| Kalithor10-15-04, 10:38 PM | I'm sure this has come up on here a bunch, considering how often my friends and I have talked about it. One of their big discussions is which book to base it off of, and my answer has always been NONE. Make a stand-alone script and go with it. But, my post, and the question I present to you now is, who would YOU cast? Here's my current ideas, granted with some computer and camera tricks. *Drizzt- Has to be an unknown (at least in Hollywood for the most part) Too many expectations to live up to, especially if you bring in an identifiable actor. Though argument in our circle of friends lends to Orlando Bloom *Wulfgar- Heath Ledger, hands down! *Bruenor- Bruce Willis (camera tricks to decrease height) *Catti-brie- Kursten Dunst *Regis- Warwick Davis (but that might be too reminescient of Willow) *Pwent and the Gutbusters- a bunch of computer modified pro-wrestlers, with the Rock or Vin Diesel pulling the lead of the group. *Artemis- Val Kilmer Alright, hopefully everybody can enjoy theorizing about the cast along with us. With the Demonstone game, and the completion of Hunter's Blades, I think this might not be such a pipedream, so who knows, we might even contribute a little. |
| Charles Phipps10-16-04, 01:22 AM | Icewind Dale is the easiest to adapt and has something for everyone. Some computer generated orcs, the mad sorcerer, the mysteriousness of Drizzt, and the Crystal Tower The only thing I'd change is get rid of Errutu and instead have Artemis Entrei there, you'll save a fortune on special effects plus avoid unfair comparisons. Artemis Entrei I think would be better played by a slightly sleazier actor. I'm thinking not the blonde adonis nature of Val Kilmer or a Heathe Ledger but more Bullseye of Daredevil in Colin Farrael. Even Ben Affleck would do better since Ben can do MEAN. |
| BrianCritchley10-16-04, 02:35 AM | a drizzt movie is a good idea, but there's one problem, it's be a nightmare on the political corectness front. I mean the fair skinned elves are good, while the black skinned elves are evil, now while even most children understand the the blackness of drow skin is because they have black hearts so to speak. the media would have a feild day decreeing the drow as being racist. remember these are people who managed to find racism in the clone troopers  |
| warlockco10-16-04, 03:15 AM | I think Ray Park would be better as Drizzt than Orlando Bloom. He was Darth Maul in Episode 1, and Toad in X-Men, and the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow. |
| Lancelot_Shadowdancer10-16-04, 03:44 AM | C'mon guys. Drizzt is black. At least give it to Wesley Snipes. And for Wulfgar- I can't remember his name, but the Germanic guy from Gladiator. Cattie-brie- Pretty dead on there I think. And as for Artemis- I think Christian Bale would rock in that role. Anyone ever see American Psycho? |
| warlockco10-16-04, 03:49 AM | Truthfully I think this is something that would be best done as an Animated Feature. |
| maynardjkeenan10-16-04, 09:06 AM | If I ever see Kirsten Dunst in anything relating to Forgotten Realms, I will shoot myself. Maybe in the foot, but still, I will shoot myself. Same goes for The Rock or any other wrestler. And Vin Diesel.... And Heath Ledger... Possibly Bruce Willis too. Can't picture him as a dwarf... And if I see anyone suggest Jennifer Lopez in any role, in any movie or public role for that matter.... I'm bored.... |
| Kalithor10-16-04, 01:59 PM | I like the Ray Parks idea! And he's still a lesser known actor, outside of the martial arts community. As far as Wesly Snipes, I hadn't thought of that, but Jaraxle has always reminded me of Dennis Rodman. The thing isn't the blackness of the characters though, cuz drow are a completely different shade than black humans. However, the only reason I'd disregard that idea is because neither of those actors have sharp enough features to be elven in any way. One of our circle's main arguments has also been towards Crystal Shard, but I think it is to Conan-ish, though I do agree it has a good introduction to all the characters. I still think a new script would be a better idea. Besides, then the team that puts it together won't have to deal with as many of us tearing down every detail, and we can al have fun because we won't overanalyze as much. Val Kilmer was kinda a last minute pick. I was also in favor of Christian Slater (leaning more towards his Jack Nickleson influences). But I think Kilmer could pull off the calculating calm of Artemis rather than just depict his dispicable side. Seen his roll in Salton Sea??? Christian Bale is a good pick too, but within the next six months, he will BE Batman, so it'll be hard to seperate that role from here out. As far as racism, and political correctness, I don't think that would get brought up by anyone but far-left thinking groups grasping at straws. Its a fantasy realm, and its not black people/white people. Though, I do agree there probably would be arguments from a few groups, I don't think it would be great enough to disregard such a great project. I mean, what's next? PETA thinks the fact that Guen is flushed to another plane every time her work is done is cruelty?!?! *yawn* Glad to see we're getting some input on this though :D |
| Kalithor10-16-04, 02:02 PM | Truthfully I think this is something that would be best done as an Animated Feature. That's been another point brought up in our group, and though that would be the easiest way, I think it would be less compelling. Besides, what's the fun in theorizing who would to the "voice acting"?? Though you're probably right, I would hope to see it in real characterization. But IF, then who? |
