| MerrikCale02-10-07, 09:29 AM | anybody use anything besides a rapier? how do you like it? |
| BelainDefenderofJerusalem02-11-07, 05:59 PM | ELVEN THINBLADE!!!! its a beast |
| MerrikCale02-11-07, 08:37 PM | ELVEN THINBLADE!!!! its a beast why? |
| Khaelieth02-11-07, 08:47 PM | It's a rapier with D8 damage, exotic though. Some DM's might give elves weapon familiarity with it. Though only Gold Elves should have it, IMO. The rest are too barbaric. |
| Valgard02-13-07, 10:41 AM | I didn't tried it, but I would love a swashbuckler wielding a spiked chain. |
| DADERDADY02-13-07, 11:50 AM | I use a greatsword but thats just my opinion |
| bondious02-13-07, 07:46 PM | I didn't tried it, but I would love a swashbuckler wielding a spiked chain. My girlfriend played a swashbuckler chick wielding a spiked chain, and it worked out pretty well, though that game didn't last all that long. Too bad, too... The rapier just screams "Swashbuckler", though. Maybe a parrying dagger if two-weapon fighting, and/or a whip or whip dagger as a backup/utility weapon. |
| Khaelieth02-14-07, 11:57 AM | One of my adventurers played a human assassin/rogue who used a spiked chain. Pity he and my brother had to charge a wizard with stout bodyguards. |
| Tobek02-14-07, 09:36 PM | I was always rather fond of the Cutlass. The FR rules state it is a light weapon so it should be finessable (even though the Real World Equivalent would have been anything other than light). |
| The_Shaman02-17-07, 05:10 PM | I once did a staff-wielding swashie; the DM allowed the staff to be a double finessable weapon. However, we lost the DM so I've put the character in deep freeze. The main problem was imo getting enough feats: I wanted to use the quickstaff style from CW to boost his defense, and then go for dervish (modified to allow blunt weapons) / tempest. Technically, such a build could have a near-insane AC. Otherwise, a kukri or short sword double-wielder could do some fun things, too, especially with the PHBII variant. |
| BloodofNumenor02-17-07, 09:17 PM | I use a greatsword but thats just my opinion How's that finessible? |
| Green Elven Vampire02-17-07, 09:26 PM | Well, you'll wanna have two weapons to fight with on you at all times even if you don't always fight with two. I'd say Sabre and dirk. Artemis Entreri used to fight with a Sabre and dirk |
| MerrikCale02-19-07, 09:19 PM | Well, you'll wanna have two weapons to fight with on you at all times even if you don't always fight with two. I'd say Sabre and dirk. Artemis Entreri used to fight with a Sabre and dirk But you can't finesse a sabre |
| Gemcaster02-20-07, 03:39 AM | Elven courtblade, its a finessable greatsword. |
| Green Elven Vampire02-20-07, 04:18 AM | Are you playing a human or elf? Elven thinblades are your best bet, but elves don't just hand those kinda weapons out to non elves, so they would be hard to get if you're human. Why not go with two daggers, or a dagger, dirk combo? |
| bondious02-20-07, 04:30 AM | Are you playing a human or elf? Or a pair of short swords would work, too. |
| ZenZ02-21-07, 11:18 AM | How about a Main Gauche that springs open to trap blades? |
| bloodtalon02-28-07, 09:58 AM | for a memebr of the group i game with his swashbuckler/rogue had a spring loaded gauntlet on his off hand and used it as a nasty surpise and to help with sneak attack . in his primary hand he had a rapier. |
| ZenZ02-28-07, 10:53 AM | One thing you never see is cloaks or capes used as weapons/ shields. Very popular in the late 1500 to 1700's. The buckler is also a fine swashbuckler weapon and even helped define the term "swashbuckler". |
| Eled_the_Worm_Tamer03-08-07, 09:41 PM | Spiked Chain can be hightly effectave if you like Triping/disarming, and is an unusual and versitile weapon very suted to a Swashbuckler. Plain honest daggers are good when combined with the Invisible blade Prc too. |
| Delzounblood03-16-07, 12:48 PM | But you can't finesse a sabre If you use the 2e version of the sabre yes you can Finesse as it is a light fencing weapon in 3.5e the same type of sabre is now classed as the scimitar where as the mounted sabre or cavalry sabre is a longer heavy weapon designed for slashing from horse back. my combo is the same in 2e and 3.5e Sabre (scimitar) in 1st hand Drik in 2nd hand or Buckler in 2nd hand. Though mostly I just use One Hand as per Errol Flinn etc: Delz |
| Mecha_Pope03-20-07, 12:54 PM | I house-ruled single-handed weapons to be finessable when weilded in two hands, which makes it possible to finesse all sorts of cool, and sometimes horrible things. Thog, the Famous Orcish Swashbuckler, with his graceful club-work. |
