Does anyone know if the stats for the snake-headed whips that the drow priestesses use has ever been printed? If so, which book are they in? I have a player that is a cleric of Lolth and would like to use one of those as a weapon, but I have been unable to find it so far.

Quenthel's Scourge, a +5 extending scourge of speed, which grants numerous other abilities and is very dedicated to Lolth, was stated in Dragon #302 on page 85. I believe Triel has a twin to it.

A regular scourge can be found on page 97 of the FRCS.

Drahki, what I think you're looking for is the Scourge of Fangs, which is detailed in Serpent Kingdoms.

Well, in The Drow of the Underdark the item is called Whip of Fangs and has the following 2nd Ed. stats:

1d4+1 heads
Attunement: heads attacked anyone who is not the priestess who touches it
Each head has AC 8, 2 HD, and attacks with THAC0 14 for 2d4 damage
They heads have no poison but cause a victim bitten to have "muscle-knotting pain", heads regenerate 2 hp a day in damage.

So I guess in 3rd Ed. AC 12, 2d8 hp, Attack bonus of +6, 2d4 damage, and then a Fort save or be sickened.

The web-enhancement to City of the Spider Queen does have their 3E stats as well, Serpent Kingdoms updated those to scourges.

Note that neither whips nor scourges are clerical weapons, so every priestess would have to spend an Exotic Weapon proficiency. I would assume that the Initiate of Lolth feat (not yet published anywhere) or Lolthite substitution levels would give these WPs for free. NPC priestesses should - IMHO - get it for free after spending 5 to 7 levels at the academy.

Which they do... at the expense of the other feat they could've spent the time learning instead. ;)

Officially, of course, they get nothing so far. The easy option would be to turn the scourge/whip into snakes and let them strike on their own while wielding a mace or whatever themselves.

Technically, one does not require a proficiency in this weapon; merely attunement to it will suffice. After all, one can simply rely on the snakes to attack on their own, with the wielder's BaB, no less. Granted, such an attack inflicts virtually no damage (except for the pain effect), but...

What's odd is that the Serpent Kingdoms version gives the snakes a Hide skill of +11...

Also, if you ask me, I'm not sure why a scourge should be exotic to begin with (as opposed to a whip), or how exactly one would go about tripping someone with it. Is it not, effectivelly, a cat-o'-nine-tails?

Well, the Wizards' scourge looks like this ...

... and by default, unless there is something more descriptive (e.g. a Initiate of Lolth feat), they have to take the feat. The BAB of the snakes is fine, until you reach level 7+ or/and have access to Divine Power and the like.

The Hide skill probably comes from the snakes' size and Dex modifiers, though the scourge as such will not hide, of course.

Until that level, though, you're fine, I guess. I can't imagine you require a feat to hold a rod toward the enemy and let your attuned snakes attack someone. Plus, I doubt this sort of item is intended to be a Priestess' principal means of defense.

I understood the mechanics behind the skill; I just thought it was pointless to include them. :)

I'd say knowing how to wack someone with one and knowing how to fight someone with one would be the difference, and the justification for it being Exotic. I can swing at a baseball, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna be cracking skulls with a bat the way someone trained in that sort of combat would, y'know?

But, yes. I certainly agree that quite a few Exotic weapons don't NEED to be Exotic.

Right, right, and I think I stated my question/querry poorly: generally speaking, exotic weapons are deemed thus because they allow for extra attacks, tripping attempts, or something similar. Given this, how the heck did someone think you can *trip* someone with the scourge? It makes no sense.

Going by what we know though, drow priestess get these "whips of fangs" after graduating the academy an assumed level of 6 or 7. At that point and later on - without the feat - they become nice tools of punishment, but not fighting. Which was my point. Spend a feat on them and you can apply all the niceties of Divine Power, Divine Favor and the like. We'll see what TDotUD will provide next month.

Tripping ... I'd say you only trip someone with a scourge in an opportune moment. There is no need to do it, the tails just make it easier by entangling/hinder the movement of the legs or something. Of course, Improved Trip boost that bonus even more, you'll just won't find a cleric burning a feat on somesuch (especially if you could use Righteous Might instead).
