08-02-07, 10:38 AM Alright, after reading the current novels on Artemis and Jarlaxle I have a few questions. Within the novels Artemis draws some of a shades shadow essence from him with his vampiric dagger making him more or less of the man he was.
So what are the various effects of this dagger on other types of creatures such as fiends and undead?
What would happen if you did siphon some of the undeads unlife energies into yourself or the fiends demonic soul less life force?
Would it damage you rather than heal you or would it make your charector more powerful in a sense?

08-02-07, 07:10 PM I think the vampiric capabilities work by taking positive or negative energy, so if entreri would use his dagger ona undead, he would get weaker. My take of course, but considering how it's depicted, it makes sense.

08-04-07, 08:10 PM According to the latest version of the vampiric property in the Magic Item Compendium, a vampiric weāpon's effect only works on living creatures. Against non-living creatures, such as undeads or constructs, it simply wouldn't work. On fiends, it just works normally, dealing hp damage to the hit creature while healing your own hp. Anything else is the author's (or DM'S) poetic licence.

08-28-07, 03:58 PM Artemis' weapon (and RA's books in general) has never followed the rules word for word, and nor should they.

I get annoyed when players get smart saying, "well that wouldn't work since blah blah blah". I feel like saying "Its my freaking game so deal with it", and I do more often then not.

RA HAD to do something to help Artemis, otherwise he'll be completely useless by 4th ed and the ten year fast forward. Part of his charm is that he's a human doing things that only centuries old dark elf warriors wished they could do, the down side is he can't do them for very long.

Its better than making him an all out Shade and its better than some other cheesy ploy to extend his life.

Overall I give the plot line a B+. It will go to A+ if he does something with it past that!

08-28-07, 05:14 PM Maybe Entreri rolled three 20's in a row, and on that rare occasion (which just so happened to be against that shade) the dagger absorbed something more than just the life energy of the target, allowing Artemis to retain a piece of his foe...hence the possible "demi-shade" condition he may now have...maybe. ;)

Well, Vampiric Weapons have never worked on Undead as the essense driving them is usually more magical if not all ready "dead".

Vampiric Weapons may draw life force from Automations and Golems depending on the type it is (Elemental driving thing? Yes, Magically animated? No)

Demons are explainer life as are the so called "gods" and other near,pseudo,and/or immortal life in the outer planes so after natural and added magic Resistance and natural and added anti-magic abilities of such creatures are apllied, it is possible to suck the life out of outter plane creatures.

As far as the Vampiric Weapon attacking a Shade? Since being a Shade is a Magical manipulation of the Life force I would think that the Life force stolen with a vampiric Weapon would logically do "funny things" to the User of a Vampiric weapon on such a Mutant lifeforce much like killing a "god" with a Vampiric weapon might make the weilder asorb some of it's "divinity"

11-21-07, 03:34 PM salvatore describes the daggers effect as pulling the victims soul into the blade, so i would think to use your judgement on what is considered to have a 'soul'. most undead are just corpses animated by magic. constructs are a bit tougher.

a more intense question would be what if entreri sundered a sentient weapon?

Unless he's cutting a bowstring or widdling away a club or quarterstaff, I'd say he'd have a PRETTY HARD time sundering a weapon with a dagger.

On that topic, though, would an intelligent weapon even have a soul?
