I liked the 2nd edition box set, where they put the characters in the middle of a House war.

My drow character (Leukrythus) took a severe level-down to join an all drow group of eight that were all meeting together for the first time.

From memory I believe it was Millithor (Baenre puppet, rank #24) defending against Nurbonnis (rank #21).

19. For some unknown reason the gauth in the Gauth Grottoes surrounding Sshamath are becoming more and more aggresive. They're leaving their normal haunts and venturing too close to the city as well as attacking numerous merchant caravans and other travelers (one of these travelers could be an important noble from Menzo which draws the PCs to Sshamath to find out what happened to her) coming to and from the City of Dark Weavings. The Conclave of Sshamath request that the PCs lend their strength to Nym Mlezziir, Battlemaster of the Eastern Marches and commander of the city's patrols in the Gauth Grottoes, and help him get to the bottom of the gauths unexplained aggression.

20. While the PCs are fighting the scores and scores of death frenzied gauth, other gauth, normal beholders, beholder deathkisses, beholder mages and beholder directors mounted on megapedes launch a furious attack against Sshamath that doesn't seem like it'll relent until the gates of the city have fallen and every citizen lies dead in the streets.
The Conclave of Sshamath sends magical messages to the PCs and Nym, imploring them to hasten their efforts and get to the bottom of the "beholder madness" so their city can be saved.

21. After fighting through countless gauth, and to their surprise, some normal beholders and other beholder-kin, they discover that dozens of beholder overseers are controlling the gauth and other beholders, commanding them to attack Sshamath. However, after killing an overseer or two, the PCs find out that a half-illithid beholder hive mother is controlling beholder overseers who are in turn controlling the other beholders and the numerous gauth of the Grottoes. An epic battle ensues with the fate of Sshamath at stake, but finally, the PCs prevail. Though all is not what it seems. As the PCs strike down the half-illithid hive mother, they look up just in time to see a trio of illithids wink out of the cavern and disappear. To be continued...

23. The house of a hated rival is holding a celebratory feast commerating some alliance with another house, after decades of fighting. Your task is to poison some of the exotic foodstuffs that they are shipping in for the occasion, but with a special multi-stage substance that is *not* poisonous until it is mixed with other components, which must *also* be smuggled into the festive libations. Some may be in the meat, some in the spices, some in the incense, some perhaps smeared on the napkins! Whatever sound most fun to sneak into and poison. Actual poison will be snuck into the wine, which will obviously be detected. The rival House would never believe that their enemies wouldn't try to poison something, so they have to have a red herring to find and defeat and feel all proud of themselves... The poison won't even be that deadly (and it's not like the feast won't be crawling with mid-level priests anyway), and will have a long onset time (like eight hours to combine in the bloodstream and cause suffocation by binding up all the hemoglobin or something) the object is to shake the fragile alliance by making it look like the guest house is trying to do away with their former rivals.

Security will be tight, and it will be a challenge to get to the foodstuffs at all, even the ones being shipped into town. It might be easier to put a slow-acting agent into the Rothe before they are even butchered, for instance, or spread it into the fungus being used as appetizers before they are picked and go under super-heavy guard.

24. An unknown faction has been using Green Slime as an assassination tool. Animated skeletons concealed under robes have been tossing flasks of the slime towards low-ranking priestesses of Lolth when they are seen in public, and now the guard is on high-alert, accosting all robed figures and dismantling unaccompanied undead on sight (and accosting necromancers travelling with undead retinues). The obvious conclusion to leap to would be that a disgruntled Cleric of Ghaunadar is behind it. The more likely conclusion to the paranoid Drow way of thinking is that someone is making it *look* like a Cleric of Ghaunadar is behind it...

25. Sorcere has always been a little *too* independent in the eyes of some of the more control-freakish Clerics of Lolth, and they have begun passing highly restrictive laws regarding the use of arcane magic, after a series of 'incidents' that they have, most likely, arranged for just this purpose. By inciting minor male wizards that they deem 'expendable' to publically engage in disruptive or destructive acts (by say, having mercenaries ambush them, forcing them to unleash destructive magics to defend themselves), the anti-arcanist priestess faction can both get rid of some lower level 'loose cannons' and also make the entire society less arcane-friendly, forcing ever more dependence on the clergy of Lolth for *all* magical support.
