Firstly anything Short of a 16th Century in design gun will not get through 1/8th inch thick Iron Plate Mail and nothing short of a Musket (the "anti-Tank gun") will get past Steel Plate late 1600 gun.

You can go 1/2 inch iron plate or even 1/2 inch steel plate to stop even some of the modern guns but the suit is to heavy and Armor like the Kind Clint Eastwood Character used in one of his Spaghetti western is unwieldy and to heavy to do more then pace. SOmething that a 18th century Gang that used bullet proof armor when robbing banks found out when they couldn't escape a chasing passé....lol

So what to do, What to do?

Spider Silk is 5 times stronger then Steel and there are large spiders in D&D so it might be a way to turn Spider silk into bullet proof Armor and Shiled.

Dragon Scales, when you can find them, are not only fire resistant (and maybe even magic resistant) but also are Dragon's natural Armor that provides them their protection against normal weapons (like guns) so Armor and Shields made of Dragon Scales Should deflect bullets much like any scale or hide of normal weapon resistant creatures whose protection comes from their particular Hide.

AnhKeg? Ahnkeg?...those Big things that look sorta like Centipedes have really hard shells and could result in Bullet proof Armor, So could Beholder Chinton

And when Magic is added into the mix Scrolls of protection from Normal Missiles, rings of the Winds, globes of Minor invulnerability, and Globe of Invulnerability come into mind.

Spells coud also be used to toughen material like Steel, Crystal, Iron,Leather and to toughen traditional armor to deflect a bullets simular to the Glass Steel spell

So all in all a Player wanting a gun in the game doesn't have to be a "bad thing"

Logic dictates that if the Players have guns then the NPC/Monster may as well. And since the NPC/Monster knows someone with a gun might be shooting at them then maybe a resourceful Npc/monster will be wearing Spider Silk Armor (especially if a Drow Gunner), or a "flak jacket" that is modified brigade armor (heavy iron plates cladded in cloth) that slows there move ment to 3 and a 1/2 iron great helm, but they are effectively "bullet proof" unless you make a called shot for 1 of the unarmored appendages.

And those that say Armor is "gone" in the real world just don't realize that instead of Plate mail modern solders use composite armors like Kevlar, composite clay, and they are even looking at Spider silk in real world R&D.

Even in Iraq a U.S. Medic was recently saved from a Insurgent's attack by his Body Armor and was able to treat the captured and wounded Insurgent that shot at him because the Medic was unharmed in the crossfire.
