| yggdrasil06-28-04, 04:20 AM | hi all, I need some help, lets see where this goes. A player of mine has found a lost library of corellon larethian within myth drannor. The library consists of 400 books, each with a different topic that concerns itself directly with corellon and indirectly with the seldarine. Each of the books will take approximately a month to read, and some will have bonuses to the players stats. The most powerdul of the books would give the player a bonus to an ability score, whilst the less powered books might add to a knowledge religion score. As each book takes a month to read, the player cannot abuse this ... he won't know which books do what.. and most will only offer a small increase. I would like to impress upon the player the actual SIZE of the library, and I reckon the best way to go about this is to have individual names for each of the books. So, what do I need: suggestions for Book titles in ELven (if possible) with english translation and perhaps an idea for a bonus to the player. Please number your suggestion. Thanks. |

Let me dig through my RPG partition on my hard drive and see what I can find. Yes if you can read Word .Doc's I have about another twenty pages of books that have appeared on various message boards. :) Also don't forget SKR's new series on magical books that is on the WOTC site. And heres some links for book generators. http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=623 http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=bookspinner http://www.buckbd.com/games/necrobiblicon.html |

I would like to impress upon the player the actual SIZE of the library, and I reckon the best way to go about this is to have individual names for each of the books. better yet make the player actually read 400 books and write a 1 page synopsis of them for you - each time he completes a book he gets a reward ( besides the pleasure of the book) use kujie's lists for titles and pick randomly and I would bett that your player never does finish off the whole set. :D |
| yggdrasil06-29-04, 03:47 AM | wow! thanks kuje... those are great links. :D dragonheart: awesome idea about the player writing a synopsis - just might use it. the length of time is adventure time... (while the party is offf sying dragons and what not)... so only 2-4 hrs a day spent reading. he's an elf, so will use the ime the others are sleeping to catch up on his reading. If they aren't adventuring, the time to read will be halved, if not quartered. I like the idea of him never finishing the set... not to be mean... but to suggest that all he wants to know is just too muchg to actually know. fantastic... I am all sorted. :) |

Nothing which needs to be impressed upon the player. Truly big libraries hold thousands of books and the truly great libraries (like the Lost Library of Cormanthyr hold tens of thousands of books and are so large you could get lost within and starve to death before ever finding your way back out without a map) PS: Could it be that this Lost Library of Cormanthyr is the one you are refering to? Since it was the great secret library of Myth Drannor. In this case a mere 400 books aren't even filling a single row in a single shelf of this library. |
| yggdrasil06-29-04, 07:55 AM | yes... by library standards this is a small library. By encumbrance standards (the player needs to take the 400 volumes with him), with each book a pound or two... relatively bulky. Now.. to those who live there campaigns by canon, the following explanation might hurt - so, if you hate people messing with FR... don't continue reading. As to which library this is (in game): The teeny weeny "library" was found by the Sun Elf Illuminor Anoron (a player); faithful devout worshipper of Corellon Larethian, in an old ruined (and overgrown) temple to Corellon in Myth Drannor. It was the culmination of a 2 year search for the Elf, to find evidence of Corellon as a Morning Lord (an ancient sect); whose practitioners prayed to the dawning sun (as opposed to the silvery moon). His beliefs were treated with scorn and derision by other elves throughout his life, but now he has found the temple's small (but encompassing) library which details the sect, other oddments of the time (at the height of myth drannor) and possibly how corellon became associated with the moon in latter years. OOG: At character generation, the player wanted to worship Corellon but wanted to pray for his spells in the morning instead of at night. To facilitate this, we made an ancient unheard of sect of corellon. One of the character's quests was to find/prove the validity of the sect and to spread the word to other elves. This would never be easy. We also decided that the rebirth of this sect of corellon won't remove his "moon" image, but add the "sun" image to his portfolio. And finally, that the rebirth of this sect will precipitate the elves of evermeet returning to faerun, as the dawn's sun precipitates the start of a new day. so, the small library of 400 books concerns itself primarily with the worship of corellon larethian in his sun/dawn aspect. So, now you know it all... well almost. :) |

| dragonheart06-30-04, 10:21 AM | Well, with a mere 400 book the library is actually rather small. Nothing which needs to be impressed upon the player. depends - using the same reasoning your local library is tiny - when compared to the library of congress but things like that are few and far between. A more reasonable comparison might be many of the mideval personal libraies in Europe that were the fondations of college libraries there in the 1400s or earlier. these were considered large when they numbered a couple of dozen books. If you think of mages and sages as these people ( the book collectors) wiht the great ones normally having under 100 books then the library he found is actually very large and amazing. I don't know about you but even being a voracious reader I doubt if I read 400 new books in a typical year so his character (and maybe player) has quite a bit of work to do:D |
