| Calmar02-28-07, 12:37 PM | Mayhap or not, I will start as a human knight in a game that probably will start sooner or later... Despite the airyness of the situation I thought I spend one my valuable feats on Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword) and Two-Weapon Fighting, to gain full access to a powerful and knightly weapon and to use a spiked light shield for bashing weaker enemies. If I also took Improved Shield Bash and manage to catch a heavy mithral shield, it could, combined with the knight's shield block ability, become quite interesting. On the other hand, a light shield does not give much protection, and 1d4 points of damage are not that great (to waste 10.000 silvers for a magical enhancement would not be a clever investition, I fear). What art you thinking - to bash or not bash? :) |
| Echo_that_Pains02-28-07, 02:14 PM | Bashing is a very viable option especially if you are willing to sink a few funds into your shield. A few months ago I was playing a blackguard that had a +3 Spined Heavy Shield of Bashing +3 (IIRC). The price was pretty heavy, but it did 2d6 + 3 + (1/2 str mod) to damage and with the correct feats I did not loose the AC bonus. It also was able to shoot 1 spine 3/day that did 1d10 (IIRC). Throwing in 2 weapon fighting will prevent the penalty from offhand attacks and if you do this very often is a very good idea. I would almost say "No" to sinking a feat into Exotic Prof for the Bastard Sword. A longsword is a d8 vs. a d10 which is not worth a feat IMO. You will get a better turnaround from an additional shield feat than you would for a sword. Then again, this is all just my opinion. |

| Tevin Kevlak03-05-07, 04:06 PM | If you're going the shield bash route I'd suggest picking up Agile Shield Fighter from the PHB 2. It allows one to make a shield bash attack without needing the TWF to lessen the penalties so that means you wont have to invest so highly in a dexterity score. |
| Echo_that_Pains03-08-07, 10:35 PM | Where is the "spined" magic weapon ability from? -- George Krashos "Spined" is not an ability but a shield that is located in the DMG (Spined Shield). My DM allowed me to pay extra to make it an enhancement since I already was getting spikes. |

| Dargoth03-10-07, 07:48 AM | Where is the "spined" magic weapon ability from? -- George Krashos Id say he means shield spikes which can be found on page 125 of PHB |

| ClobberinTime03-13-07, 09:12 PM | I have been thinking along the same lines, I don't have the PHB II, but in the current RAW, you need to take the improved offhand weapon feat from Complete Warrior to use a heavy shield in your off hand for bashing without penalty since its a medium one handed weapon, whereas a light shield is a medium light weapon. There is a shield in the BoED which is called an Asura shield I belive that is spiked and bashing, they give it a whopping 2d6 damage, since the base damage is 1d6 and it goes up two categories. However I think they misused the rules there since its not clear that the bashing weapon property can apply to the spike on the shield. |