| BrianCritchley10-16-04, 06:49 PM | drizzt would be best as a 100% cgi charcter |
| Aragorn10-16-04, 07:09 PM | My only fear is that the guy who owns the rights to the D&D movies is the guy who directed the D&D movie. Do we really want to see another big screen mistake? And worse, do we want to see such poor quality in a awsome character like Drizzt? Someone who has directing talent, and an eye for making a great fantacy film, would need to buy the rights. Somehow since the one who owns the rights knows by now he made a horrible movie, probibly won't give up the rights, which is a shame. Aragorn... |
| nekrolog10-16-04, 07:11 PM | *Drizzt- Has to be an unknown (at least in Hollywood for the most part) Too many expectations to live up to, especially if you bring in an identifiable actor. Bruce Willis as Breunor  |
| Charles Phipps10-16-04, 07:23 PM | My only fear is that the guy who owns the rights to the D&D movies is the guy who directed the D&D movie. Do we really want to see another big screen mistake? I'm still annoyed we may not see a sequel staring the original cast. Jimmy Olsen aside, the cast looked like gamers and their characters behaved like at least the players at MY TABLE (with less backstabbing) and I know the visuals are perfect because I can view things wonderfully... It's just the players don't act it out right and my plotlines are overblown. The only thing needed was "cut scenes" and make it more Knights of the Dinner Table and like the original Punisher (all it needed was the shirt). You know, explain away elf girl and dwarf guy's absence as they didn't show up for that session...ditto when Ridley's seperated. |
| CzarGarrett10-16-04, 07:24 PM | If they ever do this, I just ask one thing: No CGI unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. |
| BrianCritchley10-16-04, 07:45 PM | why no cgi? the fact is using cgi for "costuming" is fine, golum in LOTR is a great example, sometimes you NEED CGI to make a costum that much more effective. |
| TwilightKing10-16-04, 09:22 PM | If they ever do this, I just ask one thing: No CGI unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. And seeing as how this would be a fantasy film with magic, monsters, epic landscapes, etc. it is necessary by default. |
| Cli' San Aquanova10-16-04, 11:33 PM | First off, if there's to be a FR/D&D movie that'd be good, get Peter Jackson! I've said it countless times, he'd be our saving grace. As far as cast, it'd have to stay away from the "major players". Go with lesser-known but equally-talented thesbians. An exception I think is Vin Deisel. I think's he's pretty cool, and come on, he friggin' plays D&D! I don't know why he's disliked. Drizzt- not sure. Wesley Snipe's awesome and all, but he's not thin enough to be an Elf. Orlando Bloom would make everyone think this is a ripoff of LotR, plus I don't see Drizzt as that much of a prettyboy. Wulfgar- Heath Ledger isn't that bad an idea, actually... Cattie-Brie- please, for the love of all that is good and holy, not Kursten Dunst. Kate from A Knight's Tale (the Irish female blacksmith) would be a pretty good idea though IMO, what with her accent, and she looks like she could fight. Put red hair on her and that's kinda how I see Cattie-Brie. Bruenor- not sure. I'd say John Rhys-Davies, but once again, we don't want it to look like a LotR ripoff. No idea for Regis, but we'd need a Hobbity-looking character (someone who wasn't in LotR). Entrerri- not sure about Kilmer, but at the moment I can't think of anyone. And one that hasn't been mentioned: King Obould Many-Arrows- not sure either. I'll come back when I have better ideas... -C'SA :u:Bring Back Merfolk!!!:u: |
| nekrolog10-16-04, 11:49 PM | I have always thought that in LOTR, Aragorn should have been played by Denzel Washington. If you've seen Kenneth Branaugh's version of "Much Ado About Nothing," he plays a duke or prince (I forget which) really well. He could play the introspective Drizzt, IMO, better than anyone. |
| nekrolog10-16-04, 11:50 PM | King Obould Many-Arrows- not sure either. Ron Perlman (Hellboy)? |
| Charles Phipps10-17-04, 12:08 AM | First off, if there's to be a FR/D&D movie that'd be good, get Peter Jackson! I've said it countless times, he'd be our saving grace. If we want a "good" film then we already have Lord of the Rings as the D&D movie. Dragonlance or The Icewind Dale book could indeed be excellent movies as well, but not "D&D" If you want a D&D movie, its gotta be camp. Otherwise without the tongue and cheek its just another fantasy movie |
| BrianCritchley10-17-04, 12:17 AM | d&d is a rules set, thus no movie is gonna be a d&d movie because d&d is just a set of rules. |
| Dwarven Beserker10-17-04, 12:22 AM | Agreed that peter jackson would be one of the best suited directors for this. Personally, I was leaning towards not having drizzt as a CGI, but after thinking about gollum, and everyone from final fantasy, i think that no man could play up to his sheer dexterity, finese, grace, or whatever. It takes away a certain amount of the mystic feel when your read a drizzt book and cant get the image of a darkskinned legolas with scimitars out of your head. Also, if they screw it up... well.... then we can shoot ourselves in the foot and watch kirsten dunst as cattie brie :D |
