Ashing: An Ashing weapon creates a 5 ft. (L) by 10 ft. (H) wall of opaque ash that lasts for 4 rounds and begins to dissipate on the 5th, the wielder of The ashing weapon may continue to create the ashing effect for up 10 rounds 3/day while moving up to his or her full movement. The wall of ash give the wielder full concealment and his or her opponent(s) effectively loses their dexterity bonus, any class with the sneak attack ability can take full advantage of this. The wielder is totally un-hindered by the opaque ash and is able to see his or her opponent(s).

Faint Transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, pyrotechnics; Price +2 bonus.

Just wanted an opinion is this ability balanced what suggestion might you have to improve it that is all I am asking

I would make it a +4 because they can see thru the ash... I never remember Arty being able to see thru the ash

Looks like the ability of Charons Claw to me.

I that case Ashing should be a +2 because you can move the effect it however does not fill an area since it is only an 1 inch thick opaque wall which I will correct in the description.

I have notice that some of the responses or it's the way I am interpreting them. Seem some what limited in imagination which Dungeons and Dragons is meant to expand. As the title of my post said "inspired by Artemis Entreri's Charon's Claw". I would like to thank Duagloth for pointing out the smoking ability much appreciated I have read that description and it confirms the Ashing ability is very much workable

ehh ignore the Arty comment then... but to be able to see thru the ash as well is abit powerful for a plus two mod

I shall play test it more. I also would like, if you wish, to also play test it. Drew have you read the the smoking ability from Magic of Faerun, I am assuming you did since you are a Realms fan.

I apologize in my haste I referenced the wrong book. Lords of Darkness page 180

Smoking: Upon command, a smoking weapon fills the wielder's area (a 5 foot square with noxious smoke equal to a stinking cloud spell. The smoke effects any creature that enters the wielder's area (such as to make a grapple attempt) and provides one-half concealment for the wielder. The wielder is not effected by the nauseating fumes and can see through them normally. The smoke dissipates instantly if the wielder leaves the smoke-filled square, forming again in what ever area the wielder ends his movement.
A creature with a face larger than 5 ft. by 5 ft. still only has one square enveloped in smoke; only attacks that cross or enter the smoke-filled area are subject to the miss chance.
Caster Level: 5th; Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, stinking cloud; Market Price: +1

I think if something seems to powerful you just need to adjust to balance it, at your game table. Usually talking it over with all them gamers when you feel something is over balancing in your game. The smoking I found has limitations it does not protect from area attacks like fireballs or Evard's Black tentacles

Both Lords of Darkness, and Magic of Faerun are 3.0 books, and thus most rules and abilities can no longer be looked upon as valid for 3.5 use.

Both Lords of Darkness, and Magic of Faerun are 3.0 books, and thus most rules and abilities can no longer be looked upon as valid for 3.5 use.

Other than the retooling of 3.0 the rules still can apply, I think it is ashame if people think otherwise because that means all imagination or creation is stymied.

3.5 is the newest version and if unnoticed every thing from earlier additions have been brought forward.

It is for each individual to apply rules and adjust rules accordingly to their game enviroment.

Remember all the gaming material out there are guidelines to your home game and everyone should have the right to adjust the rules of the game to their liking even play testing their own material.

Do not forget that these are your campaigns and your worlds you could actually kill of Elminster Gods forbid.

Please keep your creative juices flowing and thank all the gaming gods for their contribution.

I was merely pointing out 3.0 rules now need to be taken with a grain of salt, as when compared to the new system, they are often overpowered.

Don't get me wrong, I like alot about 3.0, but for conversion the general rule is check, check, and check again, before accepting the 3.0 version as the correct one.

as for the ashing- can you break through this wall? i would think so, so you might want to mention that because there are some people that take full advantage of what's not being said (advertisers). im kind of shaky about the "see through the wall" idea because it makes it a little unfair in my opinion- i like the idea of
A. put up a wall to escape back to the shadows or out the window
B.catch your enemy by surprise and leap through it
if you go with B., then i think there should always be that chance that a more intelligent enemy anticipated your attack, and dodged aside (5-foot-step), so when you come crashing through, you have to really test your improvisational skills (or tumbling-same thing :P). i mean, improvisation and manipulation are a bit scoudrel-ish to me, and i think you'd be scoundrel-ish enough to put up an ash wall to further confuse your opponents. i mean, master fighters will use the ash wall, but a lot of less intelligent NPC fighters don't really improvise, they are "prepared for any situation" a lot of the time.
though i stand by jarlaxle:
"improvisation- the mark of a true warrior." yes- that's right!

From how I see it. You should be able to move through it the ash and be able to sneak attack. Also the wielder can see through the ash right?
