| The_Wrath_of_Talos09-27-07, 02:55 PM | Alright, why are werewolves so weak as a template in DND? In other RPGS such as Werewolf: The Forsaken they are the last thing anything wants to mess with. |
| johnkretzer09-27-07, 03:23 PM | Alright, why are werewolves so weak as a template in DND? In other RPGS such as Werewolf: The Forsaken they are the last thing anything wants to mess with. You really want a response? |
| Lord Karsus09-27-07, 06:48 PM | -'Cause Stone Cold said so? |
| SgtAnjay09-27-07, 08:16 PM | Alright, why are werewolves so buff in Werewolf: The Forsaken? In other RPGs like D&D they're much easier to deal with. :P |
| MerrikCale09-27-07, 09:16 PM | why does Mickey Mouse wear pants and no shirt but Donald Duck wear a shirt and no pants |
| GothicDan09-27-07, 10:33 PM | This question really makes no sense. Werewolves have been around for 30 years in D&D. Heck, even in Werewolf: The Apocalypse, they were at the middle of the food chain at best, with Vampires being above them, and Mages above them. I'd also suspect Mummies and Demons to be above them, too. |
| capnvan09-28-07, 06:27 AM | why does Mickey Mouse wear pants and no shirt but Donald Duck wear a shirt and no pants Part of the reason involves Donald having to register every time he moves and not being allowed within 1000 yards of a school anymore. |
| MarkusTay6309-28-07, 02:17 PM | But it doesn't explain why both Pluto and Goofy are dogs, yet Goofy OWNS Pluto... is there slavery in the Disney universe? Also, if a Lythari mated with a Werewolf, would it be a half-Elf wolf thingie? |
| Lord Karsus09-28-07, 03:30 PM | But it doesn't explain why both Pluto and Goofy are dogs, yet Goofy OWNS Pluto... is their slavery in the Disney universe? -Yes. See Song of the South. I believe that is what it's called, anyway. Also, if a Lythari mated with a Werewolf, would it be a half-Elf wolf thingie? -No. |
| MerrikCale09-28-07, 09:38 PM | -Yes. See Song of the South. I believe that is what it's called, anyway. That is what its called. The one movie that Disney, so far, has refused to release to DVD due to a somewhat racist view. A Mickey, not Goofy, owns Pluto |
| MarkusTay6309-28-07, 11:07 PM | That Rat! |
| Suin Bahhar09-30-07, 08:53 AM | oO Actually lycanthrops can be pretty powerfull in the right conditions (pitchblack nights, party asleep with the lycan in bed with a PC, the lycan being an important friend of a PC)... |
| Lord Karsus09-30-07, 11:04 PM | -Or a priest of Torm...Ugh, a bad campaign I was in once... |
| Green Elven Vampire10-01-07, 02:34 AM | I would say that the vampire and werewolf templates are pretty weak on their own. It's the classes and levels that make the werewolf or vampire. Hmmmm... a werewolf Bard! I wonder what songs would be sung? Personally, I'd be more frightened by a werewolf than a vampire in real life. The carnal fury of a werewolf would hold more horror in my eyes. |
| Suin Bahhar10-01-07, 08:14 AM | WoD Werewolves worked in packs, so they could be pretty brutal when they could corner their enemies. I would even think a stealthy werewolf with some good moonbased powers could take on a vampire by itself. (in D&D terms make a cleric werewolf) To make werewolves more scary look into the ravenloft. I prefer weretigers though. rawr. |
| GothicDan10-01-07, 12:13 PM | Werelions FTW. Simba were crazy in WoD. |
| MarkusTay6310-01-07, 02:38 PM | I use the Werewolf packs and Vampire clans from those games. They function like the Unseen - very covert and self-policing for the most part. I also use the Immortals from Highlander, and they are at odds with the vamps. I'm a $lut when it comes to settings... :D BTW, I think all of that fits rather well in FR, because FR is all about secret groups and societies working in the background, so it just adds another dynamic. Once we get Changelings in 4e, I will work them into the Werewolf lore as well. |
| GothicDan10-01-07, 07:05 PM | I wouldn't mind those, except for the Changelings. I was never a big fan of WoD Changelings to begin with, and the Changelings of WoD are basically the Fey/Sylvans of D&D - not actual Changelings at all. |
