| Dark Moon Dragyn04-12-07, 10:13 PM | I'm looking to make a half-elf Wu Jen. Are there any particular regions I should look into, or just pick one of the half-elf regions? Any help would be most appreciated!! Thanks |
| Aldareth04-13-07, 03:10 AM | Wu Jen in the Realms is somewhat specific, anything other then a Human ( Shou,Tuigan ) that lives in Thesk or has come with a Caravan from Kara Tur , must have a really good story to back it up. So maybe a Slaver let the pregnant Elven Slave on the Golden Way to die , and a Caravan / Tuigan hunter group find it and raised it. So if you have to choose a region it have to be an non standard region for your half- elf to make sense |
| Ranger REG04-13-07, 03:52 AM | You might want to base your character in the Unapproachable East region of Faerun. |
| The_Shaman04-13-07, 12:17 PM | I believe one of the seven sisters has been to Kara-Tur, and has commented on their "wu jen" mages, so the East would be a good idea. I would suggest Thesk, which has one of the largest expatriate groups, although it could simply be that the character botched a teleport spell and was flinged half-dead halfway across Toril. |
| Lord Karsus04-13-07, 09:07 PM | -The Lythari of the Endless Wastes have Shaman. With a good enough story, I'd say, "A Half-Elf Wu-Jen? Sure, why not." So remember...Impress us! ;) |
| The Ubbergeek04-14-07, 12:04 PM | There is always spelljaming or planescaping accidents... ;) |
| EytanBernstein04-14-07, 02:44 PM | Wu Jen are on my list for the Class Chronicles series, though it will be several months before you see them. |
| The_Shaman04-14-07, 09:05 PM | Nice. Would the Shair from Dragon 315 be compatible with the Realms, by the way? I thought about putting them in Calimshan, Zakhara or the Bedines, but they do seem a little out of place with all the established magical traditions. |
| GothicDan04-14-07, 11:14 PM | Sha'ir were originally from Zakhara, I thought. |
| Old Sage04-14-07, 11:42 PM | Indeed, they are. |
| Dark Moon Dragyn04-15-07, 01:41 PM | Thanks for the advice, but actually that idea has been scrapped. I was going to change my race to dwarf, but now that I'm running the game and not playing in it, I thought it would be a good idea to play a simpler character. Anyone have ideas on a good Star Elf character? I'm going to be running my group through The Twilight Tomb soon, so I'd like to have some background for them and be able to work myself into the plot. |
| Lord Karsus04-15-07, 06:19 PM | Anyone have ideas on a good Star Elf character? -The best Star Elf is a dead Star Elf, or, preferably, a Star Elf that never existed in the first place... |
| The Ubbergeek04-15-07, 07:29 PM | -The best Star Elf is a dead Star Elf, or, preferably, a Star Elf that never existed in the first place... Again, as I said, instead of sarcasm, how about creative suggestions? |
| Dark Moon Dragyn04-15-07, 07:30 PM | -The best Star Elf is a dead Star Elf, or, preferably, a Star Elf that never existed in the first place... LOL....I have a feeling everyone will feel that way. I'm in agreement with you that there may be a few too many species of elves on Faerun, but I'm working with what I have. Oh well, I'll work it in somehow. |
| Lord Karsus04-15-07, 07:51 PM | Again, as I said, instead of sarcasm, how about creative suggestions? -I don't see you with any creative suggestions on the topic at hand either. ;) LOL....I have a feeling everyone will feel that way. I'm in agreement with you that there may be a few too many species of elves on Faerun, but I'm working with what I have. Oh well, I'll work it in somehow. -I don't have any problem with "too many Elven subraces". What I do have a problem with is Elven subraces that don't have any "basis" in the setting. For example, all Elves were created by a member of the Seldarine. Currently, no member of the Seldarine has claimed the Star Elves as their patron, and furthermore, Star Elves are actually not religious. :nonono: |

