| Tempus66501-14-05, 07:31 AM | Well, since this January has a theme (New Beginnings/1st level), I thought let's start a thread with regards to that. 1st level characters often do a lot of crazy stuff, especially when you're a first time player, like to stir things up or play a CN alignment ;) Many players have very fond memories of these exploits and love telling them over and over again when they meet other players or when they are asked to give an example of what this D&D game is all about. Do you remember any crazy or daring things your 1st level character did. Things that were way out of his/her league? Let's gather some interesting fireside tales here! |
| Petrankov01-14-05, 08:12 AM | I cannot remember any specific examples of my own exploits at first level but I do remember one by a player in my group. The adventure was in the Scarred Lands and it was one of the old mistaken identity plot lines and we were arrested by the city guards for a murder. At the prison, now I don't know why but the DM did not disarm us right away, this players' druid lost his mind and was so angry about the arrest that he began attacking the guards. It was a small town mind you. We figured the guards would subdue him easily, so the rest of the group stood aside knowing it was mistaken identity case and that we would get a chance to prove we were innocent as the adventure progressed. This first level Druid proceeded to kill (4) 2nd level fighters and (1) 5th level captain. BY HIMSELF! He then proceeded to pee on the dead captains body, he actually announced it as his first post fight action. It was the most amazing rolling I have ever seen. There were more criticals confirmed by one character in one fight than I have ever seen since and I DM a game with 17th level characters. Also a record for most critical misses by a DM. We of course subdued him afterward for these crimes. The funny part was that the Druid's alignment was Lawful Good. Suffice to say the characters alignment changed after that and he was retired as a villain NPC. |
| Mookie3701-14-05, 01:01 PM | While I did not do this one, I was heavily involved. My seccond character ever was a paladin with a DEX of 7 (back in seccond ed where it didn't effect too much). Well, we were trying to sneak into an orc encampment, like every other first level paladin out there. My guy fails his dex check miserably and begins falling head over heels down the hill. Our clinicaly insane CG wizard desides he's gonna log roll me down the hill. Passes all of his dex checks and start running on my poor Paly's tumbeling body all the way down. Luckily we ran into the general we were supposed to kill, quite literally. |
| mastroyo01-14-05, 05:27 PM | As a DM: My players went and knocked at Elminster door and demanded, yes, demanded to talk to him. The plot hook wasn't even set yet. They just felt like meeting him. Of course, they weren't able to, but got some nice polymorph spells and enchant person on them... Becouse they didn't regard the danger signs outside Elminster's house, I had one of my players turned into a pink pony, and my half-orc barbarian enchanted so he rode the pony into the tavern in Shadowdale with a blue ribbon tied on his head. When people where laughing, the pony turned back into the dwarf. Nice way to start adventuring. As a player: One friend tried to set a trap for some orcs coming down the way. He said he'd "lay the trap in front of me", but it was an wire trap, so when he set it, he jumped over it and went hiding. But, he was our scout, so we didn't knew of the trap nor the orcs... It was a T section of a dungeon. So, when we got to the intersecion, heard the rouge saying 'this way', the saw the orcs the other way.... A trap that lit my hair on fire trying to get up (i got a 1 on reflex, so I fell and got the trap) while several orcs came at us... That tells you something about effective comunication... |
| xann01-15-05, 10:19 AM | i jus started a new campaign, (i use a critical fumble table so if you roll a 1 you then roll % against my chart to see what the fumble is..) So my one friend spots orcs moving through a forest, " sweet the first thing i get to kill with my syth" and he charges the orcs and attacks (rolls a one, so he rolls % and rolls like 97%, which means he rolls 2x again, then rolls 99%, which means he rolls 2x more) so it looked like this....he attacks the the orc but slips and fallls his syth goes flying in the air and impails him "nailing him to the dirt", with 1 Hp left. Luckly one of my other players is a dwarf not afraid to jump in the way to help a comrad, but i mean what luck on the first att. roll |
| Bliol01-15-05, 11:00 AM | Well, as one of my first mishaps, and by far the most stupid amongst them is when I, a newly started player with little knowledge of the exact rules, overvalued my dwarfen fighter's training against giants, running, axe forward, into their encampment we were sent there to scout out. |
| Tempus66501-16-05, 03:18 AM | I played a halfling barbarian once, it was one of the most fun characters to play. A halfling with a temper and the belief that he would win every fight he got into. Well, one day he was walking through Sigil and since it's such a big city and halflings (even barbarians) don't walk that fast he decided to wait around for one of those 'big, red guys' (also known as pit fiends) that occasionally walked the streets. When he saw one, he demanded the pit fiend to take him on his shoulder and take him all around town. That was a bad mistake. :gah: He got kicked into an ally and ended up somewhere in the poor district. I think I should be glad he even survived. |