| The_Shaman10-02-07, 07:33 AM | Alright, why are werewolves so weak as a template in DND? In other RPGS such as Werewolf: The Forsaken they are the last thing anything wants to mess with. You might not believe this, but here's a small thing hidden somewhere in the PHB called "class levels." Those "level" thingies actually increase as a character gains experience, and give him/her more abilities. Weird, huh? Just as WoD vampires and werewolves aren't something all that special when they're just embraced/awakened, D&D werewolves - and to a degree, vamps - aren't all that tough without a few levels. Of course, they are quite something compared to ordinary people (who have 1-2 levels in a NPC class, usually), but with time and experience they can become much stronger . A werewolf warrior 1 isn't such a big deal, sure - but are you sure that you want to mess with a werewolf barbarian 5/warshaper 4/frenzied berserker? . Likewise for a vampire spawn aristocrat 2 and a VS rogue 6/assassin 4 (ok, that template is nearly unplayable, but still). WoD simply removes the level progression for a more ongoing improvement of abiltiies. |
| Suin Bahhar10-02-07, 08:18 AM | Actually one must realize that 5% of all encounters should make the whole party flee (be against overwhelming odds like 5level higher encounters). Dropping a werewolf with extra class levels so the party needs to outrun it, thats the most scary use you can get out of it. Most werewolves have extreme jump and climb scores so they are perfect moonlit chase machines, getting in your face everywhere. Scent snuffs out hiding. Really good against (invisible) mages with their guano, sulphur, wax and corpse scented attires (components are a *****). |
| Suin Bahhar10-02-07, 08:42 AM | I use tha Werewolf packs and Vampire clans from those games. They function like the Unseen - very covert and self-policing for the most part. Thats what I want to do as well. I loved the quasipolitical scheming amongst the clans of WoD garous and vamps. Ever played WoD Dark Ages? Those gamesessions are great and perfectly decadent without remorse. Less wimpy Veil or Masquerade... more vampirirc manipulation of the churches and crusades. Set around 1000 AD and the wars amongst the werewolf clans and the hunting of non werewolf shapeshifters by packs of 20 garou strong. In FR the garou also fight amongst themselves devided amongst their patron gods. Selune vs Malar vs Ubtao mostly. In my game Gwaroan Wyvernsbane (spelling), Selune, Sharess and Fenmaril appose Shar, Malar, Sebek and Set. Ubtao is more neutral in this shapeshifter war and is dealing with Sseth mostly at the moment. |
| MarkusTay6310-02-07, 03:10 PM | I've never gone so far as to flesh-out all the various sub-groups, but I know they are there and if I decide to have the PCs run into any of them, I will be sure to create all of the inter-species/inter-clan fighting and what-not. IMG, the Vampires themselves are more likely to wipe-out a new cell and destroy all traces of it - the last thing they want is to bring a 'holy war' down upon their heads. Same goes for the Lycanthropes... It's all good, and it all goes on in the background. I wouldn't mind those, except for the Changelings. I was never a big fan of WoD Changelings to begin with, and the Changelings of WoD are basically the Fey/Sylvans of D&D - not actual Changelings at all.I meant the Changelings from Eberron, not the WoD ones, sorry for the confusion. I want to see how they intend to introduce the Changelings officially into FR, and then use that as a springboard for my own ideas. Thats why all this talk of 4e 'Darkness' and what-not is just silly - the world always was as dark as the DM needed it to be. Imagine, designers telling Players how to play their games... thats just not D&D at all. :nonono: |
| jam1o110-02-07, 08:55 PM | This is probably a really noobish and obvious question, not to mention off topic, but what does WoD stand for |
| MerrikCale10-02-07, 08:57 PM | This is probably a really noobish and obvious question, not to mention off topic, but what does WoD stand for I believe its World of Darkness another RP game. |
| Suin Bahhar10-02-07, 09:24 PM | Basicly a roleplaying game of the modern age with added "Darkness" i.e. vampires in the big nighttime cities; werewolves opposing tech in the rural areas; mages controlling tech and things you cant imagine; changelings from a fey realm and ghosts tettering the shroud in a shadowy reflection of reality. It was intended for mature roleplaying. |
| Suin Bahhar10-10-07, 09:26 AM | One can add some more gods to the list of lycanthrope clanwar patron gods. Forces of light: Nobanion patron of big werecats Gwaeron Windstrom patron of werebears Selune patron of werewolves Sharess patron of smaller werecats and werefoxes Fenmaril Mestarin patron of werewolves and lythari Aarakocra pantheon patrons of wereravens Forces of darkness Shar patron of werebats Malar patron of werewolves Sebek patron of werecrocs Set patron of weresnakes Talona patron of wererats Garagos patron of beserker werewolves Beshaba patron of cursed lycans Neutral Ubtao patron of scaly or jungle lycans Silvanus patron of werewolves and werebears Various Animal Lords/Totems patron of most isolated natural lycans |
