| Suin Bahhar07-26-07, 10:15 AM | In my old days of playing 2e edition AD&D to pinnacle of armor for most characters was the beloved elven chain mail. Even arcane casters could safely cast in this beauty, and it usually was loaded with protective enchantments. It costed a small kingdom do make one though. Now elven chain is merely better than studded leather. Anyone have some nice 3.5 conversion of powerful elven chains? |
| Wenin07-26-07, 10:34 AM | I don't recall elven chain having any awesome stats in 2nd edition. It was the much sought after armor for spell casters, but that is the same in 3.5. What properties do you remember from 2nd edition, that don't exist in 3.5? |
| Suin Bahhar07-26-07, 11:59 AM | It was better for thieving skills than leather. It usually started at a elven chain +3. It could be worn under normal clothing. The complete book of elves gives more ideas (but i dont have a copy on hand). |
| Smilin_Bandit07-26-07, 06:29 PM | More or less the Elven Chain was replaced by the Mithril chain shirt. Light weight, good for rogues and spellcasters alike, and can be worn under the clothes. In all actuality, It's my opinion that the elven chain can do the same thing as the mithril shirt, considering they are made of the same material, but the elven chain suit is an entire suit of chainmail rather than just the shirt and therefore more encumbering. It's still a powerful non magical form of protection and it looks good too. ~Smilin_Bandit~ :D |
| Passivearmada07-29-07, 09:04 AM | correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't the elven chain and mithril stats in the DMG3.5? |
| Blade_Shadow07-29-07, 10:15 AM | correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't the elven chain and mithril stats in the DMG3.5? your right they are, but elven chain got killed its nothing special just mithral chainmail. |
| Soltares07-30-07, 10:50 AM | Mithral Chain shirts do what Elven Chain used to do. If you want the 'Elven Chain' to 'start at +3,' just have the suit of Mithral Chain magicked up to +3. Seems simple enough. Add the Twilight armor enhancement (PHB2, among other sources) if you really want to guarantee no spell failure (or are using a full suit of mithral Chain). Sea Elven Scale, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have made the cut. (One of our GMs would roll for availability and Elven Chain was *never* available, but always rolled better for Sea Elven Scale, so we had quite a few characters outfitted in Sea Elven Scale...) |
| Passivearmada07-30-07, 11:19 AM | A solution I often use is make up your own new armor, weapon, cloak, robe, etc. It works, and the players are usually happy. |
| 1 ton ghost08-03-07, 02:03 PM | i know everyone is milking elven chain (mithral and nothing more) on how great it is. not many have stopped to consider a mithral breastplate; slightly more expensive (the armor component), however the armor check penalty is lower. sea elf scale was quite novel too. i guess i'd chalk that up to mithral as well in 3.5 and drow, which was admittedly interesting, is relatively useless now given all the surface action and the fallout from sunlight exposure and lack of undrdrk radiations, etc. think they call it "Drowcraft" now in the Underdark book |
| lucretius08-05-07, 09:16 AM | For my latest campaign I created Improved Elven Chain. Statistics wise it is a +1 easy travel mobility twilight elven chain. +6 AC, -2 armor check penalty, max Dex +4, arcane spell failure 10%, carry Medium load without reduced speed, walk 10h/day, Mobility feat, 20lb. By using mithral shirt, mithral chain mail or elven chain as a start, just start adding functionality. Here are some I considered: * Agility (+1 to +5 resistance bonus on Reflex saves) * Axeblock (DR 5/bludgeoning or piercing) * Balance (+1 to + 15 competence bonus on Balance checks) * Blueshine (immune to acid damage and rust, +2 competence bonus on Hide checks) * Called (call your armor to you) * Easy Travel (carry medium load as light load, walk 10h/day) * Glamered (armor seems like normal clothing) * Invulnerability (DR 5/magic) * Mobility * Nimbleness (increase max Dex, reduce armor check penalty) * Quickness (5ft enhancement bonus to land speed) * Silent Moves (+5 to +15 competence bonus on Move Silently checks) * Spearblock (DR 5 bludgeoning or slashing) * Spell Resistance (SR 13-19) * Twilight (-10% arcane spell failure) luc |
| Suin Bahhar08-05-07, 08:07 PM | Thanks, I think these make a good selection for upgrading. Was thinking on making elvencrafted armor and weapons a template like drowcrafted items. But this will do fine. Just dont call it the mouth full of enchantments it has. |
| Blade_Shadow08-06-07, 12:11 PM | has anyone ever made an elvencraft template? |

| Suin Bahhar08-06-07, 01:49 PM | Great! hope this helped. I was trying to get the feeling of the major weapons elven mastersmiths made in 2ed edition. Maybe the template for the elvencrafted weapons should cost more like +15000 gp. Elvencrafted armor and weapons can be made by making an added component like a masterwork item (dc 25) by elven smiths with 13 or more skill ranks (i.e. 10th level experts or the like). |