| Mezzledeff01-16-05, 03:36 AM | While my party wasn't exactley new, you'd think they were... they rode into a smallish walled town and were almost immediatley greeted by a well dressed fellow who offered to take their horses for them, they all wearily agreed, so he did :) |
| maynardjkeenan01-17-05, 07:33 AM | I believe I still played 2nd Ed when this happened. It was one of the first campaigns we played and I was the DM. The group was a cleric, a half-orc fighter, a thief and a mage if I remember correctly. The group had arrived in Highmoon and was given a small tower for reasons I cannot recall. Our early campaigns rarely had anything to do with adventuring, it was usually just roleplaying with NPCs in town, but it was very amusing. Anyway, what the group did in Highmoon was simple. They went the short mile to town, got drunk and returned home to their tower. The wizard didn't participate in this by the way, since he was locked in the basement.... The thief got the idea in his head that he wanted some good old female companionship. It didn't strike me as a smart thing to hit on the carpenter's overweight wife (she had a rather large front, so to say), while the carpenter was sitting right next to her. The carpenter beat the thief up without any problems. Then, the thief got so angry, he broke all the windows in the poor carpenter's shop. I think we spent an entire evening on that session. Then there was the house in Arabel... Two of the players had rented a run down house in Arabel, a Half-orc barbarian and a human monk. The half-orc decided he wanted to decorate the house a little, so went outside of town to get a tree... A tree..... A small birch infact.... When he got back to the house, he realized he forgot to bring dirt. He then decided to make his own dirt. Yes, he took a dump on the floor and rammed the tree in the small pile of poo..... |
| tylerthehobo01-20-05, 03:31 PM | Not in FR, but I DMed a game where my low-level players were faced by this boss-level baddie who was a doppelganger posing as a vampire. Instead of turning and fleeing, they attacked. Criticals and high-rolls all around and they took him out in one round. Daaang! Problem was, this was part of a printed campaign of modules, wherein this baddie played prominently throughout the whole dang arc. A good set of practice of winging it for me, when I had no villain for them to be fighting for the rest of the adventures... On the other side of the coin, I DMed a FR game for experienced players with low-level characters this past month. This one guy rolled a Critical Miss/Fumble/Save-Fail about 8 out of 10 times... Needless to say, he wasn't a happy boy. When I let the second roll slide, the other players said they wanted to have a hat for me labeled "Softest DM ever". Well, by roll 8 when I was sticking to the rules, they thought I was the harshest, heartless gamesmaster ever. You have to be pretty creative to come up with 8 different fumble descriptions in about 20 minutes... I'm not, so he just "Fell" a lot. |
| Mendicant01-21-05, 07:17 PM | My most memorable character (and namesake  ) entered a ??? dragons lair, covered imself head to toe with honey and proceeded to get swallowed whole by said dragon. Funniest part was this was in 2e way before any info on dragon anatomy. Said character chose to use this opportunity to study the anatomy of said dragon. I still remember the DM trying to "wing it" - he learned quick to expect the unexpected from me! |
| wonderboy0601-22-05, 09:33 PM | I dont think that my char was 1st lvl when this happend, 3rd maybe. We were playing an adventure and out objective was to find the hoard of treasure that had been left their by the islands former inhabitants. After our bard cast dancing lights over the water and caused the crazy hermit that was supposed to lead us to said treasure to drown  (hermit tried to chase the lights). We began exploring the caves my  MASSIVE half orc barb in the front (I think he was 7'3" and 500+ pounds...he had a strength of 24 from a pair of gauntlets of oger power he found). Well we can apon a room and he bashed open the door to find :invation: 100 fully armed goblins, because he was so big he filled the doorway and couldnt let anyone else into the room. Having supprised them he got the change to :fight!: attack and attack he did, because of his BaB I only had to roll to see if he missed or got a crit. That along with the cleave feat, and the fact that he had a full-blade (18 in longer than a great sword) helped alot. After hacking and cleaving for somthing like 10 min. I was down to the last one, who decided to run, the barb took out his short sword (which he used as a dagger) and threw it, impailing the gobling the the opposite wall with a crit...fun times, fun times. |
| Dippiey01-23-05, 03:04 PM | My very first adventure was your original daring hero rescues kidnapped children except I was not the daring hero. In fact I was the scoundrel.Every one hated me. It didn't take long for me to get irritated by people who fussed at me for playing my character correctly. So I talked to the DM and she thought it would be great if I betrayed the group.Well, the group was about to defeat the villain(a 7th level fighter,3rd level sorcerer) so i did exactly what My character would do. The Pc's entered to find two Fake children courpses. They walked up to them and I attacked from my hiding spot and killed the weakest PC. Needles to say, I soon died |
