A boy named Drizzt? [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-12-05, 12:20 AM I had a thought, and figured I would share. Maybe it has come up in the past.

Does anyone have proof of a bona fide case of someone naming their child Drizzt? I don't throw in with the huge fan following, though I enjoyed the books immensely. I only ask because I saw a post somewhere about someone getting an FR-related tattoo and figured that naming a child after a dark elf was the obvious next step.

I would really love to bump into someone named Alustriel, or have my kid (when I have one) come home from school with bruises claiming that Zaknafein beat him up. Or to go to a school PTA meeting and meet his principal, Elminster.

Gods...sometimes I am too much of a nerd for myself, even.

Any thoughts?

10-12-05, 02:51 AM In a Dragon magazine (don't remember the number, if you are really interested I can go through my mags to find it) there was a letter from a reader asking Ed what the name Alustriel meant as he wanted to name (or had already named, I don't remember anymore) his child after her. Ed said it did not really mean anything. So it's entirely possible to bump into someone named Alustriel some day.

But I don't think I'd go so far as to actually name any daughter of mine that. :blush:

Well actually I think you will most likely find: Wulfgar, Bruenor and Halaster. What child really deserves to be called Halaster :rolleyes:

I know a guy who is a big DL fan and is gonna call his son Raistlin.

And I would like to call my daughter (if I ever have one) Ellen-Ripley or Danika after Siguorney Weavers "aliens" character and the monk from RA Salvatores Cleric Quintet.

If I had a baby boy I'd name him after a certain npc character I have in my realms game. :)

Actually Artemis is a common Greek Boys name (if I remember correclty, in modern times). Aside from the Greek Goddes of the Hunt (of course) ;)

10-19-05, 08:47 PM This is nowhere near as bad as naming your child Kal-el or Drizzt, but my friend was over the other night and we had a similar discussion. He is a French-Canadian native living in Japan, married to a Japanese woman. They recently had a child, a daughter, and he named her Manna, after the series of video games. He told his wife that it was a common name in Canada (?)...backed this up by saying that it was a biblical name, as well...which I guess it is.

He said that once I get married and hang up my dice (which I highly doubt will ever happen...the hanging of the dice, that is), that I will have to resort to trickery such as this to fulfill my nerd addiction.

I can imagine trying to get away with this myself with my current girlfriend, and how badly it would go. "Yeah, baby...Khelben is a common name in Japan..."

Why they won’t even know what his name means. I think he might even end up being one of the cool kids, or even a bully. I know you can predicate that with a name, but you guys seem to assume that they are going to be geeks or something...

And for the recorded I would not name my kid any of those names, I am just saying :D

By the way some of the worst names I've heard of come from real-world terms. There was a newspaper article out about 10 years ago listing some kid names in Florida. I don't remember all, but some did stick out. These were twin names: Syphillis & Gonnorhea; Pete & Repete; Bigamy & Larceny. Which would you rather be named after: an STD, a stupid rhyme, a crime, or someone really awesome like Drizzt?

Point taken :D, but I'd rather my mate call his kid something fairly original than it become one of the HORDES of Pauls, Britneys, Jades, Jacks and all those other neo-yuppies or chav-sakes that people are naming their spawn these days. ;)

10-21-05, 01:29 PM While 'Britney' and so on may be a fad caused by a celebrity's name, names such as 'Paul' are much older (Paul was one of the Apostles in the Bible, after all) so I don't think would be classified in that way.

My son's name is Artemis after the assassin himself. My daughers name is Kezghana, based off my online handle Kezghan which was crafted for a story i was writing in the mid ninties. I like uniquish names. If my daughter had been a boy his name would have been (this was cleared with approval) Zaknafein. But sorry no drizzt's. heh

I have several of his minis(some I've altered so he has a blue sword representing Icingdeath), own all the stories he is in, have the swords they made, have his old costume from 2nd edition, with his new look by lockwood being made for me now. Oh well it could be worse. HHmmmm now if only I can get my hands on a Panther. Wonder how much they run lol.

I'm also in the UK, and agree that Paul, David etc are common but not 'chavvy' names per se (though there are probably many with the names).
