Magic weapon Idea [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-11-07, 05:06 PM This idea is based on the double sword idea. A player in my game wants to create a double sword that looks like a staff when the scabbards are on, like a sword cane but longer. The staff has 2 wooden sheathes that conceal the sword blades on either end to make it look like a walking staff. The double sword has the specs of a regular double sword. This version of a sword staff can separate in the middle and now the wielder has 2 swords, 1 in each hand (like darth maul in star wars). Another idea is that if the player decides to use it as a staff without taking off the wooden sheaths it would follow the spec of a staff (bludgeoning damage etc.). Now what about enchanting the sword blades however you want, holy, electric...and enchanting the staff as a seperate weapon? example enchanting the staff with the wooden sword sheathes on and putting a disrupting enchant on it, but if you use as a sword then no disruption ability because the scabards are off?

03-13-07, 02:38 AM doesn't sound too bad, the swords seem kind of short, but it doesn't matter overmuch. I'd be against the scabbard-as-staff idea since it's not designed for that sort of thing. Or, if it IS designed for that sort of thing, make sure you calculate that into whatever balance calculations you have.

03-13-07, 10:11 AM Sounds expensive. By the rules of the game, every part of a weapon that can do damage on its own must be enchanted separately. Thus, a double weapon costs double if both ends are enchanted. The thing you describe seems to be a triple weapon!

03-13-07, 03:42 PM in theory yes it is a triple weapon, but it seemed an interesting way to have 2 swords (possibly rapier like) and a staff built into 1. as well as having the swords concealed if needed into the staff. and yes I would make the weapon crafting expensive. if the player wants to put all his eggs in 1 weapon then thats fine with me.

03-13-07, 05:06 PM Well, with the sheath on you wouldn't be hitting with the enchanted part of the blade, thus would you not have to enchant the sheath part?

Also, my concern with that weapon would be durability. If you are hiding two swords and springing mechanisms in a staff you are severely weakening all of the above.

If he is wanting a metalic lightsaber, I would suggest using magic of some sort. You could rule that a shrink item causes the actual blade part (only) to shrink (appearing to vanish)...alternatively the double sword could simply be enchanted with an illusion to make it appear as though its a simple walking staff. Its not and can't be used as such (though it could be used to deal subdual damage via the normal rules). The wielder could drop the illusion at will to reveal what it is and the illusion could further be enhanced to make it appear as though swords are springing forth.

03-13-07, 07:06 PM I think you missed the point, Tarus - There are no moving parts. Basically you have a handle in the middle, with two wooden covers for the bades at either end. Slip the covers (scabbards) off and wallah, instant double-sword. It should be possible to slip off one cover, and use it as a VERY long handled short sword, similar to a Ninja-to.

Also, it would be neat if you could suprise an opponent (who thinks you only have a staff) by swinging the staff in his direction and letting one of the wooden ends fly off and hit him. In a pinch, you could have two short-range missile weapons to use if you practised using it that way. :D

03-14-07, 01:13 AM Your getting the idea. Imagine a 6 foot walking staff that is essentially a double sword, the blades being long and skinny, like a rapier, being covered by wooden sheaths, like a katana scabbard. In your turn you could slide off both sheaths and have a double sword. Or slide off both sheaths and then with a twist in the middle unscrew the double sword and now you have two 1 handed swords, 1 in each hand.

03-14-07, 04:51 AM for durability and even more versatility i would make the blades the length and the form of short swords , then you forget a additional use that of a naginata/spear

03-14-07, 12:13 PM This would be an EXCELLENT weapon for a Ninja incognito, and if I may I would like to borrow it for the work I'm doing on Kara-Tur. Ninjas had several weapons that doubled as other useful devices.