| GothicDan10-10-07, 02:04 PM | I'd split Nobanion and Sharess a little differently. Nobanion should be Lions and Tigers (almost the exact same feline, genetically), if you're not going to use a Weretiger god. Sharess should be leopards, jaguars, panthers, and maybe cheetahs if you want to stretch the theme, since those were the cats most associated with Bast. Also, no evil werefelines? Unpossible. |
| MarkusTay6310-10-07, 02:14 PM | What? No Thundercats and Mum-Ra? ;) I thought Monster Mythology listed all the were-gods. :thinks: (I can't find my copy ATM, and it's pi$$ing me off!) There is also Kiga, the predator, goddess of were-leopards (Zakhara). Ragarra is a crodile-headed goddess, who appears much ike a female aspect of Sebek, also from Zakhara. Her followers are crocodile-headed people called Segarrans. Her mate is a Hippo-headed guy named Shajar of the River, but since there are no were-hippos I suppose he has no place in this discussion. And, technically, the Hengeyokai worship the Celestial Bureaucracy, and their southern cousins, the Katanga, may also follow that pantheon or the Lords of Creation (Vedic). |
| Suin_Bahhar10-10-07, 04:40 PM | oO Dont jolt. Its me Suin Bahhar gleemaxified. I'd split Nobanion and Sharess a little differently. Sharess should be leopards, jaguars, panthers, and maybe cheetahs if you want to stretch the theme, since those were the cats most associated with Bast. Also, no evil werefelines? Unpossible. Aye thats what I had in mind when I made the distiction big and small werecats: pumas, tigers and lions with Nobanion; leopards, jaguars and panthers with Bastet/Sharess. Evil felines follow Shar in my lycanthropic clanwars. What? No Thundercats and Mum-Ra? I thought Monster Mythology listed all the were-gods. (I can't find my copy ATM, and it's pi$$ing me off!) There is also Kiga, the predator, goddess of were-leopards (Zakhara). Ragarra is a crodile-headed goddess, who appears much ike a female aspect of Sebek, also from Zakhara. Where would you put Kiga: light, neutral or dark? Shiva the Destroyer is evil? She would make a nice evil werecat diety (could you name me any appropriate others?). I think I'll use Ragarra it has a better ring to it. |
| Suin Bahhar10-10-07, 05:35 PM | Ah much better. Shiva and Indra strike me as good candidate patrongods for lycans, especially eastern types and werepanthers. Anyhow. The war is mostly fought in southern fearun in my campaign as malarites have essentially won the clanwars in the north. Good aligned and natural werewolves are hunted at every turn and most flee to southern lands with more worship and temples of Selune. Druids of good aligned nature dieties are known to seek out and help these poor souls too. The wars are pretty drawn out as lycantrophes have trouble hurting each other fatally without proper precoutions. A werewolf wearing too much silver loses its connection to his diety and the much needed healing powers. So most battles require carefull coordination of magic fang spells when in melee and expenditure of silvered ammo and moonbased spells at range. Where can one find copies of monster mythologies nowadays? |
| Storm_Silverhand10-10-07, 07:25 PM | Heya, BTW, I think all of that fits rather well in FR, because FR is all about secret groups and societies working in the background, so it just adds another dynamic. Once we get Changelings in 4e, I will work them into the Werewolf lore as well. Except Changelings are related to dopplegangers, not lycanthropes. Shifters, on the other hand, are supposedly descended from lycanthropes. You're not getting confused are you? |
| MarkusTay6310-11-07, 01:45 AM | Actually, I was. Shows you how up to speed I am on my Eberron material. ;) So yeah - I'll do Changelings AND Shfters... :plotting: |
| Storm_Silverhand10-11-07, 03:00 AM | Heya, Actually, I was. Shows you how up yo speed I am on my Eberron material. ;) I can kind of understand how you could make such a mistake. :) So yeah - I'll do Changelings AND Shfters... :plotting: I love changelings! I'll be quite glad if they do make it into the Realms. Shifters, on the other hand, I kind of feel uneasy about. For a number of reasons... They're mildly more acceptable to me than "vampire blooded" individuals, but it's still very difficult concept to get my mind around. (It's a curse, not genetics, for a start.) |
| Suin Bahhar10-11-07, 01:16 PM | I agree shifters delute the lycanthopy thing just as halfvampires do. Shifters pass on the curse to offspring right? A way of introducing them could be the mixing of a natural lycanthrope into the familiy several generation back. The "curse" usually skips some generations and emerges on heatheaded individuals in stressfull situations. |
