What Magical Beasts are native to the House of Nature? [Archive] - Wizards Community

OK, so I'm playing a Planar Shepherd (yes, I know, my DM was warned) whose chosen plane is the House of Nature. I just hit third level, which lets me Wildshape into Magical Beasts such as (read: including, but not limited to) animals which are Magical Beasts by having a Celestial template applied.

Besides animals with the Celestial template, what sort of Magical Beasts would you think are "Native" to the House of Nature? I was thinking at least anything on the Summon Nature's Ally chain, but what about things like Hydras, Leskylors, Elysian Thrushes, Remorhaz-es...

Some are celestial in Origin, but fit with the "feel" of the House of Nature as being an ideal, primal nature-setting, but others, like Hydras, Bulettes, and so forth, are creatures that are naturally occurring on the Prime... wouldn't they necessarily be "mirrored" in the House of Nature?

EDIT: I was not only thinking of restricting the list to just animal-ish critters and the like, but because of the "good" bent of the House of Nature, any Magical beast with an Evil alignment is a no-go...

-The House of Nature...Who's in there? Let's see...Chauntea, Lathander, Silvanus, Eldath, Mielikki, Lurue, Gwaeron Windstrom, Shiallia, Nobanion, and Ubtao. Crowded little place there. Anyway, take a look at Faiths and Avatars, and Powers and Panthons, and check those deitis' agents/petitioners. I'd rule that any of those that are Magical Beasts would be found on that Plane (obviously).

Those are both 2nd Ed books, aren't they?

-Yeah, they are two of the three 3e books on the deities of the Realms. I would have referred you to Faiths and Pantheons, the 3e book, but it doesn't go into as much detail as the 2e books, and it doesn't mention the agents/petitioners of the various deities.

Below is a list of some creatures you might encounter in the House of Nature, and the sourcebooks where you will find their stats. Not all of them are native, though none of them would be out of place on the plane.

In addition to these creatures listed, you would find any creature of the animal, plant or vermin type. Any animal you encounter might also have a template, though it need not have any enhancements at all. Normal animals are by far the most commonly encountered critters on the plane. But some of them might have the celestial or fiendish templates. Others might have elemental or plant templates. You can slap just about any template on an animal that you think is justified, though I would stick with templates that are related to nature; templates that make the creatures undead or constructs would be unnatural and thus not ordinarily found there.

I agree with your notion that any magical beast that you could find on the material plane, at least those found in nature filling an ecological niche, would probably be mirrored in the House of Nature. So you would likely see pegasi, gryphons, bulletes, rhemorazes, purple worms, and most all the other magical beasts somewhere in the plane as well.

Thank you very much, that's most helpful!

Question: What is BotR2?

Also, Beast Dragons are in Dragon #321, not the Draconomicon.

Was this list compiled form the sources suggested by Lord Karsus?

BotR2 is the Bestiary of the Realms vol. 2, which is a free PDF by Tom Costa and Eric Boyd, both volumes of which are available on Eric Boyd's website at this link here: http://www.ericlboyd.com/dnd/monsters.html (http://www.ericlboyd.com/dnd/monsters.html)

While not exactly "official", the authors have impeccable FR credentials, and the material is peppered through with top-notch Realmslore. Some of the material they wrote for the PDF has even subsequently been canonized in official published FR sources (for instance, the info on equines of the Realms.)

The PDF's convert some previously existing Realms monsters and races from older editions to 3.5 stats, but also add some great new critters to fill various ecological niches, full of interesting flavor. It's a great read. Highly recommended by me.