| Mpinkard03-21-07, 11:13 AM | Playing a Gistault Swashbuckler/Aristocrat with one other person in a small side campaign and he uses a Sword cane/rapier. This character has style, grace and quick-wit. Not really about doing the most damage it is all about not getting hit. Another enjoyable weapon is the whip, trip and grapple to keep your foe from closing in on you. |
| Khaelieth03-21-07, 06:22 PM | Spiked Chain can be hightly effectave if you like Triping/disarming, and is an unusual and versitile weapon very suted to a Swashbuckler. Plain honest daggers are good when combined with the Invisible blade Prc too. Rogue with spiked chain and a cleric pumped up with enchantments KILLS THINGS. Tested this, and they could do almost anything they wanted to. |
| The Ranger03-26-07, 10:51 PM | Try two-weapon fighting with two rapiers. The critical hits just pile up. |
| Tevin Kevlak03-27-07, 01:38 AM | If you're going for crits and 2 weapon fighting take the elven light blade. It's a light weapon 1d6 damage and a 18-20 crit. Being both light weapons you wont take a -4 to each attack as you would with 2 rapiers. |
| Narsil03-27-07, 04:00 PM | It's a rapier with D8 damage, exotic though. Some DM's might give elves weapon familiarity with it. Though only Gold Elves should have it, IMO. The rest are too barbaric. Ironic, that. Gold Elves are the only base elven subrace which doesn't gain a dexterity bonus, and it's simultaneously going to be the only elven subrace which gains elven thinblades in your campaigns? Silver Elves are more capable of close-range combat, are one of the three subraces capable of becoming Elven High Mages and they more resemble the common D&D Elves, just a little bit more tolerant and less anti-everythingthatisn'tanelf. I'd say Silver Elves, Gold Elves and Copper Elves should be able to take up the use of elven thinblades for close-range combat purposes. |
| Bantam03-27-07, 04:18 PM | I'm of the opinion that a swashbuckler needs to be able to do slashing damage, like say cutting a rope to swing with, so I like the Elven Longblade (like Thinblade but slashing damage) from Dragon 351 or so (it's from the Dark Sun campaign setting and would have to be modified to be made of metal, not bone) |
| marcel_deathbringer03-27-07, 04:55 PM | Cutlass!! A cutlass is the signature weapon of any good Swashbuckler or pirate!! |
| The Ranger03-27-07, 09:39 PM | If you're going for crits and 2 weapon fighting take the elven light blade. It's a light weapon 1d6 damage and a 18-20 crit. Being both light weapons you wont take a -4 to each attack as you would with 2 rapiers. Don't rapiers count as light weapons for both weapon finesse and the two-weapon fighting feats? |
| bitter thorn03-27-07, 09:44 PM | I don't believe so; they are finessable but not light, per se. |
| redmagefish03-28-07, 06:52 AM | two words dire sword |
| Sir_Wolfgar03-29-07, 02:22 AM | Elven Diashalyar (I believe the spelling is correct) From a Dragon magazine which featured swashbucklers before the Complete series even started. It's a two-handed double weapon, one end a rapier, the other a dagger. I don't think there is anyway it would be a plausible weapon in real life, but for DnD, why not. |
| lightcwu03-29-07, 04:53 AM | Personally I say go into Dervish for a prestige class and rock the scimitar. |
| The_Shaman04-01-07, 08:47 AM | Dervish swashies are good. Has anyone tried the non-cheesy chains btw? I mean kusarigami, chain pash, Lynx paw (afaik, the one in RotW), etc? |
| Burningspear04-01-07, 08:25 PM | I have played a "Turk strongman looking type swashbuckler" with a Large Morningstar. Name: Vhaedos ..forgot his last name :(, have to dig him up :tie: he was from Unther and was Rogue 3, Fighter 2, Monk 2, Cleric 4, Duellist 2 when we stopped that campaign.. I can go on and on about this character as i loved him to bits I took for his looks the picture in an old Dragon regarding an article about platers and Dm managing economics and treasure. ill find a link :tie:, cant find it, and that issue +most my books are abroad, so i cannot easily look into it, can anybody help me out here? i actually want to "buy"/ find that picture and "reacquire" it... I used for the weapon the pic in Dungeon 93, page 96, i see him as "dancing in a medium to slow continues motion" with this kinda weapon, arcing it all the time in 2 hands, not wearing armor and needing a lot of space to move this kind of combat style |
| ClobberinTime04-02-07, 11:23 AM | If I am using two weapons and want to get the most out of my swashbuckler I always go with dual short swords. I always Multiclass into fighter for 4 levels and get weapon focus short sword and weapon specialization short sword. If you mess around with exotic weapons and or medium size off hand weapons you have to use too many feats, and the +2 damage really helps. |
