as Dragons of Faerun. As for the older sources, mayhaps some of the older sages will provide that for you?

Weredragons are a creation of Ed Greenwood himself and originally appeared in a 2E issue of Dragon magazine, wherein it was noted even then that they weren't actually were-creatures. When it came time to update them, they were renamed song dragons. In addition to the sources noted already, the Rage series of novels features a song dragon as one of the lead characters.

wouldn't a were dragon be more overkill than a hill giant wereboar?

Well if you mean Weredragons as in creatures afflicted with lycanthropy of a draconic strain, then no. Dragons are of the Dragon type and thus cannot be used in the lycanthrope template as it calls for an animal type form.

But a Were T-Rex Hill Giant probably would be.

There are no were-dragons in 3E, they were substituted with song dragons, but they aren't lycanthropes.

A WERE-T-Rex Hill Giant:confused: ?! Holy Reptiles, Batman:eek: ! That IS overkill! Great :lightbulb 4 my high-powered campaign. Yes, I do crazy things like this (AKA the "mad :evillaugh scientist" routine).

I think Greenwood had a were-dragon character in the book Elminister, The Making of a Mage. It's not game material, but dose give some fluff.

I'll check that out. Thanks.

Dragons of Faerun has a ditty on the Sisterhood of Essembra which pretty much confirms everything that's been said, dealing with my original source for the question.

You mean the malaugrym that was thought to be a yuan-ti masquerading as a human Magelord who took dragon form for a short time in the ending of the novel? :)

I don't recall a weredragon/song dragon in Elminster: The Making of a Mage. Try Elminster's Daughter.
