I remember reading in a book about a character wearing Black Mithral but I can't find any info on the properties of the metal, any help would be great.

Probably just mithral that's been blackened for decorative purposes. Possible methods might include burning, painting, and enameling.

Because of copyright laws I don't think I can post any excerpts from the book here.

I might be able to post 3rd edition stats(that I could convert) for the stuff if someone can tell me if that is legal

Mithril is in SRD. Black mithril is just the one blackened for decorations.

... or rather not to shine in the (Under-)dark? BTW, you could "simply" add the nonmagical "camouflage" property as described in Underdark to mithril (or any sort of armor / clothing).

Jack Ravenwild in the City of Ravens novel uses a black mithral dagger. Official stats in Dragon Magazine #278 says that black mithral retains its enhancement properties in antimagic or dead magic areas.
