4e FR will still be complicated to DM in. [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've seen many people make the argument that new DMs will start to run Realms games because it will be less complicated. Many people say that they don't want to DM Realms games because they don't want to read 20 novels and 10 source books. The problem I see here is that the novels are still canon and no matter what WotC says now they will have multiple RSE before 5e comes out.

The Realms time line advances at a steady pace and each new source book is set at a slightly different time than the other books. So each new source book has minor updates for each organization. This leads to information being scattered in many books. So if a DM wants to use an organization then the DM has to read many source books. All the RSE in novels further complicates the regions and forces DMs to read many novels.

Eberron doesn't have this problem because the setting is static and the novels are not canon. WotC doesn't seem to have any intention of making the Realms static so I don't think they will ever be able to really solve this problem. Even if 4e goes great for the Realms the designers will eventually have to do another big reset because of the fracture nature of the lore. As long as the time line advances the lore for each group will be scattered like bird shot in 20 novels and 10 source books.

The other problem I see for the Realms is commonsense. Fallow my logic for a second. WotC is trying to get people that don't want to read 20 novels and 10 sources books to play in the Realms. Many of the changes have alienated many people who do like to read all those novels and source books. Who will buy their next 20 novels when their target audience is people that don't want to read 20 novels?

To the pro-4e people. Feel free to rip my argument apart, but to tell me I'm whining or that nothing is changing.

To the anti-4e people. Please be polite to the pro-4e crowd and don't say lots of nasty stuff about the designers.

Or you pick what you like and ignore the rest. Easy.

There's no rule that you have to follow everything, be aware of everything, or even follow things that you don't like. It's your world and you do whatever you feel like with it. If you want to slavishly follow the published realms then go ahead and do so, but realize that you don't have to.

I am fortunate to have some players who still read forgotten realms novels. Occasionally I'll get a question about how the events of a given book affected my realms. The first question out of my mouth is "What happened?" and I usually decided one of several things. "It happened." "It didn't happen." or "It happened but it turned out slightly different."

You don't need to know everything published about a given place or organization. You just need to know enough that you understand it and can run it. In the process you will make it your own.

All those extra sourcebooks, supplimentals, and so forth is there if you want it, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to. Keep it large and rambling I say, and let DMs trim off what they will.

-WotC has been saying that they want to use internet capabilities a lot more now, so, if we're lucky (Here's an awesome idea), asides for that "Faerūnian Newspaper" I've always been calling for, WotC might have a timeline, a la AGHotR that is update with relevant information as new sourcebooks and novels are released.

-It were up to me, I'd be a quarterly thing, a...thirty, thirtyfive page PDF in the form of a newspaper. Perhaps the "Daily Trumpet", a newspaper in Waterdeep edited by the gruff workingman Triple J- Jerth Jaeld Jolphrapilm (Thank you Everchanging Book of Names!). It would have plothooks, plotseeds, stories, updates, interviews, and what not, but in the form of stories in the paper.

It's a good idea, but then it makes books like GHoTR obsolete - WoTC won't be able to sell stuff which is aviable for free on the net. Or will they??

-It wouldn't make AGHotR obsolete. It wouldn't even prevent WotC from producing more "Timeline" books. After sufficient amount of time, what's to stop from publishing these eNewspapers as a physical product? A lot of people prefer physical things in front of them to digital copies.

Soon to come as part of the DI...

It will not alleviate the need for the GHotR, but new timeline entries will function almost like an un-ending Web-enhancement for that Tome.

Of course, as part of the DI, you'll be PAYING for it...

Just incorporate it in the DDI package and wizards is all set with money. It won't be free for those who have DDI (as they are paying for it) and Wizards could still print a physical book for those who want one or dont have DDI

I'm not positive about the 'pay' thing, but it stands to reason that everything past "Hello, this is the WotC website" will cost us money from now on.

I don't really think the NEW content is working out for them (they bit off WAY more then they can chew), so now they will just charge for what we've been getting all along, and calling it the DI.

I don't know that for sure either, but I'd be wiling to bet money on it - the servers were acting 'wonky' again the other day. I really don't feel they have the technical skill to produce an inter-active website along the lines they imagined at Gencon.

But I could very well be wrong.....

-I was reading a few other threads, and it's amazing, I think, how everything is suddenly coming with a price. Character generation, for instance. If you want to make up your character for their online D&D thingy, or if you just want the official WotC character generator to make up your character, it's going to cost you. It's only $1 - $3, but still, it's the principle.

-Ever since "Gleemax" was unveiled over the summer, the messageboards have been acting up. Sure, we have a search function now, but things often lag to the extreme, and the boards "close" at 5 AM - 6 AM (EST). I don't think they did that before.

Hardly the major Mexican food groups unless you only eat at Chevy's or something... :P

-You mean, there are other places to eat Mexican food from?

-In my world, there are only two: Chevy's, and Yummy Taco, a Mexican sotre near my cousin's house that is owned by a bunch of Chinese people. While the food isn't amazing or anything, I find the irony enough to make me a returning customer when I'm in his neighborhood.

Tons... oh, wait, East Coast... right... you only have Puerto Ricans and Cubans over there really, who are way different food wise from Mexicans. Gotta hit the West Coast and Southwest for the really good stuff. ;)

Technically, I'm Puerto Rican. I just hide it under all the German.

Technically we are all atoms. For quantum physics (GD correct me if I'm wrong) everything is a single unity.

I really hope they do this.

I've never considered it difficult to campaign in or DM a group in. That's probably I see no reason to check out every single piece of canon. I don't even exactly use them as guidelines, but more of a basis in which we can campaign. I've ripped apart so many pieces of canon as a player and DM, that, quite frankly, I don't care anymore. I use them as ideas, or suggestions. The only things which remain constant in my campaigns are the setting, time, and technology. But I still hate paladins and shall thus be largely ignored by the veteran members of this forum for that fact.

-You're not Pro-Orc (Are you? :mage:), so you're alright by me. Plus, believe it or not, you kinda are one of the veteran members of these parts.

-You're not Pro-Orc (Are you? :mage:)Half Orcs got screwed over in their stats. WotC apparently thinks that STR is better than the rest of the attributes (They have a negative modifier for almost each other attribute), and they should be more commonly used. They're not cool anymore. , so you're alright by me. Plus, believe it or not, you kinda are one of the veteran members of these parts. The beginnings of 4e kinda killed my participation in these forums. And in DND Races. And, actually, in the RR. But I'm still as active as ever in the D20FG forum.

So, while I would be one if I stayed, to the younger members of this forum, I am but a strange guy that argues about drow. And the Hells.

I think he's implying that you can be one or the other, but not both. I think orcs are ridiculously cliche and underpowered. I far prefer gnolls. No offense to any individual or group here.
