| Winged_Death03-07-07, 04:21 AM | Hi guys, Any general tips when fighting a Balor. Wont give party specifics cause i dont want to know how to do it. Just would like some general tips. Thanks |
| Critalondel03-07-07, 06:56 AM | Just make sure you can run faster than at least one other party member, and you should be able to get away okay. ;) |
| Winged_Death03-07-07, 08:06 AM | Well i am the only person in the party capable of moving at 40 feet a round and we do have some full plate clerics... LOL Is their any way to stop it from using teleport and also stop it from flying? |
| Kid SixXx03-07-07, 08:10 AM | Just make sure you can run faster than at least one other party member, and you should be able to get away okay. ;) Indeed. Boots of Speed.. Run in the opposite direction of the flames. Seriously though you aren't going to stop the Balor from doing what it wants to do. You'll pretty much be concerned with the basics (ie. magical weapons that will overcome its DR, making sure your spells stick, praying it doesn't gate in friends to help it kill you all). |
| Stigger03-07-07, 08:25 AM | Well... maybe you could do something really fun if you have an arcane caster who happens to be able to cast Perfect Summons from book of exalted deeds... not sure it would affect a gated in creature offhand, but having a balor summoning celestials who immediately jump him could make for some interesting moments. If you have Book of Exalted Deeds you can find that spell along with a lot of other fun stuff to combat evil with. More practical perhaps though would be spells that blocked dimensional travel, lowered spell resistance, and otherwise negated some its advantages. Maybe asking your DM for a few knowledge (the planes) checks to see if you can figure out what sort of spells and damage types affect it most would be, and equipping yourself appropriately. Web spells could be useful, since as far as I know they bypass SR and can effectively ground it so you don't have to close right away and can soften it up a bit. Investing in a wand of web might be wise really, in case you need it a few times during the fight. |
| Turin7103-07-07, 09:05 AM | Convert to [insert Balor patron diety here], repent later. |
| Xavier_of_Cormyr03-07-07, 09:10 AM | Dimensional Anchor & Dimensional Lock.. if you can beat its SR, it's a nifty way of keeping the Balor from teleporting (anchor) or from calling for back up (lock) Other than that... stay mobile. You don't wanna go punch for punch with a Balor. And take these two words to heart: FIRE RESISTANCE :P |
| Dark_beebles03-08-07, 02:35 AM | Well depends on your level...1 balor aint really a problem for a party if they are near its cr. You can stop it from doin w/e it wants and kill it rather quickly as well. But cant give ya much info cuz ya dont know your party... and about running..no way it can fly faster then any normal pc cept a monk or a alt.ranger/scout/barb. plus dm can switch its feats to have quicken spell like ability teleport... Offense is the key..you cant out defense this guy...well not everyone in the party can. Hinder its attacks or make it lose hd or lvl's...is your best shot Split ray'd Emp'd Enervation..is a good way to start if you have a max rod..even better..thats 12hd gone..with a -12 to all saves, ability checks, skills, and attacks. and 60hp gone as well. |
| Empirate03-08-07, 01:13 PM | If you're going toe to toe with a Balor, you might have the option of recruiting some powerful backup. If you can get one or more high-powered Celestial via Greater Planar Ally or Greater Planar Binding, or even Gate, then perhaps the Balor will focus on these first. A Deva or Eladrin is highly mobile, which can save your bacon because of their healing power. One thing you don't want is the Balor getting a critical hit with his Vorpal Longsword. Get Fortification Armor or spells to the same effect. Fire Resistance, as has been mentioned, is advisable, but if you know what's coming, why not Spell Immunity to protect against the Balor's most powerful abilities (Fire Storm, Implosion...)? If the spellcasters need to do anything direct against the beast, have them twin their spells so they stand a better chance of beating SR and save. They do have Spell Penetration, don't they? Have some blessed weapons ready (get a Paladin for this, or get a wand/bunch of scrolls and give them to your UMD monkey). Be sure to give the Balor the last bit with ranged attacks, coz he'll explode in a rather nasty way that can leave your whole party dead or dying if you've been damaged a little earlier on (which just might happen in a Balor fight). |
| Renvale99903-08-07, 08:28 PM | When fighting a Balor... Step 1: Dimensional Anchor Step 2: Negate flying ability somehow Step 3: Pull out a...arhck, ack!! *Thwap* *Slice* gurrrrgggleeee Be this a lesson to all you pathetic whelps as this lesser mortal has been cut down by Lord Yukenexrazor, High Guard to the Demon Prince Demogorgon. Now, any more stupid questions? |

I dont understand what you mean by have them twin their spells. Could you please explain? Like the idea about the planar ally. |
| Green Elven Vampire03-09-07, 03:44 AM | I dont understand what you mean by have them twin their spells. Could you please explain? Like the idea about the planar ally. There is a metamagic feat that allows you to cast the same spell twice on the same target or same area. It's called Twin Spell! Try to attain prestige classes that also aid in slaying a Balor. Or at least distract it with a Summon Monster spell while casting protective spells on yourself, and then cast every high level damage inflicting spell you have. Possibly a simple spell will even work. Try casting Phantasmal Killer on the Balor and maybe it's own worst fear will kill the beast. As long as you defeat its SR and ST it'll work. |
| Khaelieth03-09-07, 10:35 PM | Banishment or one of those nasty anti-outsider spells. |
| Optimystik03-13-07, 09:39 PM | Holy Word/Dictum anyone? I think you might need some protection from fear effects too - can't do much damage if you're curled up in a ball howling your lungs out. |
