So here I am bored. And I start to think...Could you have something similiar to a lightsaber in D&D? Here's what I have on it. It's an ornate rod, about a foot or so in length, with arcane inscriptions along the length of it and some metal protrusions at one end. When the proper command word is spoken, the end with the protrusions erupts in a thin blade of magical energy about 3 and a half foot long. Realistically, the energy blade could cut through most anything...except any magical item, such as armor or weapons. This eliminates the weilders from being able to kill anything. What kind of damage would it do? 1d10? How about crit range, same as a scimitar? Call me crazy or stupid or whatever, but it bears thinking about. Respond with the appropriate stats you would use please. No rules quotes! :behold:

May not be exactly what you are looking for, but you could use the "Brilliant Energy" property in the DMG. Pretty much makes a weapon a lightsaber, though it does have some restrictions.

Vorpal, Brilliant Energy, but does not "ignore" non-living armour... it just melts it. :b:

Nah! what you want is the 4th level spell "Thunderlance," from the FRCS. The good thing about it is that it can be a 20-foot lightsaber too...

See what I was thinking is that the blade itself is made from weave energy. Since it is a magical energy, other magical fields could, in theory, repel it. I'm gonna look up a few of the things you guys mentioned!

In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind there's a mod which allows you to have a lightsaber, so a lightsaber-equivelent of the Realms isn't crazy. http://www.geocities.com/flammabledragon/mermangrin.TXT

I'd say have it use most of the lightsaber's properties (Ignoring the hardness of things, and such), 1d10 damage, I'd say 19-20 x2 for crits, and a medium-size exotic weapon (Is Tiny while deactivated), requires the Weave for blade utilization (Therefore it doesn't work in anti-magic or dead-magic zones)...

I'm interested in this. I'll look through the SW RPG rules for the lightsaber and see if I can put one of these things together and see if it looks good! http://www.geocities.com/flammabledragon/mermangrin.TXT

Should it be called a Weavesaber or a Weaveblade?

Weaveblade
Medium-size exotic weapon (Tiny while deactivated)
Damage: 2d6
Type: Force/heat
Crit: 19-20 x2
Weight: 2 lbs
Special: Weaveblades ignore the hardness and damage
reduction of objects or creatures.

You apply your Strength modifier (If any) to damage
done by a Weaveblade.
A Weaveblade always has at least a +1 enchantment
on it.

An intriguing weapon, the Weaveblade (While
deactivated) is a small, metal, thin cylinder about
12 inches long, with runes on it, and on the north
end of the hilt, a small, fine grate, with a magical
gem securely inside.

Upon command (Be it a rune being pressed or a
command word being spoken), a blade of magical
energy erupts from the gem inside the grate,
extending to a little over a yard long. The Weaveblade's
energy blade can slice through iron with ease, and
not many non-magical things can survive its strike.

Only magical weapons (Weapons with +1 or higher)
and magical armor (Armor with +1 or higher) can
survive a Weaveblade, since Weaveblades cannot
ignore the hardness and or damage reduction of
those magical items.

Most Weaveblades do force/heat-type damage, but
when a Weaveblade is being created, the creator
can choose to select an energy type from the following
list instead of the force/heat damage: force/chill,
force/corrosive, or force/shocking.

I didn't work out the history, but I think it should be first created by the Faithful of Mystra.

What do you think?

The Weaveblade is an excellent take on the lightsaber for the realms, but when you mentioned replacing force/heat with an energy I became confused. I think instead it should be: " You may replace the force/heat quality with one of the following: force/chill, force/corrosive, or force/shocking." Personally, I cannot see the force aspect of the lightsaber totally replaced by an energy (no pun intended). It is affectively a solid object, despite being purely an energy (heat, chill, etc). Perhaps color can be determined by the energy used: redish - heat, bluish - chill, greenish - corrosive, yellowish - shocking. :)

I like that suggestion. Thanks, I'll use it.
