Howdy folks,
Would anyone have any suggestions for a 1st level adventure in the realms? I've gotta run something on friday night for a bunch of D&D virgins and I want something that'll give em a good experience.
Thanks in advance.

hmm why not adapting one of the first level adventures on the webpage. the burning plague is a small village in the middle of no where so is proably fairly adaptable

Dungeon Magazine (issue #130) has a 1st level adventure that takes place in Featherdale called Within the Circle by Sam Brown. I highly recommend this adventure for Realms Newbies.

Here is what I was thinking.
I start it in Waterdeep, probably at the Yawning Portal. ((I know typical meet in a tavern, but it works)) anyways, a old nobleman comes in distressed because his sister is putting the gears on him to find his nephew ((who braved Undermountain with some friends and hasn't been seen in a couple days)). Anyways, the nobleman is willing to pony up some cash if the PC's can rescue (or recover the body) of the nephew. This'll give some realms flavour along with a good ole dungeon crawl. What do you think?

I think Undermountain for a first level party is suicide.

I can populate a bit of undermountain with goblins and the like, as well as block areas with cave ins and whatnot.

It sounds like these guys aren't just new to the Realms but to D&D as a whole. I agree with your approach on combining an ol' fashioned Dungeon Crawl with a FR flair. Allows them to see an existing setting brought to life. However, I see Waterdeep as a troublesome location to set a first-time experience.

I like your idea for starting them in a tavern (stereotypical, but effective for first-timers), but I recommend a very small village instead. Something very small, but simple to create and control. A few stores, an inn, a tavern, a town square, out-lying farms, marketplace, etc. A church or two, perhaps a FR specific organization or two, and maybe a run-in with a famous character. That way you have a simple, Forgotten Realms specific setting that is simple to grasp without burdening them on details.

You can still use your current story concept, but maybe scale it back for a smaller setting. Maybe a local mine is the problem, instead of Undermountain. Kobolds and Goblins are easy to explain here. Plus, you could throw in at least one good, old wilderness encounter while they camp at night.

Of course, don't let my reccomendations steer you on a path you don't want to go. Its your game, plan it as you will. I still remember when I was new, nearly a decade ago, and I DM a lot. I know that, sometimes, its good to be slow and cautious when starting a game.
