I have no idea what it is supposed to represent. It's what the game designers created to show the place holders on the map. So ($10) on the list also shows up on ($10) on the map. The 2e box set has a better explaination for this. :)

I have no idea what it is supposed to represent. They aren't prices. The "$" means it's a location in the Sea Ward. So (40$) means that it's location #40 in the Sea Ward.