| MarkusTay6310-11-07, 08:06 PM | How about when a human and a Lythari have a child? That would make them more Realmsian, and makes a little more sense. They could not possibly pass on their Lythari heritage to a half-Elf, so it would manifest in some other bizarre fashion. There would only be one or two at first, but after 15 or 20 thousand years, you could have an entire race. :dancin: |
| Storm_Silverhand10-11-07, 08:37 PM | Heya, I agree shifters delute the lycanthopy thing just as halfvampires do. Shifters pass on the curse to offspring right? A way of introducing them could be the mixing of a natural lycanthrope into the familiy several generation back. The "curse" usually skips some generations and emerges on heatheaded individuals in stressfull situations. Well there's the problem with that. Natural Lycanthropes are essentially humanoids or giants with animal forms. They breed true with each other to produce more Natural Lycanthropes. Natural Lycanthrops can make Afflicted Lycanthropes by bite (and it used to be, in the case of wererats, just by their saliva - so kissing or sex would easily transmit the curse in that case, but they changed that with 3rd Ed, see here: wererat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/lycanthrope.htm#wererat)). Afflicted Lycanthropes (AL) can't pass on their curse. So therefore it can't be passed on that way either... Then we need to look at Natural Lycanthrope (NL) and normal person reproducing. Since the curse is only passed along by bite, I'd say a female NLs children (with a non-Lycanthrope) would be curse free - though if you want to rule that the curse is actually passed along by blood, then the child will inherit the cursed blood from their mother (since they share blood in the womb) and be either NLs or ALs, depending on how you'd go with it. A NL male will not pass the curse on to his non-Lycanthrope lover's children, since I don't think he can bite them in the womb! :P If he bites his non-Lycanthrope lover, and then he'll only make his lover an AL, and ALs can't pass on the curse. (NLs need to be in animal or hybrid form to pass the curse along - so if the female NL stays in humanoid form for the length of her pregnancy, the chances are her children will be curse free.) (By the way, the bit about an AL not being able to pass along the curse can be found here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/lycanthrope.htm), under creating a Lycanthrope... the relevant bit quoted below in the sblock.) Curse of Lycanthropy (Su) Any humanoid or giant hit by a natural lycanthrope’s bite attack in animal or hybrid form must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or contract lycanthropy. If the victim’s size is not within one size category of the lycanthrope the victim cannot contract lycanthropy from that lycanthrope. Afflicted lycanthropes cannot pass on the curse of lycanthropy. |

There would only be one or two at first, but after 15 or 20 thousand years, you could have an entire race. Lythari are a bit different. They have no "Crinos" or hybrid wolf-man form. I Imagine lythari shifting to be more gentle then the ripping bone and muscle of a human changing shape into a true werewolf. Shifters are very "adrenal" in flavor. Lythari are more spirit like. A human family holding lythari blood could be an interesting shifter race though. Adventurers getting spiritlike flashbacks of wolftactics and the hunt under the moon. The shapeshifting could halt halfway as the blood is more diluted. Only superficial changes (half-crinos or glabro: getting slightly bigger, some bristles of hair and claws) could occur. |

In WoD and in my realms the werewolves who mate with eachother get sterile offspring. Werewolves need normal blooded partners. Who spoke it first, Malar or Selune? |

Thing to remember - Realms, and Dungeons and Dragons Lycanthropes are NOT World of Darkness Lycanthropes (Werewolves). If they are in your campaign, good for you. But if you're talking canon Dungeons and Dragons, then they don't work that way. This I could accept too. Only female true werewolves are the source of new natural lycans. (seems like a thing of Selune's work) Speaking of which. Werewolves are a curse right? Who spoke it first, Malar or Selune? We don't know. For all we know it could even have been some ancient High Magic/Epic Magic spell cast on a population of humanoids or giants. I might ask Ed, and see what he says at Candlekeep. (The original Realms Lycanthropes could even have been interlopers from another prime, so far as I know...) |
