If you guys want to see Artemi's Entreri's deadly blade officially stated, pick up the final issue of Dragon magazine.
I won't reveal them here, but I must say, to me the stats left much to be desired.

What? Isn't it the ultimate super uber weapon you expected?

Seeing how their is not a "smoking" weapon ability in the Dungeon Master's Guide, it would have been nice if they included a (parenthetical) notation or superscript abbreviation indicating exactly where the ability is detailed.

As for whether or not it lives up to expectations, I think I would gladly see an underwhelming statistical interpretation of the weapon in an official source than have to skim through dozens of topics pondering or espousing unofficial interpretations in the Combat, Arms, and Armor section of the FR boards....seriously there are at least three threads devoted to his melee weapons on the first page alone.

Of course, it would be even better if novel authors created the in-game equivalents of people/places/things featured in their novels themselves (or in concert with a game designer) in the first place.

Word limit. Very harsh word limit. For each of those entries I had to compromise between the crunch portion and actually being able to fit in enough relevant detail in the fluff section about them, and inevitably one of them would suffer at the expense of the other. Had I had more space, I would have included more history and I'd have done a more expansive block for Charon's Claw, but the format didn't allow for that.

Usually the guys at Paizo have been incredibly gracious on letting us slide a few more words in, but in this case, it wasn't ultimately possible and I had to mince words.

I could have easily written triple the word count for my portions of that "top 20 villains" article, but there's only so much space an article can take up in a magazine, and they had to fit in the other sections, artwork, etc. Artemis got off light though when compared to others, Orcus especially (whose trimmed material would have touched upon the situation in Vaasa/Damara and his current actions against Kiaransalee, etc).

They did in the old AD&D (and I'm not a nostalgic old-timer: in that time I didn't even play, but since I've plenty of acces to old AD&D handbooks, I found many character write ups made by the very authors of the novels - RA Salvatore included: he made official stats for Drizzt, Artemis, Bruenor, Wulfgar, Catti-Brie and also Jarlaxle, Matron Baenre and many of the main characters in Menzoberranzan).

I quite like the power level Charon's Claw is at, it's just a shame we don't have the full stat block.

The article mentions a few quasi-magical abilities of Charon's Claw(that only work within range of a Mythallar), can anyone tell me if these are mentioned in any of the short stories i.e. a curious sword etc. The only other power I know of is Blacklight, but that wasn't Mythallar dependant...or was it? Is this a hint that there may be a mythallar in Calimport.

Does anyone know the enhancement cost of a smoking weapon?

As of 'Lords of Darkness', a 3.0 book which I'm not sure if it's been updated to 3.5, the "Smoking" is a +1 property.

Charon's Claw's stats, as per the last issue of Dragon, are great IMHO. Whoever wrote them: good job.

Thanx Eli for the PM. I think that is a good base for the sword and it's abilities. It opens up some questions on some of its other powres its showed. Makes me wonder if there is indeed a mythallar near Calimport.

A number of people have said this in the R.A. boards, and I agree with them and we think that it would be cool and interesting if Salvatore did a number of short storys dealing with the history of Charon's Claw, Iceingdeath, Twinkle, Heartseeker etc.

They are well done and the power level is spot on. Doesn't make it an epic weapon or anything, just a kick butt sword for a kick butt swordsman.

I think I may have started something here. I would suggest people go out and buy the Dragon Magazine, it's still available in many shops - and available for order online.

This is the last Dragon mag published and perhaps one of the best ever printed. With articles like Unsolved mysteries of D&D, wizards three, Elminster vs Raistlin, Ecology of the Tarrasque;), Treasures of Greyhawk, Demonicon of Iggwilv: Apocrypha, Volo's guide to Myth Drannor and the top 20 D&D villans, comedy from Order of the Stick and Nodwick; it really is a must-have piece of D&D history.

There are many, many contributions in the mag from Ed Greenwood, Gary Gygax, Keith Baker, Eric L. Boyd, James Wyatt, Eric Mona, Jame Jacobs; so many reasons to buy it.

I'd advise If you've got time to buy it, buy it. Even if you buy it just for the short 81-odd words about Charon's claw - you will not be disappointed by the rest of the mag.

At any rate if you choose not to buy the last of an amazing line of magazines, then the stats will probably pop up on the boards soon enough - for now I'd say buy it while you can.

Come back with your thoughts not only on Charon's Claw but the many other articles printed in the magazine and we'll have some good discussions.

I was surprised you did it the one time, Eli. ;)

(I've been tracking this thread only because Shemmy's a friend of mine. I could care less about the Claw, except for him writing it. Though now I wish I had bought it for everything BUT the Claw..)

Aye, I was hoping initially it would make people go out and but the mag, but it seems to be having the opposite affect - I don't want to be some guy selling 'pirated' copies of 'Dragun' magazine in an alley.:(

Hopefully my last post will get people buying the mag for more than 'the Claw'. Incidently Dan what were your thoughts on the last printed issue of Dragon?

Well, as I said, I didn't get it, and am not likely to any time soon. Financial matters are pretty serious right now... As in, if I didn't have a meal plan at school, I'd be starving.

But the articles, and their authors, make me think that there is little way it could go wrong!

Aye, it was an issue where they pulled out the cream of the crop to give Dragon the Farewell it deserves.