| vorcan01-24-05, 08:49 PM | Years ago, I belonged to a group that met at a game store called "The Dragons Hoard". One night a fellow gamer brought his girl-friend in to play with us. She had never played AD&D before and thought it would be fun. Now, being a newbe to the game, she rolled up a druid and took her starting money to town. She bought 12 chickens, 5 pigeons, 8 pigs, 2 goats and a wagon pulled by 4 oxen. About an hour out side of town, I turned to the DM and asked him "what do I need to hit a chicken?" the next thing I know every last player except the girlfriend spent the next 7 rounds slaughtering all of her animals. At the end of the encounter, she stood up and in the middle of our laughing anounced " This is a horrific game, I will stand her and continue to play such an evil game". and with that she got up and dragged our fellow player away. He did return the next week with a smile on his face and we all had a good laugh about the girl friend. |
| iskanderis01-26-05, 09:51 AM | Once when starting a new rogue character but after my companions and I had been charged with our bold quest (what other kind in there?) I decided to do a little 'night work' *ahem*. I was drawn, like a magpie, to the one of the grandest buldings in Neverwinter. Once I had got in (natural 20 on the climb check), lucky move sliently and hide. I found my self in a room filled with amazing magical trinkets. Sadly I also found myself in a room with a rather powerful summoning trap. The dire lion that attacked me finished me off sharpish, and when I was brought around I got a serious ticking off from the many members of the many starred cloak I had annoyed. All this before I left the city. |
| Mordakay of Thay01-26-05, 05:45 PM | On of my first adventurer:Well,I was dm-ing,the party whas made of a first level sorcerer,half-orc barb,a drow ranger(prob Driz.. fan) and a Human fighter(I hated that damn party,no rogue,no cler...).The party entered a small vilage and they headed str8 for the inn.Nearing the in a gipsy kid apeared, pick pocketed the sorcerer and ran off. What do u guys think he did?He fired a magic missile in the poor gipsy kids back and incinerated him leaving a smoldering corpse.(the guy hated gipsyes in real life to ).Now thats just sick. |
| Thasianas Galanodel01-26-05, 07:16 PM | My first 1st level char was a wizards with 2 of charisma score ( You know good ol' 2nd ed when charisma means nothing ...) anyway... I was this ugly and shy wizards how decide to be a man .... ahem..... :turkey: It was simple... I was on a sweet little road with fellows that I accepted to join after a long "Yer a wizourd hum? ( A dwarfs he was" And I said yes.... He shot back " We need a fireworker want to coum with ous little o" men ?" a "yes came right after" anyway on the road we saw a huge, what I say! a total full army of ... KOLBOLDS!!! 4 of them !! We were surprised ! :gah: Of course we all pick up one and as usual I used my magic missile ! I was up for a terrific 2 dmg! (-_-)' But unfortunately the kobold went mad and he jump over me!!! After a tought fight (trust me it was terrific!!! ) the dwarfs pick him by the neck send him flying around on a tree. He broke his neck fast! WOaH!! But in the fight I lost my cloath (due to the uncesssing mighty nail attack of the kobold!!)! :tantrum: GOD! why??! after all that excitement my partner simply explain to me that the best way to get rid of the kobs, it was to take 3 steps back, run toward them and ... JUMP OVER THEM!!!!! In a one simple shot you'll have a lovely dead kobold under you ! :ayyyy!::cheer::w00t: |
| bobsan01-27-05, 01:13 PM | One of my most memorable low level experiences had to involve my current gaming group (which I DM) and their players... The Company of the Combustable Commode. (Yes, that's their name. Despite the fact that they don't like it and it started as a joke, it stuck - Long story there though) Anywho. I had converted an old basic D&D adventure to 3rd ed and used it as the springboard for the campaign. The beginning part had the players looking for a preist kidnapped by a bunch of orcs. Simple enough. Well, as they were traversing the dungeon the orcs called home, they came across a door, behind which they heard a bunch of orcs hooting and hollering. Not wanting to take a chance, they lef tthe room be and saught out the cleric elsewhere. However, as a precautionary measure, the halfling theif (stated (to the party mind you) that he was leaving a mess of caltrops behind in case the orcs come out, hoping their screams would provide the group with an advanced warning. Well, later on, the group encountered more orcs and, post fight, the dwarven cleric/warrior (Gahn) came across some dwarven remains (retained as trophies by the orcs) that threw him into a frenzy. Remembering the other door, he went charging head on towards it. I asked him twice what he was doing and he said he running up to the door. Fortunately, Gahn was able to remain quiet enough so as not to alert those orcs as the Ranger (Hidoreal) began plucking caltrops out of his feet. ^_^ |