| Dwarven Beserker10-17-04, 12:27 AM | d&d is a rules set, thus no movie is gonna be a d&d movie because d&d is just a set of rules. Forgotten Realms isnt a set of rules. The DnD GAME may be, but forgotten realms is a fantasy setting, which can be used as a setting in the DnD game, but it is not THE DnD game. Like saying that if made a LOTR game with DnD rules that you couldnt have a LOTR movie... And we werent talking about DnD, we were talking about forgotten realms... and take a glance at the hundreds of DnD books in general before you tell me that its just a set of rules.... :) |
| CzarGarrett10-17-04, 01:31 AM | And seeing as how this would be a fantasy film with magic, monsters, epic landscapes, etc. it is necessary by default. CGI for fireball: yes CGI for character: no CGI for dragon: possibly I look at older vs newer movies and think that the guy in the mask and costume look better than the CGI character. When able to use a live person, do so. Thats what I meant by no CGI unless necessary. |
| Ranger REG10-17-04, 01:44 AM | a drizzt movie is a good idea, but there's one problem, it's be a nightmare on the political corectness front. I mean the fair skinned elves are good, while the black skinned elves are evil, now while even most children understand the the blackness of drow skin is because they have black hearts so to speak. the media would have a feild day decreeing the drow as being racist. remember these are people who managed to find racism in the clone troopers  Really? I have never heard of these people, fortunately. I should count my blessing. :smirk: Trust me, it can go either way. For instance, there was a time when Ted Danson was a former boyfriend of Whoopi Goldberg (don't ask me why) and in her birthday celebration, Ted dressed up in black makeup with white lips. It was reminescence of the time when African-Americans were forbidden to perform in front the white crowd. The media harped on him for his action, even though Whoopi shrugged the media for having no sense of humor. And I will end what could potentially be a political message. |
| Charles Phipps10-17-04, 02:07 AM | Drizzt's racial makeup as an "evil" elf will never come up. While it'd need to be a dark black man to go "normal" for Drizzt, I do agree he should be played as a black man....if nothing else for the poignancy that one shouldn't be judged for the color of one's skin. ....yes even if the person hails from a race of aggressive military peoples (Drizzt could be ZULU!) Drizzt basically in Icewind Dale would exist to be philosophical, wield twin scimitars, and look cool |
| maynardjkeenan10-17-04, 07:37 AM | I have always thought that in LOTR, Aragorn should have been played by Denzel Washington. You have to be kidding.. Viggo Mortensen played the role as Aragorn perfect and Denzel is.... well... black.... Aragorn isn't black. Making Denzel look white with makeup would be impossible. |
| BrianCritchley10-17-04, 08:11 AM | Forgotten Realms isnt a set of rules. :) actually you misn oted my statement which basicly explained why D&D the movie wasn't much of anything, because you need the setting. Really? I have never heard of these people, fortunately. I should count my blessing. you should, it's relally quite sad. you see, they point out that jango and the clones are " hispanics" (even though he;'s NOT a hispanic he's a mori from new zealand, but these morons don't let facts get in the way!) but these people then dress in WHITE! thus it's symbolic of white supremcay over h ispanics... the arguement is unbeliveable in it's stupidity, yet hollywood critics HAVE made it. |
| GothicDan10-17-04, 11:51 AM | My eyebrow is still twitching at the thought of Heath Ledger as Wulfgar.... And please, Peter Jackson is not all that fantastic. The reason why LotR is so fantastic is because of Tolkien. Sure, Peter Jackson did well adapting it, but he has a history of horrible movies. Anyone ever see Meet the Feebles? *Shudder* |
| nekrolog10-17-04, 12:57 PM | You have to be kidding.. Viggo Mortensen played the role as Aragorn perfect and Denzel is.... well... black.... Aragorn isn't black. Making Denzel look white with makeup would be impossible. Not kidding at all... the Dunedain were called dark-skinned by Tolkien in Fellowship and the Silmarillion. I think it would have added more character to the role making the Dunedain darker skinned. |
| maynardjkeenan10-17-04, 01:27 PM | I believe they were described as dark haired, and maybe a little darker than i.e. the people of Rohan, but most certainly not as dark as Denzel Washington. |
| Dorlomin10-17-04, 10:51 PM | a drizzt movie is a good idea, but there's one problem, it's be a nightmare on the political corectness front. I mean the fair skinned elves are good, while the black skinned elves are evil, now while even most children understand the the blackness of drow skin is because they have black hearts so to speak. the media would have a feild day decreeing the drow as being racist. remember these are people who managed to find racism in the clone troopers  Which is exactly why a movie based on the drow will never be made. Yes the 1 million plus players of D&D/readers of the books would understand them for what they are, the other 6.5 Billion on this planet all likely won't. And after the first movie they made, I'm pretty dead set against them ever making anything other than books & games. |
| BrianCritchley10-18-04, 12:06 AM | meh a d&d movie woulda been fine if it was forgotten realms instead of "generic fantasy world with no grounding in d&d whatsoever" |
| WizO_BigSister10-18-04, 12:33 AM | I am sorry people but introducing real world politics, religion or racial issues into topics is not allowed on these forums. As this is what seems to be the bulk of this thread then I am closing it. |