| Suin Bahhar10-12-07, 08:31 AM | I little tidbit rulesquestion: Humanoids and giants only. Hmm. So fey are naturally immune to lycanthropy? Do monstrous humanoids (like centaurs)count? When a natural lycan(NL) is humanoid could it procreate with a giant NL of the same weretype? Can NL's mix weretypes (if so maybe wolves are dominant)? (sorry it become some more than a tidbit) ^^ |
| Storm_Silverhand10-12-07, 09:06 AM | Heya, I little tidbit rulesquestion: Humanoids and giants only. Hmm. So fey are naturally immune to lycanthropy? Yep. Do monstrous humanoids (like centaurs)count? No. Monstrous Humanoid is not a subtype of Humanoid... They're actually different types. When a natural lycan(NL) is humanoid could it procreate with a giant NL of the same weretype? Interesting question. Since you can, in fact, have half giants, I'd say the answer is yes, providing they're the same weretype. But I'm not 100% sure of this, and someone may well come along and correct me. ;) (That's a hint! Back me up or prove me wrong. ;)) Can NL's mix weretypes (if so maybe wolves are dominant)? (sorry it become some more than a tidbit) ^^ No. (Well, I wouldn't allow it anyway. :)) |

There are Ogrillon though, Half-Orges, even Goliaths as of late. So I agree! I can't stop thinking about a collossal Titan wereboar stomping on a hapless village. Thanks! |
| MarkusTay6310-13-07, 12:14 AM | Actually, there was a King-Kong wanna-be Ogre Dire Wereape running around in the Shining South (I'm serious). My idea about the Lythari-based Changelings was a way to make a small group of them fit into the Realms. This way, they wouldn't be anything like the ones from Eberron, but would use the same rules and look similar. This thread made me think of something - since the 4e Elves are going to be Eladrin now, does that mean we can't have Elvish Lycanthropes anymore? What about Elvish Vampires? These new rules just may screw up more then they bargained for. |
| Suin Bahhar10-14-07, 10:04 AM | If eladrin are fey and no humanoids anymore they would resist lycantrophy. Vampirism should still work. If not than, yeah, that would be dumb. GEV will be ****** beyond imagination. KingKong in the realms?!? Which book? ^^ Lythari shifters would resemble the shaggy wolfen humanoid shifters from ebberon with predominatley white and silver hair and bigger then normal elfbuilds. With the closer Feywild in 4e lythari could become more prominent or they could even fully retreat to this realm with the coming of the spellplague and such. I prefer full lythari being prominent though. |
| Storm_Silverhand10-14-07, 06:31 PM | Heya, If eladrin are fey and no humanoids anymore they would resist lycantrophy. Vampirism should still work. If not than, yeah, that would be dumb. GEV will be ****** beyond imagination. If GEV is who I think you're referring to... Green Elves are still humanoids. ;) It's just Moon and Sun Elves who may have become Eladrin. |
| Suin Bahhar10-14-07, 07:28 PM | *plinks away tears* Indeed! All these changes to lore do appear confusing in the end. Hope FR lore still upholds some of its consistancy (like existing lore still standing as long as it isnt rewritten). I sure hope lycanthropes are in the first Monster Manual and get new interesting mechanics but stay true to existing lore. |
| MarkusTay6310-15-07, 09:30 AM | KingKong in the realms?!? Which book?Found it - he wasn't an Ogre, he was a Hill Giant - even better! Page 103 of Shining South, In the Timeline of Dambrath, Year 467 - A Hill Giant Dire Wereape named Dermos the Proud. Almost as bad as theose Gnomish Dire Weremoles that live nearby.... You know, maybe it is time to loook into another setting. |

| ADSKINNER10-22-07, 02:34 PM | Well... what is someone(s) opinion on all of it then? |
| Storm_Silverhand10-22-07, 06:58 PM | Heya, Well... what is someone(s) opinion on all of it then? Going by the article that appeared on the Dragon website... They seem to have divided elves into two subspecies made to appear as two separate races. There's the woody/Rangery/Druidy Elves, and the magical/arcaney/wizardy/sorcerery Eladrin. I'm not sure what I think about it right now. I am not even sure how it's going to translate into the Forgotten Realms. If you're interested, you can read the article here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drdd/20070905a), but you need to be registered for and logged into DI to read it. |
| ADSKINNER10-23-07, 02:54 PM | Thank you ever so much :) |
| ADSKINNER10-23-07, 02:57 PM | Oh my. That is going to cause problems. |
