Reach weapons, feats, or races. [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-21-07, 03:44 PM Still roughly a newbie to the game even though I read books. I'm looking for a reach weapon for a character I'm building, but it seems like all reach weapons, besides the spiked chain and whip, are not able to attack adjacent enemies.
1) Are there others that aren't in the normal d20 system? It's ok for exotic weapons if I need to take a feat for it.
2) I know there is the feat monkey grip, that allows a two handed weapon to be used in one hand. Is there another feat that allows a 'one catagory higher then large' weapon be used two-handed? And would this not allow a medium creature using a two-handed weapon for a large creature, in two hands, to have reach?
3) Are there any 'normal' races that that allow reach?

10-21-07, 05:07 PM I know only of the optional light version of the spiked chain, the kasuri-gami in the DMG with reach at both 5ft and 10 ft away. Ebberon has the scorpion chain too.

Only reach weapons of the correct size increase the effective reach of your characters. So a human fighter with monkey grip using a large sized long spear would have a reach of 5ft (no increased range even if its colossal; funny heh?).

The feat shorthaft fighting in complete warrior I believe allows a charcter to reduce their effective reach by 5 ft with a swift action. Really good.

Any large bipedal creature has a natural reach of 10 ft.

10-21-07, 07:12 PM The last line in the PHB on reach weapons (pg 112) states a Large Creature with an appropriate sized reach weapon can make attacks at 15 to 20 feet away. I read that as if the size of the weapon isn't large it will not give the benefits of reach.

10-21-07, 08:50 PM Suin Bahhar, that doesn't address the Medium creature with weapon one size bigger then an appropriate sized large weapon for him.
