My group and I are underwater, thanks to a water breathing spell. The group consists of:
1Barb/2Fght/3Rogue/3Holy Liberator Human
4Barb/5Fighter Human
4Barb/4Fighter Half Orc
2Fighter/4Paladin Human
4Barb/4Fighter Dwarf

On average, we have +1 magic weapons and AC20. Outside of wand of cure light wounds, we don't have much else in the way of magic.

The environment, while being underwater, is also in a submerged church. We're thinking we can try to get the kraken stuck in the church somehow, but other than that we're sort of at a loss for what strategy to use to fight it.

Anyone have any ideas on how to beat this thing and not die?

Hope that your DM already prepared a Deus Ex Machina for you. Even outside of the water this would be a impossible fight and inside the water you are at a serve disadvantage because you have to make swim checks.
And a Int 21 creature becoming stuck in a temple? Better hope that your DM doesn't normally read the ability scores of monsters.
Rather then trying to find ways to kill the Kraken, try finding ways to avoid the combat.

Tell your DM you want to go get the Krakenscourage (a unique weapon).

Out of the frying pan ...

It swims faster than you, it's grapple check will be ridiculous even if a "standard" Kraken. The spell will eventually wear off, the Kraken has the ability to use magic items as well.

9 attacks if it chooses to use full attack with 2 attacks at 60ft reach, and it's bound to make most grapple checks against your party which adds constrict damage.

Hey at least you'll get to see what the inside's of a Kraken look like before darkness claims you.

No seriously, this creature is not to be fought underwater period unless you guys at least 12 level or better.

Let me be the latest in the line to say;

Run dude (well, swim) and pray to whomever might be willing to hear.

Alternatively. . . you could try and find a room where it will only be able to come at you with a tenticle or two and hope against hope that it loses interest before your water breathing magic wears off. . .

Yeah, all I can think is to try and find small places where the kraken really can't get at you effectively. . . and that's a long shot really (as Derren pointed out, it's very intelligent)

Real world octopuses are very, very flexible, able to squeeze through extremely small openings and so on. Don't count on a Kraken being much different. If you can get through, so can it.

Apart from that, if you absolutely have to fight no matter what, here's what you need to do:
Freedom of Movement. No way around it. With FoM, you get no more penalties for fighting underwater, and YOU CAN'T BE GRAPPLED, which is the single most important thing against the Kraken of all possible threats.

Avoid full attacks at all cost. If it can rake you eight times plus a bite, your poor 100 hp are going to be way too low to help you. It's attacks all use more or less the same attack bonus, so never, never, never let it full attack you. Use ranged weapons, or let it come to you, hit it, retreat. Accept an attack of opportunity instead of a devastating nine attacks in a full attack. If you followed the FoM advice above, you'll not be grappled in an AoO and will be able to get away.

Fighting in close quarters at least nixes the reach benefit the big K has. You'll not be able to flee as it is, so you don't lose much by making the battlefield a bit constricted.

You need magic, you need magic, you need magic, oh, and you'll probably need some magic, too. If you succeed with a Hold Monster, the fight is over. If you can use Wall of Ice or Ice Storm or even Otiluke's Freezing Sphere, being underwater can actually become beneficial, as the monster might be trapped in the ice and float to the surface. Similarly with any spells using electricity (watch out, though!) while submerged in salt water. If I were the DM, I'd apply the Enlarge and Widen Spell to any electricity spells underwater, and probably Empower, too.

Oh right, almost forgot:

Settle your worldly matters.

Write a last letter to your wife and children.

Pray.

ay, it's what I thought, we're doomed.

I checked out the Kraken in the MM and thought I'd come here for ideas, because I figured there wasn't any way we could hack n slash it, but it doesn't look like we can do anything. The best we have AC is 21, so it's going to always hit us. The best I can hope for is that it only uses 2 attacks at most on a couple of people, leaving everyone else to be attacked once.

Being at the bottom of the ocean, we don't have much cover, except the submerged church. The party arrived via a underwater passage that ran about 400 yards. I don't know if that passage is small enough to prevent it from following us, should we get away from it long enough.

The party got roped into an investigation that lead to a serial killer who was actually mind controlled. The kraken having it's own cult perpetuated the killings. Along the way we fought super Skumm and undead sharks.

The one thing I did forget to mention is that we found a lute and a locked box. It's possible that these items could help, but I'm not optomistic. I mean, what does a lute have to do with a kraken?

I like the tips, of Hold Monster and other similar spells, but none of us are spell casters of the arcane persuasion. Getting in close is helpful, can it reach us with its tentacles if we're 5 ft away?

The settling worldy matters....funny you mention that. No one knows the party went underwater. If the party loses, no one will know.

Get that box open and test out the flute, unless your DM wants you dead (or rules that since you decided to track down the kraken early then you've gotta deal with it *g*) then those items may be your salvation.

We don't play again until Friday the 13th (ugh, it doesn't get any easier does it?), but I'll let you know what happens. :P

Happen to have a Medusa Head in a Red cloak handy?