Work on that edge. |
| Lord Karsus04-15-07, 11:47 PM | Are not they an offshot of elves exilled to some strange plane? -No, they are not offshoots of anything. According to Unapproachable East, Star Elves always existed, again, although there isn't any more lore to elaborate that, and they were inserted into the Realms in UE (No, I don't count the character in Elaine's Windwalker, so no one mention it). -The long and the short of it is that the Star Elves, being very pacificistic, and recovering from the Orcgate Wars that caused much devastation in the Yuir, created their own Demiplane, the Sildeyuir, and retreated to it, so that they would be able to live peacefully in the future. |
| Old Sage04-16-07, 12:09 AM | (No, I don't count the character in Elaine's Windwalker, so no one mention it).To avoid any potential misrepresentation with regard to star elven lore, I feel it is appropriate to make note of the earlier reference. Thus -- A star elf did exist in FR fiction before the release of UE -- but we didn't have the information to make that definition. Elaine Cunningham featured a star elf, named Sharlarra, in her novel Windwalker. She explains - "First, I'm a little puzzled by the comments that star elves were "finally" recognized in a novel, as this subrace was introduced in a fairly recent game product. Second, I did not openly state that Sharlarra was a star elf because this game product had not yet been released when I was writing Windwalker. I obtained a copy of the manuscript from WotC and read it for continuity, and also for ways to tie the novel more closely with the new lore. Because of the timing, I was trying to avoid NDA restrictions, not to mention territorial issues--I don't imagine game designers would be pleased to see their new creations unveiled elsewhere. A small matter of professional courtesy. But I had no doubt that Sharlarra would be recognized for what she is. I've fielded quite a few questions about her race, some on the WotC message boards and some in email, and quite a few people made the connection without any trouble." |
| GothicDan04-16-07, 08:32 AM | Elaine tries so hard for continuity. *Sheds a tear of delight.* |
| Old Sage04-16-07, 08:46 AM | Which tells me that we're in for a real treat once the final 'Songs & Swords' book is released. :D |
| GothicDan04-16-07, 08:47 AM | I'll definitely have to read the whole series from beginning to end this summer! I just don't have any blasted time during school. :( |
| Lord Karsus04-16-07, 10:48 PM | -On that note, it saddens me a lot that Elaine goes out of her way to accomodate other authors, and that "gesture" is hardly ever reciprocated. |
| GothicDan04-17-07, 08:35 AM | Agreed. :( |
| Dark Moon Dragyn04-18-07, 12:52 AM | OK, on a different note since I have some of the key Forgotten Realms aficionados in this thread. I took a variant Sorcerer from Complete Mage and am thinking of multi-classing into the variant Fighter. Do any of you know a good FR PrC that would work with a fighter/sorcerer? Edit: I did end up going with Star Elf, but since I am running the game it shouldn't be too bad. The Gods have smiled upon our group already! Oh yeah, and do any of you know any good necromancy spells that aren't evil? I won't be getting another 1st level spell for a while, but my character is trying to stick with mainly necromancy spells, flavor only (he's wielding a scythe)! |
| Ranger REG04-18-07, 01:50 AM | I still haven't decided if I want to include Star Elf race in my FR yet. |

It did give me some nice bonuses though..... And you can never have too many subraces - figure with the other continents (Plains, Desert, Snow Elves, etc), KT (Maraloi), Zahkara (Urban Elves?) - there is something like 64,328 sub-races. And thats not even counting the ones from space and other Prime material worlds! :D |

Do not - I repeat - do not take the Stalwart Sorcerer Variant from Complete Mage. It's inferior in spellcasting and melee combat to a simple Battle Sorcerer. |
| Dark Moon Dragyn04-18-07, 02:34 PM | Do not - I repeat - do not take the Stalwart Sorcerer Variant from Complete Mage. It's inferior in spellcasting and melee combat to a simple Battle Sorcerer. Oops, too late...We played last night so my character is committed, unless I build in a rebuild quest for myself but even then it won't be that great. Meh, it's no big deal, we'll see how bad I gimped my character later on. |
| The_Shaman04-19-07, 09:30 PM | Inferior in melee perhaps, but in spellcasting? The stalwart sorcerer should have better spellcasting than the battle sorcerer, at least the way I'm looking at it. |
| Fabius Maximus04-20-07, 06:20 AM | Not if you take a level in Armored Mage. |
| Dark Moon Dragyn04-20-07, 08:35 AM | Yes, that is actually what I'm thinking of doing, but unfortunately I'm playing a star elf, so I have to keep sorcerer and fighter levels basically even because bard is their favored class. *shudder* *Sigh* Oh well, such is the character that I rolled up, but I'll make it work. I don't think there really is a good PrC from Forgotten Realms for this character, so I think I'll just go straight ftr/sor. Thanks guys! |

| MarkusTay6304-20-07, 05:58 PM | Some FR PrC's let you break the favored class rules, so you should dig a little deeper. I can't think of any off-hand, because I'm mostly a Monk player (too mant martial arts movies as a child). I know just by joining certain Monk Schools it allows me to break the rules, and I'm half-way certain there's one or two that let you break the Paladin rule as well. Happy hunting. |
| Dark Moon Dragyn04-20-07, 08:25 PM | I actually think I'm going to ditch taking fighter levels and go straight sorcerer until I can get into War Wizard. You have to love Magic of Faerun, they have some awesome PrCs in there! :D |
