I am starting a FR campaign soon and have run into a kind of block for adventures. I am hoping some of you guys can help me out.

The PC's are as follows:

Human Pirate from the Moonshaes (Fighter/Rogue)
Tiefling Rogue from Thay
Human Monk/Cleric of Ilmaeter
Half-Elf Ex-Slave from Calimshan

The game is starting in Waterdeep during Shieldmeet. Help is appreciated.

Without knowing levels I can't offer any specifics but...

Shieldmeet is typically a time for proving ones prowess and skill in battle. For those of nobleblood it can be taken quite seriously... even to the point that murder may be acceptable.

Have one of the PCs either anger or annoy a noble of some sort and get challenged to a duel. This noble is not really any sort of warrior, but he has the wealth to turn the tides on the PC. Poison, magic, a curse... there are plenty of options, all of which must be undone before the time of the duel/challenge or the PC is likely to fail.

Or...

Two knights of two different noble families are to duel/other appropriate challenge and one of them employs the same tactics as the noble mentioned above. This way none of the PCs themselves are weakend. They can be offered money by the noble of the weakend house, or could just be on friendly terms with the knight.

Or...

A number of other things. A PC spends the night with a women of the street only to find that he's been robbed of all posessions... now he must track her down. Doing so he discovers that she owed a lot of money to some street toughs and their leader and that she had no other choice... there is nearly an infinite number of hooks available to a setting such as Waterdeep.

Good luck in designing your adventure!

I would suggest that you pick up a copy of Dungeon magazine and see if anything gives you an idea for a campaign to kick off. The critical threats are a great source of villains to create a good chronicle around.

The characters are all level 3 except the tiefling, he is lvl 2.
Thanks so far. I just might employ some of these. Keep the ideas flowing if you can.

Thanks

perhaps do a town adventure, maybe a nice involving the thieves guild in skullport, would work well with the pirate and rogue. They could buy the ex-slave maybe and then enter the cleric. They cause some sort of big argument thing. get arrested. Have to get out :) I know, it's probably a little overdone, but the cleric might be hard to get in with the pirate and rogue.

also, ilmater's suffering god, maybe cleric's with and trying to help the ex-slave, rogue and pirate given an assignment together somehow cross paths realise they're working to the same end.

They could be smuggling the ex-slave from calimsham if they're more good aligned and encounter the cleric who's with the law enforcement. Great party it sounds like.

Well they have their character's backgrounds worked out as follows:

The Pirate was raised by a pirate captain whose ship just got sacked by the navy of one of the sword coast nations (he didnt say which) and managed to escape and make it to Waterdeep where he wants to make a crew and become a captain himself.

The monk/cleric is on his week of retreat from Ilmaeter in which he can give into life's temptations and such for a week. He chose to go to Waterdeep during Shieldmeet to have some fun.

The tiefling rogue is on assignment from his masters in Thay to retrieve someone/something(he is leaving it up to me) and they/it will be in Waterdeep at the time.

The sorc ex-slave escaped from his lord in Calimshan before they could use him unwillingly as an assassin. He recieved passage from a noble and his ship to the city of splendors.

Now the problem of getting them together still stands as I see it.

An easy hook would be the tiefling's target to be a noblewoman (or the like). She hooks up with the monk at the festival, and the two share some fun together (flirting or even romancing if you and the player feel like it). She fears a kidnapping attempt, and in order to prevent it she hires two bodyguards - an ex-pirate in need of money to buy a ship and a rogue sorcerer. When the tiefling strikes, have the four PCs start a fight (three versus one). Then you have a few options:

a) the rogue surrenders/abandons his plot and agrees to go against his masters
b) the nobleman was in truth an evil traitor Red Wizard who knocks them all down and interrogates them (with torture and the like) fearing that they have all been sent to capture her (the tiefling from Thay, the others from the Lords of Waterdeep). The PCs escape and plot revenge or justice.
c) the City Watch interrupts the fight, but recognises the noblewoman as a notorious crimelord (lady?) and put them all in jail. Escape, the PCs may choose to work for the lady.
d) etc. etc.

If you run with that... make sure the rogue survives. No accidently crits on the other PCs behalf...

Make some sort of fail safe!
